getting in and out of bed are still really painful especially the early morning walk across the landing...you know? and i've found the most comfy sleeping position is sitting up. where i've never lost feeling or movement in my hands, moving the arm itself has been scream out loud time eg picking up the guitar....murder! so picking up amps and speakers is off the menu for a good while i think.

i've never understood the rules to bridge, but once on holiday there was a group of Italians playing cards on the next table, all talking at once at the top of their lungs....i wonder if any of them knew what the others were talking about? 7 broken bones? i've only ever managed to break my nose. could have been when i was boxing or i when got knocked in the nose by a cricket ball.

Here's an update.

I attended fracture clinic this morning and the specialist gave me the great news that I won't need an op! Though I must keep my arm in a sling for a few weeks, I am not allowed to drive as my insurance will be void if I do ( it's an offence to drive with no insurance in the UK) and no lifting for at least 8 weeks or rounders which started this in the first place.
So, my best wishes to all my Chordie mates that are still suffering. I'm still in pain but my mind is now eased a little.

It seems my little outburst that was meant as a serious joke has taken on a life of its own. Doug does a fabulous job, banning these tossers so when I fall out of bed I can move them so the true members can enjoy Chordie for what it is. But it's not just me and Doug. All us mods do our utmost to keep Chordie clean and friendly.

Maybe little known to regular members is the work that goes on around the world (believe it or not) to moderate and enhance if possible and to help members enjoy their Chordie experience.

It would be great if we could dispose of these spammers permanently but it seems to be less straightforward than it might appear. So please everyone bare with us.

I tried building a guitar once with piano strings, a toilet seat and a broom handle but I couldn't get any tension between the 4 inch nails....I was 8 at the time.

Good luck with your project hope you can get the strings to align. I was going to suggest the same as Jim. Sounds like the bridge is slightly wider than the bottom of the neck or positioned off centre?

I wish these spammers would take a week off don't they know I'm in pain here? I've banned and moved a load of spam this morning and as I'm moving them another post appears! Per, this could become a full time job.

I've never really thought about the saying LOL but some of these posts really made me chuckle so thanks for that as I've had an awful night trying to sleep. I finally got off at around 7.30 so my daughter could wake me up an hour later....pain, illness, death come second to babysitting.

Peatle and Jandle, so sorry I wasn't aware of your problems and also Jim on the other side of the world, let's all heal up quickly. Sounds like Roger is just going through puberty?

Joe, you're just entering the danger zone, I pulled my ham string at 59 playing badminton...not a lot of fun.

Jeezzz Russ you youngsters got it easy; money for nothing and your chicks for free. LOL

thanks for your concern and good wishes guys, i honestly thought no one would show interest in an old trouper playing silly burgers. Jim i feel your pain, Ann took a tumble over the handlebars a couple of years ago and broke her collar bone she was in agony and a few years before that she broke a few ribs.....accident prone or what?

Zurf, we have the national health service over here where you go to see your doctor or to the hospital and get your treatment free so you don't get to call an orthopaedic surgeon out of hours...unless you're happy to pay through the nose or it's life threatening.

thanks for the reminder TF, but i wish you'd told me sooner. LOL

yep that's right, you see last weekend the family drove up to Birmingham England for bank holiday weekend to visit my oldest granddaughter and her partner. on Saturday we decided to take the train to Stratford-upon-Avon, of course i wanted to visit the bards home. there was some kind of fate/gala thing going on so we went to the canal then into the park area to play a few games with the kids. during a game of rounders, sort of like baseball but lower key, much lower key, granddad here went to catch the ball and took a tumble, i thought i could do a barrel roll and land on my feet as i used to do when i was 26. instead i landed heavily on my shoulder and they called an ambulance which took me to Warwick hospital where they told me i hadn't broken my collar bone but i had dislocated it and it was plain to see as it protruded from my shoulder by 2 inches! i was then told it could not be manipulated back into place as it was completely out of joint, so an operation would be needed....arghhh! but as it was bank holiday the fracture clinic was closed and come back Tuesday for an assessment. i told them i go home on Monday so they said go to your local a&e so they can sort you out there.
it all means that i cant drive, i have to eat with one hand and get someone else to cut up my food. worst of all....i cant play guitar as it's my right shoulder. one good thing is my wife has to wash me down in the shower...every cloud?

You can buy or record your own backing tracks, I'm not as clever as Russ and Grah, they will take the guess work out of the equation.

Sounds like an exciting project, I wish I had the guts to do something similar. Russ Harding has built several guitars, maybe he can give you some pointers if you get stuck? Doug is also a master of many talents and I'm sure there are quite a few others on here too. Can't wait to see the results.

