In days of old on the day after Christmas the church poor box or collection box would be opened and the contents distributed to the poor hence the term "Boxing Day"

Re: So, the world ends on Friday? (14 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
It is all a matter of interpretation, The Mayan's did not predict the end of the world but the end of time as we know it. Haven't got a clue what it really means they were far to clever for my small brain. One translation says that the time change means a change for the good in the world and that we all will become more understanding and tolerant of each other and there will be more peace and harmony in the world. I dont know about anyone else but I like this idea o lot more than the doom and gloom prophetsy. It can all start with one person.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas, peace and love to all.

Saw Coldplay last night in Coventry. What a show!! Proberbly the best concert I have been to in twenty years. What with the free interactive wrist lights, fireworks, confetti cannons and numurous oversized beach balls flying about and great, great music it made for one big sing along party.Came home completely knackered and with no voice left but a warm feeling inside.

Caught Ryan Adams in Nottingham (England) last Thursday. It is the third time I have seen him. He was his usual self, not much inter action with the audiance, but what a voice. He sounded sublime. I lost track of time I think he played nearly all of his latest album "Ashes and Fire" along with a host of his classics. A thouroughly great evening.
Then on Saturday I went along to Leamington Spa and saw a young blues man by the name of "Oly Brown". Wow! It was a small venue and it was a spur of the moment thing to go but I was so glad i did. He plays ands sings way beyond his young age, I think he is 20years old. He was on stage with a drummer, Wayne Colcote and a bass player, who I'm sorry I didnt catch his name and they were so tight. A great evening and fully recomend you look this guy up, Oly Brown will be very big in the near future.
Who have you seen lately?

Hi Zurf
I have been following your thread with interest. As a fellow long time sufferer of trying to loose weight, am now pushing 50 and it just gets harder and harder. I can sympathise with your predicament.
Everyone has given you sound advice. What I will say may sound a bit bonkers.
Try cutting down on the exercise. You seem to have been doing extremely well and are very focussed, which is a good thing. But your body has adjusted to accept the hard work you put in and copes very well with it. You need to throw it a curve ball, as you call it across the pond. By cutting down or even stopping the exercise for a few days your body will still be in high energy need mode and as long as you cut down a bit on your food intake, you will be surprised at how many calories you will burn doing nothing. After a few days start execiseing again and see if it makes a diference. Repeat when needed.
Some other quick points, try not to be too harsh on yourself you have done brilliantly up to now. Always be possitive, the fact you havent lost many pounds recently is so insignificant to the fantastic achievement of NOT GAINING any.
Cut down on your water drinking try just drinking when you feel thirsty.
And I agree with you on the pizza front you cant stop until the box is empty.
Good luck and keep on it

Re: Keep splitting finger .. (25 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi Deb
I too can recomend "Skinsheild"as a short term remedy. I had a cut down my index finger I use to barre with and couldn't play. I was recomended skinshield and although it didn't stop all the pain it did allow me to keep playing. As Graig23 says it bloody stings when you first put it on.
Another thing, if it is the very tip of your finger try growing your finger nail a bit longer for a bit more protection. In the mean time glue on a false one and shape to you desired shape and length. I don't use a pick but use my index finger nail which I loveingly grow and shape. I use to think I was a bit weired cause I would use nail glue and all sorts to protect it and have even used false nails when I have brocken it but I saw a video of James Taylor the other day talking about nail care and stuff and he doese the same sort of thing.
Anyway good luck hope you sort it soon

Who am I kidding Toots??
Your right my party animal days are behind me in truth. I reckon I will have a couple of beers strum a few chords and keep my wife awake with my terrible snorring which I get when I drink beer.
Anyway guitarist dont get old they are like the instuments they play they mellow with age and their tone gets better and better. Quality not quantity and your right a couple of beers seems to open the old song book in your head.
All the best

Re: New to the game - Question? (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi Goonerandy,
one of the things I do to get the strum patern is to play along to the song on my i-pod with one earphone in. It a bit like Al said really. The more you play along the more you will get it.
Don't be afraid to try any chorde, barre or open the more you try the easier it gets. Always be possitive as well ,I have in the past told myself I couldn't play a certain chorde and it has taken me an age to master it. Remember "little steps". Good luck on your journey.

