Well you know Russell,
Minstrel is still an honored profession in the old country.  You might be able to travel the continent on your good looks, charm, and a hat-full of tunes!

I've packed my stuff in a duffel and am moving mics, mixer, stands, and cables over to Jeff's this afternoon (where my amps and electric noise-makers are stored).  Gonna try and hammer out some kind of tune for you.  Perhaps a change of venue will rattle loose some words to go with....

If not, at least it will have served as an excuse not to have accomplished a darn thing constructive today.  Making music always trumps the to-do list!

Hi Roger,

If you will recall from one of Russell's earlier videos, there were slides interposed professing that he was not only single... but independently wealthy!

I'm sure he could dispatch a small jet (from his fleet) to transport you to and from.  Providing your passport is in order, of course.
I've heard that Homeland Security is on the alert for guitar toting terrorists that may try to infiltrate the Country via Portugal!

No worries though, the accommodations at Guantanamo Bay are exceptional I hear. LOL

Hello Rock Masta and a hearty welcome to  Chordie!

You certainly have come to the right place to find anything you would ever want to know about guitar playing and the music... which at the end of it all is why this forum and website was created.

There are a whole bunch of creative and knowledgeable folks that hang out here that can surely share their experiences and answer most any question you can come up with.  Chordie is a global community with a common interest in music and we are happy you have joined our ranks!

On the home page you are going to find a section labled public songbooks over on the right side.  From there you can browse all of the songbooks assembled by members, many of which are going to be right there in your experience level, and you can use their song selections to build yourself a repertoir.  Print the ones you know and like to learn and start playing!  Don't be afraid to try songs that seem beyond your skill, because everytime you try a new chord (there are charts on the music), you will add to your own skill.

Visit often, ask questions, and have fun with your music.... it just keeps getting better!

Again Welcome Aboard and Take Care;  Doug

Dear Lena,

That was very good!  Sadly I can identify with every one of those "downright impossible" things.... another reason I quit drinking!

That, and being a professional drinker doesn't pay as much as it costs.

Hey Riddler,

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you what I got.... kind of a truck-stop-juke-box number, but I lost an air line and screetched to a halt!

And for you Russell... I knew there was a little sadist in you trying to find a way out!

Gosh I thought I would already find a "whining" section over here,

Been bashing away at this thing for awhile now.... but so far not bashing my guitar off the walls or anything like that.  Few new bumps on my head maybe....

Really having a hard time getting started with the lyrics, not having written anything poetic in like a couple of decades.  Perhaps it is an assumption on my part that the lyrics should be well in hand before fitting in the melody?  tips?

Did manage to get a bit on paper that may have promise for a future project.... but no way close fit to the melody in hand.

Undeterred... Forward March!  Illigitimus non corborundus!

Thank You Roger for those words of encouragement, and Russell... I don't think I ever mentioned my living/working on a chicken ranch while in college.... did I?

Ah, fond memories of rounding up the pullets for banding season.... the smell of burnt feathers at thinning time!

Seriously though, I have been a "session musician" for so long now, I 'm not sure I have the "skills" to write.  But I will post my pleadings on the recording section under challenge,  perhaps in a new sub-topic like "whining".

Thanks and Take Care;  Doug

Hello Roger,

Not being a lyricist myself, although I can find my way around the English language (and stumble through a couple others), I have taken it upon myself to disqualify myself from this particular "challenge", on the grounds that I heard the original tune in it's entirety prior to Russell's introduction.

Possession of insight of what his vision for this piece was, might lead me towards that end, and tilt an otherwise level playing field.
I currently have a jazz instrumental that is in need of tweaking that I should devote a bit of effort into before it goes stale. So for the moment.... however if you find yourself in need of a backup acoustic or technical assist, give a shout.

Greetings Kane,

Like you I tend to use a thin pick, but very rarely... usually when playing my electric and need to wail.  Acoustic, it's all flesh and steel with those fingernails for the heavy work.  You get really good with an emery board!  Anyway check out Don Ross and Andy McKee on youtube and pay attention to their fingers.... claws actually. You will see what I mean, it is easy to go from soft to hard by curving or straightening your digits and bringing either meat or claws into contact with the strings before the pluck.

I never could get used to those thumb and fingerpicks clamped around my tips... darned annoying!

Hey there Guitarpix,

Looked at the photos.... Nice Martin!  A word of caution about buffing out the satin finish though.  Sure would be nice to find out what finish was applied stock.  Polyurethanes will have enough film build to buff, but if they used a more traditional finish like nitrocellulose laquer with a flatting agent (powdered oyster shell), there may not be enough finish to take a lot of reduction.  Also with a flatting agent you likely will not ever be able to get a high gloss finish.... maybe just a higher gloss.  In which case the best option would be to overcoat with gloss and buff it in.  Laquers tend to be hot, so if you are unsure about what's under it be careful!

I'm pretty sure "wrinkle finish" isn't going to be pleasing if it blows up!

Tortoise shell is ichi ban! IMO

Greetings Chordians,

The title is blatant advertising, but before this thing gets promptly trash-binned, be aware that I am advertising the new Recording section in Chordie which may have been overlooked in passing.

For those of you who have been following the Audacity and Idea threads here in the Chat Corner, you might have noticed.

One of the newer topics over in the Recording section is "Challenge", and although I had considered putting this in the "Songwriting " section, thought better of it.  Anyway Russell has tossed down the gauntlet for all you lyricists and arrangers out there to assist him in taking one of his little melodies and turning it into a song worthy of recording.  Basically there is a melody line as a rough guideline from which to build, and not much else....

