I've always wanted an acoustic bass. 199 lbs sounds like a good deal.
I'm looking for a new bass today too.
It's a "year end clearance" from Topdawgz. He bought out a store that was closing. He's sold the rest of the inventory, but this bass has a technical problem, so I'm getting it as a project bass. It's a knock-off of a Fender P-bass. I'm betting I'll just need to replace the jack and maybe the pots. But if I do that then it's no more work to put in new pickups and maybe a different pick guard. And of course make sure all the shielding and grounding is good.
Photos later, once I actually have it.

Nice!
I need a new computer too. I got notice from HP a month or so ago that they are no longer going to support the model I have with parts or new drivers. So...I guess that's obsolete then.

I've been depressed most of the past three to five years or maybe even longer, and subject to panic attacks a lot longer than that. Everyone who doesn't suffer from it just gives you assignments. Do this. Do that. Change your schedule, your life, your diet, your habits. Great, just what someone with anxiety needs is more pressure and assignments.
I learned no one is going to help, but also that no one else is responsible, so it's up to me. I've spent about eight months now doing a rectal lobotomy to get my head out of my butt. My doctor wouldn't prescribe anything, so I researched herbal supplements that are double blind tested and found to as effective as prescription meds with fewer side effects. My doctor told me I should have come to her if I thought I needed medical supply when I reminded her that I twice requested support that she denied, and besides they're working so tough nuts. She can keep her drugs. I'm taking the herbs. That and prayer has helped me a lot. And I bought a bike. I love riding a bike. So prayer, herbs, bike. And with getting a little better at a time, a lot less booze. Doctors are worthless and counselors unavailable if you're not in crisis. Friends and family are nice but no help. Its up to the individual to help himself.
Edit to add: That was too harsh. Two kinds of friends are helpful. First, those who take you as you are. Topdown literally saved my life one year being nice just because he felt like it. A weekend away broke the very bad cycle I was in, and the near constant laughter at his antics and zest for life. The other kind are those who've been through it or are in it at the moment. Scripture teaches that iron sharpens iron. Metaphorically, I'd say that's right. Two depressed anxious guys with a stocked bar, a sailboat, and a big bay can do a lot of "therapy" in an afternoon. Beamer helped me a bunch, checking in and whatnot in the middle of his pain. Though we were 3,000 miles apart, I felt close. So friends are helpful. It's still up to the individual to deal with what's in his life, but friends that either understand or just take you as is make a difference.

As for me, I'm getting into the swing of being a bass player, spending my little free time learning to maintain and improve my instruments, and I am realizing that I'm going to have to do something I've been avoiding to learn my next step with guitar. I've been trying to learn slide and I have avoided alternate tunings. But I've learned that slide players almost all use open tunings.

Milli, I grew up in the state of Pennsylvania in the US. There's a version of German spoken there called Pennsylvania Dutch. The Dutch is a misspelling of Deutsch that has persisted. Anyway, your grammar with English took me home to the good people there, including my grandfather whose first language was also German, and made me like you immediately. I hope you keep sharing your growth as a musician with us.
Please let us know if there's anything you need musically, as we have all been where you are. The same things don't help everyone, but we'll share what insight we have and maybe you'll find it useful.

My guess is that Mississippi John Hurt didn't play the song the same way every time, and the folks doing the transcription may have listened to a different record than you did.

I haven't built one myself, but I'm on a luthiers page on FB, and the guys on there are usually impressed with the quality/price point for PitBull guitars: https://www.pitbullguitars.com/
Not sure how that fairs against places in the US, but with the currently lower Australian economy, could be a reasonable deal for you...

I'm thinking about building some of the kit guitars. I've been really enjoying learning about guitar repair, and thought it could be an interesting next step.
I don't have access to or space to build a proper workshop or I'd consider going from scratch.
Check out the offerings at thefretwire.com. (I have no association with that site) There's a 12 string ES 335 style guitar and a Gretsch hollow body arch top style bass that look interesting. Plus a resonator and a dual lap steel...
Anybody have comments, suggestions, or experience with these kits?

