Topic: Sheet music

I am so annoyed with my guitar teacher. He's told me I haven't got the skills in reading sheet music. He said I'm an acceptional player when I learn stuff off of CHORDIE. aaarrrrghhh!!! That's guitar teachers for you......

Who agrees?

Re: Sheet music

samdrix-good day! i agree you should learn to read sheet music enough to know what key it's in-ateast. i am not saying to take a crash course on it but learn it as time goes by-you will be glad-real glad you did.

Re: Sheet music

you prolly will need the experience sometime in your life, and as harmony said, youll thank yourself you learned. altho i agree standard music notation doesnt do you a damn bit o' good when your playing guitar. who wants to look at a fretboard map to find a note?

Hi Samdrix, I'm a beginner, too. I totally agree! I would go with your strengths. If you're having success learning stuff off of Chordie, why would you want to stop?!

Re: Sheet music

Sheet music is always something that really dents my confidence. I'm the same as you and do quite well with chordie or even transcribing by ear but sheet music knocks the brown stuff out of me.

I can only agree with everyone else that, sure it will be handy, but let's have some fun and have a wee look at sheet music when we feel like it. It's not something that's going to be quick or easy.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Sheet music

while i dont play guitar from sheet music i think its important to learn how to read music. if you play any other kind of instument like a trumpet or sax your gonna need to know how to read musical notation. it will also help your guitar playing

Re: Sheet music

Hi

just like to say that even though i dont read sheet music, i do have a basic understanding of the theory behind it like timing and note lengths and such, i do hope to get better because i cant play by ear and i dont want to rely on Tab too much like some guitarists i know. Anyway, what im saying is, don't stress over what your teacher says, i don't have a teacher and it hasn't done me any harm.

Re: Sheet music

in addition to what i said earlier reading sheet music will help greatly if you sing with others

Re: Sheet music

Im a music major just learning guitar, but I also know how to read music. Dont let your teacher discourage you, will it is good to know how to read music in this day and age its not nessacary. Just keep doing what works for you and tell your teacher to lay off!
