We're here.  Not a lot of bass parts here, but it's a good place, anyway.

In August of 1949, 15 Smokejumpers of the US Forrest Service dropped on a routine fire at Mann Gulch, north of Helena Montana.  Less than two hours later, 13 of them would be dead or mortally wounded.  Norman McClean committed this tragedy to memory in his book "Young Men and Fire."

This song was inspired by that book, as well as my father, who was both a native Montana boy, and a fire fighter as well.

The Battle of Mann Gulch Thirteen Stones

[Am]Lighting stikes on a Montana hill

[Em]The fire burns so bright

[Am]Missouri water flows down below

[Em]Smoke rising to fading daylight

Smoke [G]rising to fading [Am]daylight

[Am]Fifteen men circle low overhead

[Em]and step into skies unknown

[Am]With a faith as wide as a Montana sky

[Em]that by ten AM they'll be home

that by [G]ten AM they'll be [Am]home

[Am]The Earth will rage as [G]you've never seen

[F]Rivers flood and [Am] hurricanes scream

[G]But it's fire that burns it [Am]clean

[G]It's fire that burns it [Am]clean

[Am]Dodge collects his crew high on the plateu

[Em]far from the fire's roar

[Am]They'll move down the hill and attack from below

[Em]Just like a hundred times before

Just like a [G]hundred times [Am]before

[Am]But the fire crowned, and jumped the gulch

[Em]It was something they'd never seen

[Am]Dodge said "turn around boys, and head for high ground,

[Em]this fire is getting mean."

He said [G]"This fire is getting [Am]mean."

[Am]The grass is high and dry in the August sun

[Em]The fire has blown and it's gaining fast

[Am]Flames 100 feet high, they begin to run

[Em]But how long can they last?

[G]How long can they [Am]last?

[Am]Dodge kneels down with a flame in his hand

[Em]and starts a ring of fire on his own

[Am]He says "Huddle here boys, it's your only chance"

[Em]It's the last chance that they'll ever know

It's the [G]last chance that they'll ever [Am]know

[Am]Eyes red with smoke, wanting to scream

[Em]Voices fill with fear

[Am]They look at the blaze close on their heels

[Em]and say "Hell with that lets get out of here."

Hell with [G]that lets get out of [Am]here.

[Am]The Earth will rage as [G]you've never seen

[F]Rivers flood and [Am] hurricanes scream

[G]But it's fire that burns it [Am]clean

[G]It's fire that burns it [Am]clean

[C]Run for that [G]Montana sky

[C]The flames draw close

[G]Too tired to cry

[F]Do you see it now?[C]That beautiful sky?

[G]Watch as the fire burns it [C]clean.

[G]Watch as the fire burns it [C]clean.

[Am]Two get out over the top of the ridge

[Em]The fire passes Dodge unseen

[Am]But for 13 men there sit 13 stones

[Em]Where the fire burned it clean.

[G]Where the fire burned it [Am]clean.

[Am]For 13 men there sit [G]13 stones...

learn the beginning of Purple Haze. Moderately difficult with bends hammers and pulls and glissando.  Used to be a rite of passage, but still has some good basic techniques for any guitarist.
And you get to learn the Hendrix 9th (or what we old guys remember as the James Brown 9th).
And saying you can play some Hendrix is always cool.

By the way, what is a 9th, a type of chord shape or something?

A 9th is a chord that adds the 2nd note of the associated scale to the chord.  It is an extended 7th chord.

For example, a C9 would look like this.

C major scale.

C D E F G A B C

So C Major is

C E G

C7 is

C E G Bb   (dom7 flattens the 7th.

C9 would then be

C E G Bb D

I've been to literally thousands of shows in venues ranging from massive stadums to tiny little taverns.  I've come to the conclusion that the venue plays a huge part in any show.

Couple stand out though.

Any show at Iguana's in TJ is awesome.  Saw Janes Addiction there and Social Distorition.

Steve Earle at the Moore theater, as well as Bella Fleck.  I've seen Bella half a dozen times, though.  Other than Telluride, that was the best one.

Any show at the Gorge at George.  Except for Santan, who has kind of a "small venue" feel and didn't really fill it up.  Lenny Kravitz there was awesome, as was Rage Against the Machine.

Any show at Dimitreo's Jazz Alley in Seattle - Awesome food.  Bill Frizell there was fantastic.  Maynard Fergeson, not so much.