Imagination and creativity is needed, and for those of you who would like to take a stab at it, all are welcome to participate!

Thank You Moderator for your patience and feel free to edit/incinerate this at your discretion.

Hi Scrivadam and Crimhedd,

What about the other side of the continent?

Anyway, I have read lots of posts looking for "players near to _________" in chordie, and am wondering what success that brings.
I have a little group of folks locally that I jam with on a weekly basis, which is nice, but can kind of get to be a drag doing the same kind of tunes all the time.  Which is why I have been following the Recording section of Chordie and especially the "virtual band" element of that thread. You know, kind of a get out of your element experiment.... where you do some kind of progressive jam.

So if you are looking to stretch your legs and are into collaberation on musical projects you might give it a read.

Have fun with your music.... it just keeps getting better!

Not a one liner, but....

What exactly IS a pasturized processed cheese food?

Looks like cheese, but if the folks that make the stuff feel that it is necessary to TELL you that it is food.... should you really eat it?

Just Wondering;  Doug

Sorry Jerome, don't get up to Seattle area much, but do have a brother in Kingston (out on the Island).

But pleased to see that someone has finally picked up a Breedlove so we can get a good review!  I have a friend who worked at the Breedlove Factory over in Tumalo Oregon and I really liked the one he built for himself.  I do get over that way a couple of times a year and keep trying to find time to tour the plant.  Was over there earlier this month on a quick weekend trip, but just couldn't find time to make that stop (darn it!).

Not a lot of dealers carry the brand, even though they are very good quality for a decent price, so I have not had opportunity to lay hands on more than just the one.... but I have to admit it was lust at first strum!

Really would like to test drive one of the electrics though.....  added to my christmas wish list.

But do enjoy that Atlas!  Like good wine spruce tends to get better with age.

Thanks Riddler!

That link took me there.... nice instruments and lots of sound bytes to hear what Guitaardocphil was saying.

Doc,  I can see why you are so fond of that member of your collection.  Has the body style of an LP Gibson and the resonance of the Gretsch, especially the Starcaster.  Mahogany bodies of uniform density are always great for sustain and fullness of tone so I would think that is why it has the sound that is so pleasing to so many ears.

A very good addition to your collection my friend!

Take Care, and thanks for bringing this continental brand to our attention.  Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of them out there!

  Doug

Hello again Doc Tony,

I know what you are saying about the 80/20 thing, however I find that I rarely use a plectrum if at all.  My early guitar experience was on nylon classical instruments, and as such developed an affinity for that fingered style of playing.  Fingernail maintenance is paramount in achieving proficiency with steel stringed instruments (the nails get torn easily by wires), but very nice when well executed  (I'm still working on that "well executed" part after more than 30 years!).

As far as your peers being surprised by your broad interest in differing musical styles... man I don't know what to say.  Granted there are folks out there that are narrow-minded, but we have all to remind ourselves that there are only so many keys and their respective notes on that piano.  Just about every conceivable combination of those notes has been played at one time or another by someone else.  The ones that are actually pleasing are going to someday find themselves into a piece of music.  Even in a different genre.  It is to me, those surprising accidents of music which are heard in different cultures which somehow strike a hint of familiarity, that binds us musically as a species of commonality.

Rejoice in your own ability to appreciate what some around you have closed their ears and minds to.

Hi Doc,

You know I have tried to get to see this fine guitar via the link you provided a couple of times now without success.... I think I will try the other spelling and see if it gets me there.
www.duesenburg.com  (nope that takes me to Duesenburg automation)  Is it possible that the site is not available to those of us across the "pond"?   I'll keep looking though, you've peaked my curiousity!

Good Evening Ookalaylaylady.... I almost misspelled that one!  Welcome to Chordie!

Most threads here are sort of active in that they are scanned for new posts regularly so if one would have questions or comments they will be seen, and responded to appropriately.

If you are relatively new to the site, by all means browse around and you can find opinions and information (most of which is quite useful) from this global community of music-minded friends.

Once again Welcome and we will look forward to hearing from you from time to time, great friendships are forged from the first hello.....   HELLO!

Good Day to you Doc,

You might want to check out the Chordie section "Recording", moderated by Russell Harding, for some tips and tricks as well as software guidance.  I think Russell uses a BR 600 in his recordings and could give you some valuable advise and information about that particular piece of equipment.

  You Take Care;  Doug

Good one Zurf... we'd almost forgotten about the Rangers.

  Motto:  "One riot.... One Ranger".

But I always wondered where the U.S. (Federal) Marshall's Office falls in to the equation?  Especially in so far as limits of jurisdiction.  Haven't their roles in law enforcement been basically replaced by the FBI?

Hello lplinne, and welcome to Chordie!

Sadly I am not familiar with the song you requested, but I might point you to a lyrical search website that might have the information you seek.  www.letssingit.com

Usually they will have the lyrics (without music) and will credit the original composer, and recording artists.

Good-on-ye Russell,

I thought the "perks" were something like a jar of pickles and bottle of single malt..... I didn't recall reading anything about a Limo.
You didn't wangle some kind of special deal did ya?  If so, I need you to negotiate the salary and benefits package on my next job!

Looking forward to some great original music coming out of this forum, and hope this is a good alternative for all those folks looking for people to make music with.

Best of Luck to all, and Take Care;  Doug

Special thanks to the Chordie Administration for this new addition.
