We all know who SRV is, but here in Europe, we are less familiar with his older (?) brother Jimmy.
I just know that he teached Stevie some guitar, and isn't he a member of "the fabulous thunderbirds"?
I really wanted to know a few things
- Is he still active?
- Is he a real good guitar player
- Maybe really stupid: did they play often together, and on a scale of 100 (Stevie Ray), how high Jimmy will score compared with his brother

About Gibson, you can even "listen" to a lot of humbuckers, or P-90 coils, they give you at least an idea how they sound.

Hi Tibernius, I wrote some topics about:
- acoustic and affordable good guitars.
- electric guitars: same
I included price ranges, you should check these topics. So one of the electric guitars was an epiphone sg classic versus an epiphone sg, classic 199€ the other 299€. I would go for the cheaper, I played it and (it is subjective) preferred the 199€.
I have probably 25 guitars now, it started stupid, and I had some real luck with my "collection", but since on chordie, I have all the time, I am searching for real good low priced guitars.

TRICKY QUESTION.
My opinion is that MOST of people start to play guitar for 2 reasons.
- you love the guitar and playing on it, but just as hobby.
- you play guitar because you are convinced to become famous.
It is an ugly topic, because I started playing guitar 30 years ago, and of course my dream was to become popular. I was already on MED  school, and until today I have that question.
There are SUPER hobby players, but they never get famous.
Will busking help you? Maybe, it takes courage to pick up your guitar and to play on the street alone or with a friend.

I know that a few people who posted a song on myspace or youtube became famous.
Who is here the "determinator"', see the man who didn't give the Beatles a contract, because he prefferred the Tremeloes. Can you blame him? I think NO.
Just play because you love to play, I saw groups, musicians in Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans, playing in bars, and at least 50% of them I would give them a contract. Isn't it there that the  problems start, you play since the beginning and some IDIOT tells you that you are to ugly to play in this band, or any reason.
WHAT CAUSES THE MAGIC see Lennon Mc Cartney or Jagger Richards?

THERE MUST BE SOME CHORDIANS I hope who are familiar with a harp? I think it's a fantastic instrument, it gives you the impression of floating on clouds. I have seen, maybe 2 or 3 harps, on house call visiting patients. Unfortunately it was almost only decoration. They received it from a deceased member of the family and couldn't play.
Harpsichords: do they still exist?

What is ther definition of surf?
I love the Beach Boys, but listening to their music, it is more real Rock and Roll.
Is it because it started on the west coast, and was popular music for surfers.
I don't have a clue.

On my search to find RAINSONG guitars, I saw a few videos on youtube about people playing a CHAPMANSTICK.
Who is familiar with this strange instrument, sounding like a guitar.
I found also that there are different kinds, from 6 strings to 7... 12

Good morning Ziggy Stardust: are you a David Bowie fan? I play since years, the animals were still talking, and I can squeeze almost everything out of an acoustic and electric, and just recently, I started some (mini solo's) I have the impression that you have it or you don't have it.
I am almost 52 years old, and my style of playing can be compared to Keith Richard's style, this is for 5%, using riffs and licks. Now and then I can play some solo, but I make it more complicated where it should be easy. I LEARNED IT THROUGH TOPICS, READING CAREFULLY WHAT IS WRITTEN, I TAKE MY GUITAR, ALWAYS ONE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND TRY. I learned a lot by asking about the blues scale.

ssttsstt did your guitar sound different if you compare the before and after the treatment?
I am glad that the top of my guitar is almost normal, having 2 Hummingbirds and a dove (also early sixties, I have the impression that the dove and hummingbird, both sixties, give me a more metallic sound.