Thank you, Phill and by the way, that's a Rogue Beatle Bass. The price difference between it ($200.00 USD) and the Höfner authentic is about $1200.00 USD! There's also a little difference in the size...... Maybe in the next life? smile

Who cares as long as it plays good. It's like a pair of slippers and your brand new brogues....one is comfy the other hurts your feet. Which do you wear around the house. Comfort wins every time.

Even if you don't have time to play, they're a joy to look at.....

Yes TF that's the one. I've been playing for over 50 years and I never knew about it! I'm scared to pull them as much as Joe did incase I break one. It does work though. I'm going to look into locking tuners.

Hi Jim, I like your recording, you've got your Bob Dylan voice on and it suits the song perfectly. At the moment I am up to my neck in things I have to do. It's been a really busy couple of weeks and this week is no exception. I'll take another look when I get a chance.

There's a famous band in the UK called the Shadows, Bill knows of them. I recently saw a video of their final tour where the lead guitarist (Hank Marvin) explains why he changes guitars so often during the performance, he says it's because when they started out in the late 50's he used heavy gauge strings, which I expect were flat wound too. As time went on and string technology improved he moved like most of us to lighter round wound strings.
There's a youtube video of Joe Walsh demonstrating how he changes strings, just like all of us I expect until he gets to his final tuning where he grips the string and pulls it out to get the stretch out of them, then tunes again. It's quite interesting and worth watching, sorry but I don't have the link.

Bill my friend, you do whatever you need to, priorities come first, we'll be here waiting for your reports as they come in, when you have time. I cant imagine your loss, or should I say I don't want to imagine it. I've always felt it's the kids that bury the parents not the other way round. So my friend look after dear Dondra, and don't forget to look after yourself.

Wow that gold top looks the biz. Very impressive collection there I hope you're giving them all the attention they need?

Do you play I SAW HER STANDING THERE on the (Hoffner?) Violin bass? Good finger excersise.

On my electrics I like 9s, 10s or 11s on acoustics. On my Strat I used GHS Boomers as they sounded and felt the best. On my Tele I use Fenders, I can't work out why there's such a difference in two guitars made by the same people? So, I put a new set on the Tele last night as the old ones wouldn't let my fingers slide on the strings. I'll have to start changing them more often.
Down side is; new strings don't sound right till they get a bit dirty.

Thanks Tyson. When I can't actually play her cos I'm busy I pop in my studio just to look at her...I think it's love.

Hi Topdown, as soon as I figure out how to post a picture I will and let you know.

Thanks all

Hello Robert, nice to hear from you again.

You've written your poem out like a song so I'm guessing it's a song that's not quite finished yet? Just the chords to go. Great sentiment and a great poem about angels and loving someone enough to know their being watched over.

I don't know much about guitars, I'll admit it, I do know there is a National, but they are all steel? I didn't realize Fender made one too, but I see it's of mainly wood construction. It looks cool. Enjoy

I'd be interested to know how you get on with it? Do you play slide already, or are you going to learn as you go?

Billy Connelly is brilliant. I must admit I've never heard his version of 10 guitars before. But the words are so true about the little old lady (I've met her in so many clubs) and especially the part about ripping Englestick Uncleburts tonsils out.... it's amazing how songs with just 2 chords and a minor can be so Popular.

And the guitar is good too it's like being 18 again and finding yourself on a desert island with a very friendly dusky maiden....I just can't keep my hands off her.

Hi Zurf she's actually telling people that it was her idea! Work that one out. We sat up till 2 in the morning playing bits of song's and riffs and she kept going ooh ah. I think she loved the tone too.

Thanks Jim it is.

Thanks J3 Wednesday must have been one of the best days of my life. We played bingo (yes I know but what else can you do when you're on a bus for 3 hours?) And I won almost enough to pay for the Tanglewood. Sorry I just like saying it...

Hope your family get there safe

I had 7 guitars including 3 Fenders. My go to guitar was my Crafter, which I still love dearly. But on a day out to Weston-Super-Mare yesterday, I spied a music shop and in I went. There were several Tanglewoods there but I was drawn to a lefty Tanglewood Odyssey. 10 minutes later I was walking out of the shop with it under my arm! Shocking, I have never bought anything that quick. I loved it from the moment I laid eyes on it. I played it and the tone was gorgeous even with old strings on. The feel was great, the arm and the action was superb.

I've never been one for buying anything just cos it's expensive or got a famous name, I just wanted to try it to see if it made any difference. It did and I bought it. One happy bunny, now to face the wife.....

"Darling I now have 8 guitars...." Ahhhhh!

I have just the one brother who I lost contact with a few years back, I hope that some day we can once again see eye to eye, even though there was no argument or fight, I must have made some stupid remark that I would certainly regret if I knew what it was. Sorry about that, this brilliant piece of poetry reminded me that I am a stubborn and obstinate fool, and unless I am mistaken, the best poetry makes pictures in our mind and makes us face up to our lives. This poem does that in spades. Well done.
