my 6 string has a 1 7/8th width nut. I find that with this neck, I can bounce around between my 12 string (1 13/16th) and my banjos without too much string spacing shock. I have a Ovation classical with a 2" nut. A few minutes with it and jumping to another takes some adjustment. It's also the flat fret board on the Ovation that effects me.

I guess the terms practice and/or play for enjoyment melt together when I respond to this thread. I pick up some of my instruments for about 2 hours every morning. I have no real goal in mind, I just like to play in the mornings.

Re: How Much Do You Practice (41 replies, posted in Acoustic)
couple of hours...each morning when I get up. I'll go over a set or a gig song list, switching back and forth from 6 and 12 string and banjo. I'm retired and the only thing close to work I have is the band and the music...keeps me young...keeps my hands limber and pain free.

Re: Skiffle Music (10 replies, posted in Other string instruments)
to me, "skiffle" is a style rather than a kind of music and as such, Chordie is as large a resource for chords and lyrics as can be found. I think most any song, playable and singable with guitar, ukulele or banjo is a candidate.

Re: A Capo that Really Works for a 12-String? (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I use a Thalia. When I got it, it worked just a little bit better than my G7th.
For those who are unaware of Thalia capos, they offer different radius pads for different guitar brands. My Martin uses a 16" pad. Thalia is aware of the problem and has been working with some of us 12 string users and first, they added an extra high pad kit. I was sent one of these and it vastly improved performance but I still needed to squeeze the capo to assist the tension for a clean tone.
This info led to a heavier spring capo. When I received the capo with the heavier spring, I found I had the perfect 12 string capo.
Like some of the others who have responded to this thread, I do not capo a lot, choosing to just play in a different key but there are some songs that need a certain chord, etc.
Because of the correct radius for the specific guitar, increasing the tension does not cause the guitar to sharpen up like other capos do.
I urge anyone who uses a capo on his 12 string to try it but specify 12 string when you order. They are really on to something.
I realize, everyone has their favorite capo and I have owned most every brand for my 12 string over the years. I could always make them work but, it took a lot if fiddling. I set the Thalia and forget it. It is so easy. They are not cheap but they are worth it. I have 2 and I paid full pop for them. I'm not affiliated in any way.

Re: Guild F2512e (6 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I think, before I would buy a laminated F2512e without a hard case, I would go to Reverb and look at the GAD j12-30 solid maple jumbo in a hard case at or close to what you will have into the 2512. You would get an ebony fret board, real Grover mini tuners and dual truss rods as well. These were the first Asian Guilds, sold a few years back. All later Asian Guilds have had some of the nicest features removed. The Asian Westerly models have really been stripped down. The all blond 17" GAD jumbo is the best of the lot, however...and there's one for sale/best offer on Reverb.
They also have a FJ12, 16" jumbo...both with hard cases...both with pick-up
If your heart is set on the 2512e, the TKL jumbo case would fit fine.

Re: transition to 12 string (20 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have a 25.5" scale jumbo 12 string. I tune it BEADF#Bwith mediun gauge strings. barr chords are a snap with the softer tension...much easier to fret cleanly. In a jam, if the song is in G...you are playing C chords...song in D, you are playing G chords, song in A, you are playing D chords etc...
the added benefit is that the guitar's tone really growls. The downside is, in a group...transposing on the fly. The capo(always an issue with a 12 string)is not such a problem.
Not for everyone but, it is a lot of fun.

Re: How Often Do You Change Strings (9 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I have used EJ-45's for a long time. I have gone to EJ-46's on my Martin with it's 26+" scale and it is an improvement. I change out the wound strings monthly. We do about a gig a week and my nylon string is my main instrument. I will change the clear nylon strings about 4 times a year.
I am guilty of leaving my 12 string unchanged for 6 months or so. It just depends on their condition.
The nylon harp strings on my banjos are over a year old and show no wear and sound as good as when I first installed them. I do not use a wound string.

I change the wound strings often but leave the 3 nylon for months. I hear no degrading at all...got G, B, E's comin' out my ears.

Re: Classical Guitars And Others (30 replies, posted in Acoustic)
My 12 string has a 25.5" scale. I use D'Addario EJ 39 medium weight strings. (.012-.052). The guitar calls for xlight string gauge so at B tuning, I feel safe.
They are not too floppy and to my right hand, feel close to the tension on my nylon string. Intonation is right on, all the way up.
I tried this tuning on a Martin D12 -20 with it's 24.5" scale without success.
I have a pick guard on my nylon string guitar because the 12 string tends to sharpen my fingernails. Only downside I have found.

Re: Classical Guitars And Others (30 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have both, if by classical guitar, you mean, nylon string guitar. I play anything on my nylon string, crossover. I use my finger nails and they are a little long. My wife hates them and is constantly telling me to cut them down.
I switch from my nylon string guitar to my banjo, to my tenor ukulele with very little adjustment. I also have a 12 string guitar with steel strings which is tuned down to baritone levels. I play all four instruments with my fingernails. All four are as loud I need them to be.
The lower tension on my 12 string (B,E,A,D,F#,B) doesn't wear my nails down and feels very close to my nylon equipped instruments. My banjo is also strung with nylon strings which I make up from harp strings. It is a long neck and regular sets of nylon banjo strings are too short.
I gig these instruments about 4 times a month using a mic rather than onboard pick-ups.
I have owned many true classical guitars over the years but the slightly narrow neck (1 7/8 nut)and 18" fret board radius on my Martin 000c make the switch to my 12 string easier than using a true classical with it's flat fret board and 2" nut width.

Re: Nylon string guitars (12 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
this is an interesting topic with many informed responses. I would just add that "nylon string guitar" covers more than traditional classical guitar. the many fine examples of "cross-over nylon string guitars" are a totally different instruments and lend themselves to lots of different styles of play and would seem to be closer to the steel string feel.
I play a Martin, and a Taylor with a radiused fretboard and a 1 7/8 wide nut and an Ovation with a flat fretboard and 1 7/8 nut. I have owned a few other brands with the same features...cordoba, pono I have also had some very nice classical guitars with a flat fretboard and a 2" nut. the biggest difference in my mind is the radius. I don't use picks but some do. I think it would be easier with the radius.
Also, you are more likely to find an onboard pick-up on a crossover.
I switched easily from my nylon 6 string to my baritone 12 string largely because both have the same(almost) radius and neck width.
I doubt if the author would find a nylon string with the same neck width as his hummingbird but a radius would make the transition easier.
I play all kinds of music on my nylon strings.

Re: 12-string or not (35 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have been playing the guitar and banjo for 50 years. I have had a lot of 12 string guitars in that time. I sell one off, I end up buying another.
My only advise would be, always have a good 6 string,,,never just have a 12 string. If you can afford it, always had both. john

we are a small acoustic group. 4 voices, banjo, 2 guitars. We use the Alto AEX-400...cheap, easy to pack around and works fine for small rooms,50 or less. We have ordered an AEX 900 and will keep the 400 also. We have had zero problems with their stuff