I told already that I had the honor to be MD on one of the biggests popfestivals in Europe.
I was "backstage" only responsable for the "bands". I saw and learned a lot there. I can tell that I have seen an evolution from 1982 ----> 1996, I stopped and left the unpaid job to another doctor.
In the beginning, there was a lot more drugs, marihuana and hash and alcohol, in 1996 the groups were more clean, and they ordered less, and they used vitamines, fruit...
I had a real close contact with even the biggest names. I saw that the groups, or singers, in fact all celebrities like Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, The Cure, the Jam... were really nice guys, but the "sharks"were horrible. Those people, like roadmanagers and others found themselves more important than the musicians. Thanks to my real nice conversations, I was asked to come on stage, Neil Young asked me that I was on stage, behind curtains and not really visible. I swear that as a little shrimp with Neil Young, The Cure, Foo Fighters and others, you get a "kick" seeing the crowd singing using sigaret lighters was abnormal fantastic, it is a feeling that you can compare with the feeling the artists get on stage. Backstage, rule number one was: DO NOT DISTURB THE MUSICIANS, I had the luck that they invited me in their trailer, using a medical advise or treatment. Dave Grohl invited me to come over end of august 1996. I had all his private numbers, I could sleep there and he planned almost everything, like going in a studio, where REM recorded a new album, play together, and I phoned him that I couldn't come. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I probably ever made in my life. We kept in touch for a few months and as it is like always, those things end. I still regret this "miracle". I still remember what he toldme about Cobain and he HATED Courtney Love, accusing her indirectly as the reason why Cobain died (Not believing in suicide, as alot of people did). This was a once in a lifetime offer, I was just afraid to go back on Holiday, only 3 months after travelling in South Africa), to loose a lot of patients. About the Smiths, I don't like their music, same thing for the Cure. I was on stage whenthey performed and I saw at least 500 look a likes.
Maybe I should try to listen better to the Cure, Smiths BUT THEY ARE SO DARK.
Moddish you write what I think, one music style influence other groups, who influence again others, but I have it difficult to understand how music styles are born.

I have so many guitars, and 1 hollow body: an old Epiphone Sheraton, with a fantastic sound, if you keep a longer distance, because of the feed back.
So
- If you have a hollow body, is it better to plug it in an acoustic amp? Or an electric amp, still thinking about the fabulous, but underestimated ALVIN LEE & 10 years after on a 335 Gibson?
- Which guitar is the best a solid body or a hollow body, it is not so easy to make a conclusion, knowing that guys like BB King, Chuck Berry, could play a damned good heavy rock song AND use it to play jazz, so my opinion is that you can do more with a hollow body, than with a solid body, as told: blues, rock, jazz, ballads, pop (see also the sixties) and used by great names and groups, Beatles, Byrds, Jazz legends, Blues legends like BB

Upyerkilt, I agree. Isn't it strange that we are looking everyday in the mirror and we don't see that we are getting older and ugly. While in front of the mirror, I am still that very good looking 20 tears old man, TAKE A PICTURE and there goes your "nice looking boy" seeing a fatter, man, with grey hair or being bold.
Same with singing: if you hear yourself on tape, you can't believe that this is you speaking or singing. It is caused by the fact that when you talk, sing, it is absorbed, and your skull (the natural cavities, like the nose, the sinusses reflecting your voice inside your head. This is medical again, and I have to stop with all medical things because it is really painful for me to go back in time.

David, first nice to meet you, and what you write is what I was intended to do. I have a Gibson Hummingbird with that problem and it seemed to complicated for 2 of them and waiting time was 2-3 years, to handle my guitar to a professional acoustic guitar builder (there are a lot more electric guitar builders). So a friend who is obsessed by guitars, the technical side, placed a little wooden device to lift the top.
That's the reason why I asked if someone was familiar with such device. The guitar sounds really nice, is from the early sixties and having one from the seventies, it is always difficult to compare.
My 3 most played acoustics are a Gibson SJ-200 Montana Gold, a Martin D-45V and a HD-28, better than Gibson dreadnaughts, but this is my opinion.

