Topic: Just Popping in To Say Hi---HI! :) Newly Ukulele Convert! :)

I just thought I'd introduce myself--I hope this is appropriate! My name is Kim and I'm a hobby singer--songwriter who miserably failed at trying to self-teach every instrument, including guitar! I really really really needed accompaniment because my goal is to sing live acoustic sets both in the States and in Germany. My first trip to Germany yielded some small music opportunities and I plan to go back in the summer to continue pursuing live acoustic singing gigs.

Well, it was suggested that because I have small, child-like hands that maybe a ukulele would be a good try. Plus, it's more forgiving than other instruments. I definitely needed "forgiving!"

So, about 5 days ago, I purchased my first ukulele and have already played and video recorded my first cover song, You Are My Sunshine AND two original songs (one silly; one serious), The Emoticon Song and Fall Down.  To say that I'm addicted is an understatement!  smile smile  I haven't been able to put it down. I'm a wimp so my fingers hurt but I don't care!

Anyway--sorry to gush but I'm a Ukulele Convert and am looking forward to spreading the good news of ukuleles as far as I can!!  If anyone knows of any face-to-face communities and/or online communities from Germany (Aachen area) and/or Connecticut--East Coast, would love to join them!

Hope to chat with some of you soon!

It is totally appropriate. You'll find a friendly bunch here. Welcome to the forum!

I have played around with the uke. Fun instrument. You might also consider checking out the mandolin.

Are your videos on YT yet?

Hi Kim and welcome,

Although I am primarily a guitarist I do possess, teach and play 3 ukuleles (two baritone and one tenor). The uke is a fun instrument and I do play in a ukulele band so I am looking forward to seeing/hearing some recordings from you.

You're in the right place!  Welcome to the Chordie forums, Kim! There's not a lot of gals around here, but don't let that stop you (I don't!).  Jump right in and check out some posts and start commenting away!  The chordie forum members are some of the most kind people you'll meet anywhere.

A lot of the folks here play Uke, not just guitar.  That's something I'd like to try at some point, but with three people in the house that currently play guitar it can get expensive at times thinking about adding another new instrument!  smile  Do you play tenor or baritone?  As others suggested, we love to share and hear in here!

Glad you joined us, Kim ... hope you'll join us for discussion regularly. I have the opposite problem with hand size, and have never been able to manage a uke, mandolin, fiddle, or anything like that. I tried a uke once, and even using the very point of my finger on one string, it pretty much muted the strings on either side. Glad some one can play them, 'cuz they have a uniquely warm voice.

Hi Baldguitardude! Thanks so much for the encouragement.  I'm finding wherever I go--the ukulele community seems to be all for one and one for all--I love that!! Yep--they are posted but I don't want to spam anything so let me know if there's an appropriate way to share--if not--no big deal.  Just excited--that's all!! Thanks again! smile

Hi Roger--thank you so much for the welcome! I read a quote a few days ago that the ukulele is the only instrument that makes people smile before it even gets played.  I LOVED that quote--hahaaha!! The guy who sold me my Luna Ukulele is in a jam band--and was TERRIFIC!  I look forward to hearing more.  I've also checked out the UkeLadies out of Portland--they are GREAT.  Uke jam bands rock!! smile

Howdy!! Love to see other gals around--for sure!! I was just talking about the UkeLadies out of Portland!! I do a bit of hobby collaborating online and I'm finding a lot of male centric---nothing wrong with that, of course--however, it's nice to chat with a gal every now and then! Thank you for the warm welcome--I always look up to guitarists because that is my biggest failure yet! I tried and tried and tried and just could not get through chord changes.... however, I find the ukulele to be much more forgiving for my small hands and slow brain.  I am a mom of 3 so I definitely understand "expense" as well.  I have 2 classically trained pianist in the house and between lessons and tuning---everything else gets put on the back shelf!! smile  Thanks for the warm welcome! smile

Hi Zurf--thank you so much!  I will--I like to chat! ha!  Also, I just realized that the "report" button and the "quote" button are so close together that I almost "reported" you--hahaa! Sorry about that if I accidentally hit that in my haste! smile

Hiii!! Thanks for the welcome---yes! Would love to join in discussion for sure.  I don't have much to offer right now but hope to learn, grow and improve--that's my goal right now.  I WISH my hands were bigger!!   I'm Asian so they're better at tying shoe laces than trying to stretch for chords!! smile smile

Re: Just Popping in To Say Hi---HI! :) Newly Ukulele Convert! :)

Hi All, I added my sites to the 'signature' option but here are the YouTube Videos of me playing.  I"m trying to document for others--particularly those who have not grown up around instruments or may have failed (like me) my progress in hopes to encourage others.  If I am posting these in the wrong area--please just let me know and I pull them down when I'm back on here!  I'll also be sure to check out the other areas as well----AND the mandolin! smile  Just a warning that all of these are poorly recorded, poorly edited and poorly played!! hahaaha, so I don't hurt anyone's ears! smile

First video playing the cover song: You Are My Sunshine after owning the ukulele for 12 hours   --------->     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI-MJmPiC5Q

Second video playing an original song I wrote, The Emoticon Song after owning for 2 days --------->     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj_zoCchx9M

Third video playing another original song I wrote, Fall Down after owning for 5 days ----------->     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRh4qNHg24s

LOL.  Go ahead and report me.  I'm one of the moderators for this section, so the report will come to me.  I'd tell me that I want me to settle down and that I don't want to see me acting up like that again.  Then I'd slap my wrist.  I probably deserve it for something anyway.

Wowser!!!  Reported yourself huh?  That'll get you noticed for sure..... not that we make a habit of ignoring new folks.  Welcome aboard the most friendly forum in music!!

You mentioned the Portland Ukegals?  am I making acquaintance with another Northwest Chordian? (your profile does not list a location, and it need not be specific) There is another thread here in the chat corner where UJB is plotting folks on a global map, you might add yourself to the list.

Anyway just wanted to add my Welcome to the group.....

Hi Doug, thanks so much for the welcome!  Nope--on the East coast! smile Sorry about that--I'll go in and change my profile location.  I guess I completely bypassed that.  And I definitely will add myself on the global map.  I'll have to add two places---East Coast (Connecticut) and Germany (for part of the summer!  Aachen) !!! smile

However, I DO hope to get out to Portland at one point (I have a close friend who owns a chocolate//coffee company in Portland) and if so, I'll definitely let you know--PLUS, I really wanna see the UkeLadies! smile
