shall i be brutally honest? i will anyway. smile

they are lacking that ring that new strings have and i like the screech as you move your fingers up the frett board. new strings have to bed in before they hold their tuning but as i have found; as you play further up the arm they tend to lose their tune, octaves on harmonics aren't where they should be so solos up top sound flat.

it's a fact of life that when you decide to change the strings after the next gig, they sound great! tones are nice etc. it's just when you look at the 5th and 6th strings they're almost black and sound quite dead...so they've got to go.

i was noodling last night on my Crafter semi acoustic, did some bending on the 12th frett (due to old strings) and when i went to play open chords the high E and D strings had lost their tuning, so a change is unavoidable even though the strings sound great when recording. when they gorra go they gorra go.

i think i tried elixirs once but when i went back to get more the store had gone bust! i'll have to see if they're on Amazon next time i need some

I certainly agree with Neo about Elixir coated strings, although I prefer their NanoWeb 80/20s on my acoustics (just a little brighter).

Hmmm, I'll have to try them next time, but this week I changed my strings for the first time since 2016 ... yikes

OMG, neo. i don't change my strings often and i have 6 unopened packs in my drawer, but i couldn't abuse my beauties by nor restringing for 2 years, the sweaty fingers alone would make them black and toneless in 6 months! see, i told you i don't change them often.

Trevor, so sorry to hear of your troubles, the least of which is changing strings too often. lol  welcome to the forums, and i wish you many years of happiness with your new love.

I did a Christmas Eve gig when I was bass in a duo. We were warned as we set up not to bother with the people on the other side of the room as they were "trash". Then we got the same story from the "trash" keep away from them over there!
All went well till the last song when the whole club errupted. Within minutes there wasn't a whole table, glass, window or door. I now try to avoid playing on Christmas Eve. Who wants to go through Christmas with a black eye and missing teeth? And some in jail? It takes all sorts I guess.

Quite an experience, Phill ... did you happen to be playing Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz"? big_smile

in actual fact it was elvis' wonder of you....funny how you remember little things? like when the fight starts you pull your mic stands in, take your guitar off, pull the speakers down and stand well back

Neo, you had a guy in the band that played a bottle?

It usually works the other way for me. I do mostly 60s and 70's covers, but I keep getting asked for songs by people I've never heard of! And as you say the aggressive little termites that want to take on the world after 2 pints and a couple of shots. Which is why I haven't taken on any shows this year and seriously considering retirement after 46 years. It's a wrench and makes me sad...but maybe it's time for me to become one of the pot bellied beer swilling critics that I've been entertaining all these years?

I've read his detailed replies and thought no more of them, no slight intended. They are always informative and entertaining. I would be glad to sign a petition for his exalted elevation.

i just had a quick listen and it's in Bb. i caught some of the chords but i'll need more time to work them all out.
must say Kenny did a great job of performing the song, and of course great writing.

Powerful words my friend. Pity we haven't heard from Kenny AKA kap54 for quite a while.
You have an excellent voice which I'd like to hear on a recording of this song.

"hoping that he'd play the solo as he'd done in his dream"....wow, done that been there worn the tee shirt out!

so true to life. whenever i've premiered a new song "live" and there's a solo first thing is remembering the words then remembering the first note of the solo that i'd worked out. often (in battlefield conditions) the panic that you've come to the solo can catch you unawares so i've played; the wrong string, the wrong note or even the wrong key or a solo from another song....! so this quite apart from the fact that it's a cracking bit of writing, is so true to life.
i read in the Beatles autobiography that when they started out (Sutcliff on bass) McCartney had a guitar solo to play and i believe the nerves got the better of him. it happens to the best of us.

Excellent first effort, it could almost be a song? Or maybe a lament! The powers that be would rather make money than save the world for our and their children's future....when will it end? Keep em coming.

I've seen some concerts on the box and was mightily impressed, but never bought any albums... maybe I should have.
I will look them up on YouTube. Sad day.

Elton John, Niel Diamond and Rush, 2018 hasn't started that good?

Almost all the above.
My 15 year old grandson got a bass for Christmas all that mattered was it was black. I wasn't consulted! So I've given a few tips.
My 16 year old grandson wants to buy a guitar from his part time earnings and he has asked my advice. He obviously can't afford a name guitar and I've told him to check out music shops to see what looks, feels and sits nicely on his body
He's thinking about getting one from Amazon due to the price so he may go that way, I suppose he can always send it back if it's just a box!
My first few guitars were all cheapies, but they did the job even though I couldn't bend the strings or hold them down past the 8th frett.

i've never been a big fan still it's sad when an artist of his standing decides to retire due to Parkinsons.

77 tomorrow, just want to wish him a happy birthday and long retirement. though he said he intends to continue writing and recording .

I wish I felt the same way as you guys about guitars. To me a guitar is like a car....gets you from A to B. Don't get me wrong, I love most of my guitars, there's a certain black one that I panic bought...urgh! So it sits upstairs gathering dust. It looks pretty, but....

My Crafter I need for recording.
My Tanglewood for pleasure.
My Telecaster for stage and also recording.
My non-descript 12er also recording.
My Wilson bass...ditto
My 72 Strat comes out now and then for enjoyment along with my Fender F90 acoustic.

I have no plans to buy more, but never say never. I fancy a gold top LP but they're far too expensive.
As they say about alcohol; let's hope enough comes before falling over

trevor, i have no idea of what you mean by "cancerian" or "sublime messages", but i'm with you all the way. i find it difficult to believe in any kind of divine being when you see all the death and suffering that's been caused in the name of "God" of any religion.

wouldn't it be nice to spend the summer in one hemisphere then migrate to the other hemisphere for the summer there? it's brass monkey weather here at the moment. as the Eagles said in Desperado...."the sky wont snow and the sun don't shine" it hardly ever snows in Llanelli.
i've experienced the OZZY summer a couple of years back; 40 degrees in the shade, great for the tan lol but i suspect slightly cooler in NZ?

personally, i never read the papers or seldom watch the news, i check the internet for what interests me, like Llanelli SCARLETS beating Toulouse last saturday, that's news you want to hear any time of year.

having said all that, what a great piece of journalism, better than the trash the papers put out.

Yes, more like a narrative or preface to a novel than a poem. That matters not a jot. It's interesting and informative and leaves you waiting and wanting the next installment.

Trevor, this is great! The only improvement I can imagine is a solid drum beat on the second half maybe 2 minutes in. A nice rip roaring guitar solo about the last third. Other than that I think you've nailed it.

For those that don't know, Aethelflaed was Alfred the greats daughter, I think?

I see you've taken Open Your Eyes down...shame, I know I'm at fault...sorry. listened to that also, and it's a fine song recorded in a Simon and Garfunkel style, with a Bob Dylan-esque vocal performance. Anyone that haven't listened to these two tracks should do so...you won't be sorry.