Zurf, I read that you were a musician as a kid. One thing I don't get is the fact you wrote that it's more difficult now. But this is my question: what do you mean by difficult. Is it the fact that you "forgot" what you played? Even now, in my situation, I play a few chords, and suddenly THERE IT IS a song.
I have to go to the bathroom (there is also 1 guitar) so better picking up the telephone and 30 minutes blablabla, I want to play that, still subjective, nice song, and I am unable to find it back.
This is a painful thing, or I didn't notice until now, that song wasn't good and I forgot how to play.
About missing your guitar, I have a lot of them, take my stratocaster US made 1964, too expensive and the prices are going up, following the vintage book, with prices, 2005: 10.000$
2006: 15.000$ and 2007: 20.000$. I prefer more to play on my PRS guitars, and if I should sell the Fender, I can buy 2 really, even better guitars using 5000$ for a strat and 5000$ for a tele, and 10.000$ on my bank account, I CAN'T do it, and the prices of vintage guitars are better than buying a share from a big concern, but 20.000$ for a piece of wood with strings I have one strange question: who started things like this? I know that in 1980, a Gibson LP Standard 1959, was not expensive, so who determines the value. I was told that guitar guru's like Gruhn are responsable.

TO ALL WHO IS INTERESTED, I FOUND ONE 1, on youtube.
Search: rainsong GRAPHITE guitars, or you will just find Led Zeppelin.
I hope I was helpful, it took me some time to spot them.
On a video someone is playing one, but there is too much noise.
But as far as I heard, it sounds real nice

Also a very strange instrument is the CHAPMANSTICK who is familiar with this strange instrument?

mrj, I am a guitar lover and was able to build a nice collection during the years.
I don't have a Taylor, a Collings, a Breedlove, but I do have a Gibson hummingbird, a Dove, a SJ-200 Montana gold and a bunch of Martin's like HD-28 and the D-45V. Gibson dreadnoughts are very good, but I prefer the SJ-200, deep warm sound, and on the other hand, one of the best is my HD-28, blowing away all other dreadnoughts, and very nice sound.
I visited the rainsong website, I was desperately looking on youtube and myspace to HEAR someone playing a "rainsong" I did find a lot of rainsongs, but all LED ZEPPELIN.

jaminfesteddonkey, where are you from? If from Europe you should absolutely try to buy a guitar in the USA (€ versus $) some websites, go first to the websites, then you go to see what ebay offers. www.zzounds.com www.musiciansfriend.com, go also to www.gibson.com, and the self declared guitar guru www.gruhn.com
I hope this helps, because you can see a lot of gibsons on line, and looking at them, to compare.
On the www.gibson.com, you can even listen to different sounds see humbuckers.
For an acoustic: same thing.

I am still regretting that I didn't continue to play piano, being 10 years old. My "BIGGEST" problem is BEING IMPATIENT, and speaking of that, I noticed that it was already there when I was young, everything has to go fast. Visiting a museum, like the "LOUVRE" it takes me 1-2 hours, but if you compare my visit with a person who was there 4 hours, I know more than he does. This is a real problem sometimes, being busy with 3 different things at the same time. I see it more as a curse than a good thing. Same things on holiday: I am able to do more on 10 days than a tourist is doing in 20 days, speaking of the same trip.
But piano? I can play some notes, but I prefer the guitar. I also think that when you look for songs, you can spot songs written on piano versus written on guitar.
An instrument I adore is a "harpsichord" DO THEY STILL MAKE THEM? Not in a hi-tech keyboard.

Upyerkilt, concerning "reading" we are similar.
1/ when I read, I am reading diagonal, when still at the university, THAT was my salvation, I was able to read and learn about 200 pages a day, and remember them.
2/ I am more a DVD watcher, BECAUSE IT IS AS MY MIND IS ABSORBING THINGS without doing an effort. Reading: I am too lazy, Movie: my mind clears up completely and it's so relaxing.
3/ What I do read are magazines, 1 to see all the gossip, and 2 magazines about guitar.

A beautiful example is CANADIANS: Neil Young, who had to return after 3 months USA.
Do "foreign musicians" have to return back to their home land, because you are allowed to stay there for 3 months?
Do foreigners get their green card more easy, like Celine Dion?
What do you have to do to get a green card? In my situation, being disabled, but also having a "royal fee" every month?

I still like the fact, or better the dream to come together one day to jam together chordians only.
This is a dream, and I think it can be realised, even with sponsors, like music stores, on line stores and the best place should be Las Vegas.
