Topic: Song! Wild Wings. Words/ Music. Helena Donovan 07.

This song came about while in Croatia last week. Where i was staying is
up a mountain. One night late i sat at the pool on my own which has low
underlighting.   But the best lights were the stars.  i felt i could touch them.
All kinds of insects were flying about. This particular Moth which was quite big, delighted me for quite some time. Then the inevitable happened. My heart
hammered as i tried to take her/him out with the pool net. But i was to late.

Wild WingsHelena Donovan, 2007

[G] I watched you

Dancing with[C] delight

[G]In shimmering shining

Soft pool [D]light.

[G] Happy moves to and[C] fro

[G]On gossamer [D] wings

Balance and [G] style

[G] Guided over blue pool [C] water

[G] Attracted by lights [D] glow

[G]full of cosmic moves

[C] Unknown [D]danger down [G] below.

Chorus.

[C] Soft [D] landing failed on [G] water.

[C] Wings [D] fluttered and [G] flailed

[C]Your courage to [D] survive

[G]Your dance was over [Em].now

[C] And So [D] was [G] mine.

[G] I watched you struggle

[C] To far from my reach

[G] Memories of my own [D7] life.

And all that it can [G] teach.

[C] I wondered did you [D7] cry.

As did [G] I

As did [D] I

As did [G] I.

Hi Helena,

Lovely song and I must admit I too try to rescue the smallest of creatures that get into difficulty, unfortunately with limited sucess. Well done,

Thank you,

Lovely song, Old Doll.  Reminds of once when I was hiking and resting along a stream.  I was watching a butterfly fluttering above the water.  My reverie came to an abrupt end as a dragonfly swooped down and grabbed the butterfly for lunch - nature is food chain.  James

Ah Old Doll, once again you've written a fine set of lyrycs that sound like poetry.... very peaceful easy kind of feeling to it. Make a nice fingerpicking piece i think.

Nice playable song. I enjoyed making the chords fit the lyrics.
Thanks.

Nice song Old Doll! You are a master of words and poetic cadence. I had a friend in high school who once ate a moth.(really) He said it definitely did not taste like chicken. Sorry to bring this up but it was the first thing that came to mind while reading your work. I learned many interesting facts regarding moths from this article;

Helena,
Your poetry is a beautiful place.
You make us remember.
Some things forgotten by time, others forgotten by choice, but all forgotten.
You have the ability to make us sit back and think.

If you're not happy with what you have...
Then you'll never be happy with what you get...

Re: Song! Wild Wings. Words/ Music. Helena Donovan 07.

Thank you all for your kind words.
They are "Greatly appreciated"
Southpaw41l!
I have just spent the last hour reading your link. FANTASTIC" I learned something i often thought about to do with moths and light.

Attraction to light

Time exposure at floodlight showing moth flight pathsMoths frequently appear to circle artificial lights. One hypothesis advanced to explain this behavior is that moths use a technique of celestial navigation called transverse orientation. By maintaining a constant angular relationship to a bright celestial light, such as the Moon, they can fly in a straight line. Celestial objects are so far away, that even after travelling great distances, the change in angle between the moth and the light source is negligible; further, the moon will always be in the upper part of the visual field or on the horizon. Human light sources have not existed for long enough to affect the evolution of moth navigation systems. When a moth encounters a much closer artificial light and uses it for navigation, the angle changes noticeably after only a short distance, in addition to often being below the horizon. The moth instinctively attempts to correct by turning toward the light, causing airborne moths to come plummeting downwards, and - at close range - which results in a spiral flight path that gets closer and closer to the light source. [1]

I love those 2 words "Celestial Navigation" I will be even more attracted now
as i understand more.

Daddy cool,
I wish i could say im always so kind! When im fishing the midges sometimes
drive me nuts. Believe me a "Guppy Spray" would be in order! " without the flame of course! tehe.
Isnt this site the best! Wonderful gems every day in my post!

I Love you all for your own "Celestial Navigation" and thank God for you to..