I'll see Wiley and the Wild West anywhere, at any time.

I love live sets.

Any song can be played with barre chords.  Just used the barred form instead of the open form of whatever chords you're playing.

New strings always sound good.  I wouldn't spend a whole lot on a set of strings.  Buy them in bulk, and change them frequently.

Having said that, the primary driver of tone for a guitar is the guitar itself.  No strings are going to make a beater sound like a masterpiece.  Put new strings on it, and if that doesn't improve things, go get a new instrument.

Flamenco style "rasgueo" strumming.

That stuff is cool.

Dad was an awesome guy, and he would have been annoyed by a bunch of people standing around weeping and wailing about it.  big_smile  I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers.  My family is vast and strong.

Doll, as an interesting aside, my new Sweet Irish Thing was in the states a few days after the accident on business, and had been scheduled to come and meet my family for a while.   So I picked her up at the airport, and dropped her off at the hotel, then went back to the hospital to stay with mom.  Two of my three sisters were there when I walked in.

First words out of there mouths when I walked in the room...  "Where is she?!"  They made me go back and get her, so her first introduction to my mom and sisters was in the hospital.   They all loved it.

People are strange.  Especially my people...

But anyway, that's my Saturday.

It's a three chord song.  It's deceptively easy to play, until you start to sing.  The rhythm of the lyrics is syncopated against the rhythm of the guitar, and it makes it one of those simple songs you really have to focus on to play well.

After a while the transitions for most three and four chord ditties will become natural.  You'll know when to transition even if you've never heard the song before.

The number in the model refers to the displacement of the engine.  The F650 is a 650cc single, and always has been.  The F800 is new, and it's an inline twin.  They're both great bikes, but they aren't even remotely the same engine.   It's still not up to KLR standards, particularly since you can get a brand new KLR for half what you'll pay for the Beemer.

And parts and service?  Beemer will bend you over.  And this is a dual sport.  It's gonna get dropped in the mud, and the snow, and the dirt, so those things come up.

Observe.

Note the fancy new KLR behind me, not tipped over.

All the GS's are heavy.  Heck, all the BMW bikes are heavy.  I rode a 1200GS and I'll be honest, the boxer motor was pretty uninspiring. It felt like I was driving a Honda CIVIC.  The K1200R, though.  Now that was entertaining.

2.  Never scuba dive off of a sail boat in high winds.

why not? sad

Several reasons.

1.  Sailboats have very high gunwales, making them very difficult to re-board from the water, even in calm seas.

2.  As a result of 1, the way you reboard is remove your kit in the water, tie it off, and climb up the little aluminum ladders, then haul your gear on board.

3.  High winds == high seas.  This means that the sail boat will be rising and falling with those high seas.  So one moment, that ladder will be four feet over your head, and the next it will be slamming down so you can step onto it, and ride it up high like a rodeo horse, assuming you don't get crushed by it first.

4. Because your gear is tied off, you now have to fight the high seas and winds to get it back on board.

5. If you don't do a good job tying it off, you might find your brand new scuba rig floating down wind.

Sail boats make crappy dive boats in general.  It crappy conditions, they can be downright dangerous to dive from.

Five things I have learned...

1.  When using a grinder on a charged ammonia coolant system, ensure that the hole you grind is facing away from you, as the 9 foot high green ammonia flame that shoots out of it may cause burns.

1.5  It takes about 20 minutes for a huge cloud of ammonia gas to dissipate.

2.  Never scuba dive off of a sail boat in high winds.

3.  If you wake up with a broken leg and the dog has a shaved eyebrow, only the dog will truly know what happened.

4.  Tossing high charge capacitors at your friends is only funny until they toss one back at you.

5.  Snowmobile skis are not capable of supporting the sled if you drive it down a cliff.

The F650 is a single thumper, and I believe the engines are made by Rotax.  It's not what they rode in that movie.  What the guys rode in LWR was R1150GS Adventures.

If you can't afford a KLR, you surely can't afford the GS.

The KLR is the best all around dual sport made.    It's cheaper to purchase and own, lighter,  gets better mileage, and it's bullet proof.  It is tall, though, so if you're inseam challenged, the F650 may be a better option.

Jameson's is actually cheaper here in the states than it is in Ireland.   My sweet Irish thing picks up a bottle for her dad while she's here.

Makes no sense.

KLR.  That bike is bullet proof, and will do pretty much anything.