Topic: famous encounters (20 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Have you ever met someone or encountered someome famous but at the time you didnt realise who they were?
This is my tale.
Back in the mid seventies (circa75-76) when hair was long and trousers wide. I use to do schoolboy motor-cross with my brother. I was 13 years old and my brother Richard a couple of years younger.
Every Sunday our Mum and Dad would take us to organised races and we would race our 80cc motor bikes that our Dad had made out of old road bikes, around muddy tracks. Mum would bring sandwiches and stuff and we would be out all day in all weather. Happy days.
One of the clubs we raced at was "The Warley Eagles schoolboy moto- cross club" which was based around Cradley Heath in England.
Race day was a very social event and everyone was very friendly and there was always someone comeing around your van for a chat and such.
One of the guys my brother raced against was a kid called Jason. Now Jason had a Dad ( John ) who to us kids was just like any another Dad long dark hair and a big beard. He was always very jolly and would tease all the kids. I remember one sunday he turned up late to the race meeting in a brand new Range Rover 4x4 car with a big red bow on the roof. it was a surprise present for his wifes birthday I think.
At the end of the raceing year we would have our anual prize giving and trophies would be handed out to all the kids who had raced that year. This particular year was no diferent.
We all assembled in this damp and cold village hall which was a long room with a stage at one end. The room was set out with several rows of fold up tables and those metal and plastic stac-o-chairs. On each table was a plate of fish paste sandwiches a bowel of crisps and a large potato cut in half covered in tin foil with cheese and pinapple chunks on cocktail sticks tuck into the spud. The classic seventies party hedgehog. At the far end of the room in front of the stage was a table laiden with trophies.
One by one all of us kids were called to the front to collect our silver ware for the years toil. The thing that I found strange ,at the time was Jasons Dad, John was presenting the trophies to all us kids and poseing for a picture with each and everyone of us.
After, when we had all got our trophies and were sat down fiddling with the leftover, now dry and curled, fish paste sandwiches a man suddenly appeared from behind the curtain on the stage and coughed into a michrophone, which whistle loadly.
"ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls..." he said. At which point the room was overtaken by a hush and all the kids sat up
" we have a very special treat to finish things off tonight.." he continued. There were strange noises comeing from behind the curtain. I hoped it wasn't Father Christmas like the year before as I felt I was getting too old for that sort of thing and anyway it was only the begining of November.
" without anymore ado I give to you ,for one night only..." as the guy was sayining this the curtains on the stage opened. I am sure he said his name but I never heard it. There was such a blanket of sound booming through, the whole room shakeing the tables. Everyone was standing up and cheering so I stood on my chair to try and see what was makeing this enormous noise. The curtains pulled back to reveil a most gigantic drum kit of which the bass was reverberating in my chest, and the man beating the living daylights out of all these drums was....
Jasons Dad !!???
I was gob smacked. Jasons Dad played what seemed ,to a kid of 13,an age and then young Jason got up to have a go. It was quite a surreal moment.
I didnt really Know who Jasons Dad was till several years latter when I got into music.
That lovely guy who beat the life into those drums was the late great " John Bonham"
Now when I tell my kids this story they dont even know who "Led Zepplin" are !!!!
If only you could go back.

Sorry to hear about your ills, how many days of sympathy did you get ? My wife has a very short tollerance to other peoples illness I usually get one or two days max then she thinks I am swinging the lead and if I am off work she dishes out jobs to do around the house. Sometimes it bettr for my health to be ill at work than resting at home!!!!

Thats weird cause I was playing late into the night last night and I had the same sort of thing with my ring finger. It suddenly wasnt mine, and no matter what I couldnt move it I only wanted to lift it but it wouldnt budge, freaky stuff. Sad thing was the strongest thing I had had was coffee. So I went to bed.

It gives me a warm feeling reading this forum. ya just dont feel so alone in your struggles to master the guitar. There seems to be loads of people with the same problems and questions and even better still there is always someone with an answer or a suggestion. Its brill !
I have stubby fat mits and have always struggled with "D" and "A" come to think of it cant think of any I didnt strugle with anyway I learnt to play "D" with a mini barre. No I didnt lock myself away in a hotel room and play till the mini bar was empty. (always drink sensibly kids !)
I also taught myself to play "A" using my ring finger as a mini barre.
Proberbly not for the purests but it works for me

Hi all
have owned a guitar on and off for nearly 30 years never really got further than C D G. Then two years ago,out of the blue ,my wife bought me a new Yamaha FG700 and I havent put it down.
Descovered Chordie a while back and check out the forum durring the day at work. It is a really cool site and everybody seems like a big family. So have decided to post my first message so excuse any mess ups.
so in a nut shell I am 47 years old in December. live in a little village between Coventry and Rugby in England. I play at least an hour every day, find it hard to sleep if I havn't picked up the guitar that day and I am at the stage of mastering barr chords, loving every minute of it!!!!