Teens are the ones with free money.
Been thinking of you lately DE. That Breedlove I bought from you has been converted to a laptop steel that I'm trying to learn. It's not going well, and I blame you. LOL!
On the other hand, Olivia is a dream to play. I've been playing bass at church as part of a broader band. We've got a lot of folks out of the area this coming week. Only the band leader and I are available for Nov 10. We're looking at him switching from guitar to keyboard and me switching from bass to acoustic rhythm or either hybrid or finger picked. If that happens, it'll be Olivia.
Regardless of what happens, I wish all Marines a Happy Birthday on Nov 10.

Maybe this will work. Here's Topdown (black guitar) playing his carbon fiber guitar in my camper in the midst of a dericho that blew up associated with a tropical storm. He didn't have to retune. But, Uncle Joe playing the traditional wooden flattop did have to retune. As did everyone who wasn't Topdown.

It flat out wore Topdown out not doing any retuning.

Topdown's is a Composite Acoustic brand rather than Rainsong. It's awesome in too many ways to count. But mostly, the low end when plugged in is AMAZING. It's an absolutely fantastic guitar. It may well be the best set up acoustic I've ever played. But please don't tell my Guild D40 or it may get jealous. If memory serves, Topdown bought it when he was doing a lot of traveling by car and wanted something that wasn't going to be harmed by being in a hot car all day before being pulled out to play in the evening. He got it, too.
I have played a couple Rainsongs. I liked them. I saw a couple of guys playing Rainsong guitars at a winery, and chatted with them during the break about their guitars. They both were in love with the guitars. For a touring musician, especially one doing small gigs that can go from an outdoor venue in direct sun one day to a high humidity basement gig the next, the Rainsong's have a lot going for them for someone who's gigging in a variety of environments and only has room for one or two guitars.

Upgrading components and installing proper shielding was sufficient without need for a gizmo. But that gizmo looks pretty useful for some circumstances.

Re: Played bass today at church (9 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Update on this. I've been playing every other week or so. Pretty much whenever I'm in town on both Thursday (rehearsal) and Sunday.
My fretless was giving some terrible 60 cycle hum into the mix. It wasn't getting into the house, but it was very loud and distracting in the monitors. So I checked it out and the components were cheap and there was no shielding. So I shielded all the cavities, put in new pickups, ran new wires (coax for the longer runs), did a little better job grounding at the bridge, put in a new high mass bridge, and replaced the pots and jack. The neck, body, and tuning machines are all that's left of the original, and the tuning machines are being eyed with suspicion.
After all this, it ran silently until I wanted to make noise. But once the amp was plugged into the board, hum. Plus there was some kind of signal cancelation because the bass would go silent in the monitors. The solution was to get a DI box that runs on phantom power so there's only one electric circuit involved. Boom.
Today was the first run with the rebuilt bass and new signal chain and it worked great.

Re: Fare Ye Well Robert Hunter (5 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
In 2003, I met Robert Hunter in Reno at a bar. I did not know who he was. I was playing at an open mic and when I said I was going to play three or four Grateful Dead tunes in a row- jam style- he asked if he could join me. He disappeared for about three minutes and returned with a 12 string Martin guitar. He was staying in the hotel the bar was located in.
I launched in to my version of Ripple and he smiled a big grin and said “I remember the night I wrote that song”. I thought he was full of it, but when we played Mexicali Blues he coached me about how to get a trumpet sound out of the guitar (sliding a d chord shape between second and first fret on the fly). Man, he was rocking it and I almost forgot the words I was so enamored with his playing. When I finished my set, he bought me a beer and introduced himself. Just wow. Told me the backstory to several songs, funny stuff about the Grateful Dead scene. Showed me a few chord tricks for these songs. Down to earth guy, very approachable. Enjoyed that evening and sorta became a GD fan after that. Hope to play many of these tunes with you at Chordie PA next week, Joe.
That is a super cool story.
