Stratplayer wrote:check out guitarnotes.com look at the heading that says guitar and then guitar care and maintenance and you will find topics on guitar setup. Also if your strat is buzzing when you plug it in, it might be the volume or tone pots are bad. but they are easy to replace.
If it buzzes chances are bad ground (or earth depnding on what side of the pond your on) single coil pickups hum that is normal check a new strat that does not have noiseless pickups and they will hum. It is the way their designed (not intentionally) they hum.
As omeomi13013 post reads I take the buzz he is refering to is string buzz in which he already reconized as a real low action. Jaygordon is correct on the information to the Fender website and pots do go bad. Check the Guitar Specialtiy website they have strat volume mod wiring klits that give you everything except the pickups.
Goodluck.

Change strings, a little polish and that's about it. After reading the instructions and going to their website for support, I thought I might be able to handle this. The system is straight forward and there's no soldering. Just simple plugs. With some patients and careful fitting, you can save some money and do it yourself. oh, it sounds GREAT.
Nice! aren't the B-Band products great.

cytania wrote:I can see alot of potential advantages to commisioning a custom guitar like being able to specify options that the maker you are emulating does not offer. Being able to specify control placing and eliminate pick guards or f-holes. Of course there's always the dread possibility that I'd create a neither fish nor fowl; a halfway guitar that doesn't really add up, nightmare...
Cytania,
You are correct in regards to the options you can have built into a custom guitar. The only difference besides price of a custom/semi custom guitar and say the following brands Fender, Gibson, PRS, etc is the parts you choose. I built about 95% strat copies, swamp ash, black korina or alder body wood with either rosewood/maple or ebony/maple necks. The pickup configuration of either s-s-s or h x h and the wiring and or pots of my choice, some with pick guard some with out. So basically it is a strat built to my taste and paint/dye finish options. They aren't much different than the american Fender strats you can buy in a music store. With a custom guitar you choose any wood of good tonal quality and the options you want. It is still an electric guitar and up to the player's abilities to make it sound good. As far as resale value you'll never get back your initial investment only in pleasure not cash.

ebenami wrote:I'm a newbie with about three weeks of playing. I practice for an hour or two total daily, but usually only 10-15 minutes at a time. My fingers are starting to harden up, but I have some questions about the care & feeding of calluses.
1) I have enough thickness so that my fingers don't hurt much anymore, but at the same time, I might as well be wearing leather gloves when it comes to using my fingertips for just about anything. Will I still be able to feel the strings when these really develop?
2) Is it normal for each fingertip to have a groove cut in the callus? I don't mean a dent left over from fretting hard, but an actual groove cut into the hardened skin. It looks I've been playing the ignition file, not the guitar.
3) Should I emery down my calluses slightly to give a flat surface or anything similar? Is there any trick to it?
4) I've heard about soaking my fingers in lemon juice or vinegar before practice, but I've also heard that I'm not supposed to get my fingers wet before practice. What's this about?
5) If I should be so lucky, will my lover object to my scratchy calluses? Does anyone have any recommendations? (Not about finding a new GF -- just about the callus bit. And let's keep this one clean, folks.)
Thanks much everyone.

When you play long enough and everyday the tips of your playing fingers will have flat spot on thew top from playing.

Phil,
As Upyerkilt (or the king if you will) said my comment "are you an old softy" means that you are like a teddy bear. You show compassion for the other person and are not afraid to hide or show your emotions, you have a big heart. The meaning misunderstood might be taken as that I am insinuating that you are weak which by no means is true. If it was misunderstood as such please accept my apologies, by no means was it written to humiliate or harm you in any such way. I never write in spanish and I also taught myself to speak spanish (I live in California the official language is spanish) as well I am learning Mandrin currently but I spell it like it sounds. I would not want to attempt to speak or write French as I have no interest (no haters I just dont' want to learn). Keep on doing what your doing and remember opinions are just that everyone has one, like people not one is the same. If I did not believe what I have written I would not have taken the time to write this reply. But I consider the other persons emotions also and as you mentoned check the facts and have the information before a summation is made.

qoute from gitaardocphil: "I hope to have some answers, it is useful to know more about these "things", and it can hlp younger chordians."
Phil my friend,
The younger chordians should learn to use their amps and the tones they can get with out effects first. Then when that is established they can start messing with effect to shape and or change their tonal sound. I know your point and the eagerness to help but without practice and knowing what their amp & guitar combo can do they will not learn.

