I have quite a few gigs I will go to this year and I am pretty sure, that most them are in one way or the other better than Metalica. Billy Bragg, Die Ärzte, Bruce Springsteen and Kettcar (a HUGE amount of bonus points to anyone who knows all four) are the next ones I think. Venues go from small club to stadium. We change. So does music.
If we keep thinking that only the music we first kissed to (or more) is "good" we can only grow old pretty fast. I don't want any of my heroes to stay stuck in what they did 20 years ago... I want to find new stuff... Franz Ferdinand and Maximo Park were bands I found by accident...

So: keep an open mind and an open ear...

Funny reading from across the pond. Basically all western european culture (exept maybe parts of the spanish one) is based on and heavily defined by christan ideas, concepts and values.

It's not by chance that the ten commandments are found more or less in all laws pretty much anywhere.

And sorry to say so but: culturally you Americans are pretty western european. However: IF there is a version of the Pledge without the reference to god, in my humble opinion it should be reverted to this.

Because it is good to remember that our rules, motifs, ethics, culture, music etc. is heavily based upon and influenced by christian belief, there are very good reasons to keep church and state seperate.

Here in Germany religious education is mandatory in schools and the church(es) have the right to decide what does and doesn't belong there. Bugs me like that place below (the h*ll word may be unsuitable, I sometimes have a hard time knowing what is and isn't).

Ok, enough incoherent rambling from afar...

Then lemme break the trend... If you are a beginner you need emotional rewards. And songs give you these. Sooo: yes practice chords, but look for songs to play with them. I propably never would have gotten the very fast Am - G change without Oasis looking back over my shoulder in Anger...

Cheers, Tom

First reaction was: Hey... I have a really good scout songbook in my links... *searching... finding... reading...*

DOH! That's what you get when you move semi-fluently between two languages... I don't think a lot of German Scoutsongs will be of much help, won't they?

A Radio station here in Germany calls it "Oma fiel ins Klo" Songs (roughly translates as: Granny fell into the toilet)... the original was of course "Oh my fellings grow"...

Sometimes it's not only hard, but next to impossible to hear the lyrics right (and on occasion that's the case in German for me as well). I finally found chords for a song I was searching for for ages and now I can't figure out parts if the lyrics... Sooo... if you Kyle or someone else wan'ts to give it a shot: When Justice Came by The Black Velvet Band

Some words are impossible to make out for me... So I guess sometimes it's next to impossible...

You'll start hating me when I again say "Find your own thing" aren't you? I wrote in another thread that I always look if there is some signature strumming in a song (Viva la Vida, First we take Manhattan... of course there are others) and try to build around it... also it helps if you try some 3/4 stuff (Irish Folk works good). And before you know it your hand will memorize different strumming for different types of song... Songs where there is change also are a good exercise (I am thinking of Amrican Pie here, or 99 Red Balloons...)

Keep it up and you'll soon see that whatever you play gets owned by you...

Just want to point out:

just because you buy sheet music, there is no guarantee that the songs will be anything like "official". With a lot of compilations it tends to be pretty much like here on the web...

I have a lot of "official" songbooks that are miles away from the real thing as well...

There is a three piece set of books here in Germany called "Das Ding" (The Thing). Together they offer about 4 inces of mostly well playable stuff (only few German titles in there) but they don't have patterns as well...

Hehe...

Weeeeeeeell, it could be a worse song, couldn't it? Imagine everything sounding like "I've been looking for Freedom"...

*g*

I had the same problem and sometimes still have it... I mentioned in another tread songs with "signature strumms" like "First we take Manhattan", "Viva la Vida" or "51st State of America". Figuring these out helped me quite a bit as well as trying to ust just downstrokes for a while and such...

Happy hunting for the "Right Stuff" ( tm)

Hey Joe (sorry, couldn't resist that one...),

I just try to let my right hand find the pattern... sometimes a song has a notable characteristic that you absolutely have to include in your strumming (Viva la Vida or First we take Manhattan spring to mind) but mostly you can and should try to make the song your own. Same with the chords: for someone (usually the guy who wrote them down in the first place) these chords work ok. For someone else (usually me) they might not. So it's back to your own version of song and chords and pattern and maybe even lyrics...

Germany has it's share of blockage as well... but for the Beatles it's usually good invested money to get a real songbook...

Good Luck... I wan't a band as well...

Whenever I do have an audience (even if it's just the cat) Robbie Williams "Let me entertain you" works like a charm... also: Unlikely stuff like "Edge of Glory" is fun with the guitar... (Ok, I feel the need to justify myself here: I don't like Lady Gaga... but I can't bring myself to not like the Big Man's last recordings). Coldplay, Plain White T's, Green Day... Are my books public? lemme check, but there is lot's of rubbish in there as well...

Ok... maybe I am too much punkrock here... make the song your own... screw what the artist did with it... it's yours now. There is no right or wrong, there is just you and your guitar... (which may on occasion weep gently...).

What I mean to say: let your hand do the work, try and try until you reach someting good, which will in turn evolve into something brilliant...

And THEN try to play country roads in less than one minute with all the chords...

Under SOPA it would take only ONE single rights holder to force Chordie to shut down. If I then were to provide chords on my server here in Germany, PIPA would see to it that you wouldn't be able to access it and if you did via a proxy or such you could get into serious trouble.

The sum of SOPA and PIPA makes censorship in China and Iran look like outdated attempts.

You upload something to facebook, and with no judge or such involved someone can say: facebook, you need to shut down because you didn't see to it that my intellectual property wasn't uploaded to your site.

Yes, it would be effective. But so would amputating hands to prevent guncrime...

click would drive me nuts... plus if I ever used a real metronome, the cat would for sure start chasing it...

If you aren't in it for the money: play what you like... which does not mean it's not important. YOU just have to really really LIKE it...

Funny how different we all work...

Usually I have the song zinging around in my head first... after all thats the reason I want to play it... as I am both lucky and cursed in the way that I can reproduce melodies quite good and my head is a jukebox at the best of times that part is easy...

Then I find the chords... then I transpose the song until I feel that my inept playing suits the chords and the whole thing suits my vocal range...

But from then on lyrics and melody rule supreme. I once tried jamming with a friend of mine... he would ask me: "How many beats am I supposed to play C"... and I could only answer "How the f*** should I know... until you have to play someting else".

So in the end it's singing and adding chords then. Later both will change. Delete a flourish here, add another one there, get rid of a chord I don't need, maybe change some, add some...

After all, I (but that is just MHO) don't want to copy but to create.

Cheers,

Tom

Hey again...

after some really nice encouragement I found the song online (at least I hope so, as it says "only available in the US").

So if anyone if you nice people has nothing better to do (or has something better to do and still helps me out) and finds the chords, I'd be more than happy.

And if that someone ever comes over to germany, I'd be more than happy to pay the kindness back with some beer or some home made lasagna...

Actual chords via PM of course as even if I want the song (along with some others, but one bit at a time) really badly, it's not worth jeopardising chordie...

Ah... I almost forgot the link...