Jaygordon75,
What your going to find is original manufacture parts of guitars that have been taken apart and the vendors want big dollars for them. The show travels throught out the US and I have been to it in southern California. You'll pay more than if you searched out parts onthe internet and becareful of evilbay.

Phil,
As mentioned purist will love the warmth that you can only get with a tube amp. Showmanship is for the masses of people and helps sell tickets. Musicians are in for the artistry of the player and what they can learn or extrapiulate for the player. Myself I prefer the tube amp and the player with the true talent that can take any guitar (in tune of course) and make it sing.

gitaardocphil wrote:Selso, this answer is touching me. I repeat it, I am so grateful, and as far about "gitaardocphil" he still remains the same.
I helped so many people while still active as a DOC, and more and more do I realise that I get interested again. The help "thing" is still present, and I start to use it more and more, here on chordie. Sometimes it is difficult for me when I read what our young "chordians" write.
Also the financial problems, just because they want also a good guitar, and share the same passion. It is impossible for me to read this, without giving them advise.
My daughter who will be already 20 years on 24th December has the same character. We love each other so much, and it was difficult for me to do more things together, my mistake. My job was always number one, my private life, that's another thing. My skills, when still active as a Doc, are used to help.
Thanks a lot for all your nice and touching (me emotional) emails.

Now i feel like im making excuses!!
I genuinely am not interested in becoming anything other then a Chordie Member. I do not have the Music ability to do so. There are so many more
Chordie members who have. There post reflect this.
I dont wish to seem ungrateful to anyone, But i prefer to be just as i am.
Jeez Roger, you and that list will haunt me. How sad am i.

The Saga kit is a basswood body and the grain will not pop with stain. You'd have to sand through all the sealer that is on it. The reason for painting is usually a three or four piece joined body. That and some persons prefer paint to natural dyed grain and it takes alot of work to stain and color coat your clear. You would also want to upgrade the tuners, pickups and electronics. The saga kits come with bottom of the barrel electronics and hardware. I have a saga strat that I built, thats how I got started building by that one first for experience so I speak from experience. You can go to luithiers international supply they have tele kits in swamp ash or alder like the real american teles & strats. You still have to upgrade the electronics & tuners. They will put a kit together with grover tuners, paint or dye for around $ 300.00 american and their USA made bodies & necks. As for the tele headstock the Fender patent is if you are selling tele replica's as new fenders (putting fender decals on and trying to sell). Let me know if I can be of any help.

Phil,
Technically SRV was a better player than JLV, with that said JLV plays more traditional delta blues where as SRV played more Albert King type blues. Both are very good but SRV's music crossed over and was more accepted.

Take it as inspiration to strive to become as proficient as the video you seen. What good is all the technique in the world if you do not use it with soul and out of love of what your doing?

Your speaker may have rips in it causing the fuzz sound.

Change to a thicker gauge string or become a finess player, alot of the string breakage maybe to a hammer hand (heavy strumming).

You can put a push/pull volume pot if your humbucker is a 4 wire (4 wires and 1 ground connection) and split it for a single coil twang sound.

You will find that most of the Epi pickups are dogs thats why alot of people change them because they don't have the umpth!. With that said there will be alot of hate mail. Go to the seymore duncan website and they will have specs and a sample sound clip. SD'S are very well made and you pay for it.

You will find that for the most part the higer end acoustics are either a combination of spruce tops, maghogany backs and sides or rosewood backs and sides.
