Topic: Death to FENDER

I can't stand Fender guitars!!!! I picked up my friends Strat and it felt like I was holding a toy. Sure the action was decent but it had very little ressonance. Honestly I had to play around so much with the reverb on his amp that I hardly wanted to play the thing. It sounded so thin. Fender makessuch a good bass (Fender Jazz Bass), that I couldn't believe how much this sucked. Many a great guitarist play exclusivly Fenders and I don't know how they get such a great sound but I will stick to a Les Paul through a Fender Bassman.

"Nobody paints by ear so why would I play guitar by sight?" hmm

Re: Death to FENDER

Dear Fender (guitar) Hater,

I do understand what you are saying but offer this...

Playing on different guitars, amps, effects only can expand yor creative mind...

Les Pauls thru Bassmans are so limited. Don't ilmit yourself to just one or two tones..

Open up man............... Create... ahhhhhh don't ya feel better already???

Re: Death to FENDER

I never got so far as to play with the SOUND.... I can't stand where they put the knobs on those things. Constantly hitting them w/ my right hand. They seem so much shorter, too ( the neck ). Nice lookin guitars,, I just don't like em. Guess I was just born a Gibson fan.

Re: Death to FENDER

Ouch man. I don't think fenders suck. I just don't really know my way around them yet. I don't think I suck that bad, unless i'm trying to play a fender.

Re: Death to FENDER

I have 2 fender strats, 2 fender telecasters, a gibson les paul, an epiphone emperor and I love them all. Sometimes i love one more than the others - it depends on my mood and what the music is i am playing. I love guitars.

Best wishes to you all.

Re: Death to FENDER

I don't see how you can indict the entire line of Fender based on one experience with a friend's guitar. Fender makes some of the very best guitars and has also made some of the worst (some of the import models)... I think that about Gibson too! If a Gibson LP played through a Bassman is your sound and set-up then that's what you need. There is a lot of difference between the Strat and LP and most people will have a preference of one over the other... I've been blessed and fortunate enough to start a collection of "user" guitars and have several Strats, a Telly, LP Classic, Wolfgang, and several others. Probably my favorite is a hotrodded Mexican Made Fender Strat...for playing just about everything from SRV stuff to contempory Christian...

Middleaged Redneck sorta guy who refuses to grow up...passion for music, especially Southern Rock but like bout everything cept Gangsta/Hip Hop. Collect guitars, mandolins, and love to ride Harleys.

The ressonance you speak of is from the type and weight of the wood that the two respective guitars are made of. If you had a strat with a mahogany back and maple top you would have gotten a very similar tone (depending on the weight). The strat was probley made of ash or alder which are more high sounding versus the warmth sound of mahogany and is lighter in weight.

The single coil pickups versus the humbuckers also added to the lack of sound you are use too. With that said with experience you'll learn tonal differences and as you said many great guitarst play them. Everyone has different taste.

The story goes there were 2 bulls on a hill 1 old and the other young and they were looking at all the cows. The young bull said to the old bull lets run down the hill and make love to one of the cow's. The old bull replied let's walk down and make love to all of them.

Why just choose one guitar and one style.

Bootlegger.

Bootlegger guitars.

Re: Death to FENDER

My friend gave me pretty much the same advice as you guys. He said a person who has played solely LP almost has to learn to play something els. We are trading guitars for a while since he hasn't played a les for quite some time and we'll see if I can get a feel for it cause I really don't want to keep myself in a box like that. btw my guitar idol Buddy Guy plays strat.

Re: Death to FENDER

I have to agree with the starter, but it does depend a lot on the wood. I have a Samick in the model of a strat and it sounds ok for a starter, but what i really want is a Gibson SG, specially with a custom paint job.

Have you ever thought of a world with no hypothetical situations??

Re: Death to FENDER

I have 2 fender's, I like them a lot, but my favourite guitars are PRS (Paul Reed Smith). They do have a "splendid" serie, s= single coil and h= humbucker.

They made those guitars, except for one, only erom 1990 till 1992.

I have all cominations of the coils.

s-s-s a real attack on fenders, and everybody who hear this huitar in action, tells me that this PRS is sounding a lot better than a fender strat. I also have s-s-h and an h-s-h configuration. These guitars are amazing, the sound, the way you can play on it, fast...

But since PRS started only in 1985, they were put on the market too early. Concerning FENDER Stratocaster: In the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies, you had two kind of fenders: stratocaster and telecaster, I don't mention jaguar and a few other models. The only thing you could change was the color. Now it is IMPOSSIBLE to cghoose a fender stratocaster, you have:

- squier from korea, I think, and real cheap.

- mexican strats (don't know if they are better)

- US strats, highway for instance is good and cheap, but a lot of strats are better but more expensive. It is in my opinion impossible to find a strat, because there are to many strats: reissues, custom shops, relics. I am glad that I have a 1964 original strat, I can sell this one for around 20.000$, but more my PRS single coil sounds better. I am sure that there are still a few "super fenders" but THE problem is there are too much strats. It is and I mean it a very good guitar, but it is easier to choose a gibson: a lot less models

Re: Death to FENDER

seeing as you even admitted that tons of great guitarists make fantastic sounds out of fenders maybe your problem is not so much the guitar, but the person playing it.

As I said I gave it a truer trying. I ended up playing some pretty decent blues licks on it. It took a while to get to know the guitar but I think I understand about having to learn to play a strat. I'll probably never be a Fender guy, but I'm deffinatly a bit more open minded than when I posted my origional rant.

Re: Death to FENDER

I agree, there are other guitars out there…the same goes for Gibson just go and try something different .I have a Gordon – Smith graduate 60 hand made in the UK it sounds fantastic and half the price of a Gibson and its got the sound I like….also have a G&L S500 swamp ash now that blows the best stratt I have ever tried….people need to take the blinkers off and try a guitar and listen not just look

Cheers

Re: Death to FENDER

Play a fender strat through a vox amp and a vox cooltron pedal, and then we'll see what u think.

Re: Death to FENDER

In a previous post I mentioned that I own both Fenders and Gibsons... Both companies have made lemons....it happens...I've played Custom Shop models from both Fender and Gibson that just out right sucked. Case in point...the Highway 1 Strat I now play is a jewel but the one I owned previously sucked big time( CBS era crap!) Truth is each guitar is different(even custom shop models)... my next purchase will be a PRS but you better believe I will try several before deciding which one goes home.

Re: Death to FENDER

my first guitar was a strat back in 1973 brand new ( $240.00 ) my life savings at the time. (sure wish I still had that one) anyway different strats and even one tele came and went over the years, until I deceided I wanted a gretch. (the strange thing is I never even played one before, I just love the way they looked)
When I told the salesman at the guitarstore what I wanted he asked me if I was a jazz player, when I told him I was moreso into the blues he said try this. he placed a gibson lucille in my hands and said try this. Well ......guess what.....thats right I am a gibson player now, but at times I do miss that fender feel.
bottom line I beleive they both have their place

what a long strange trip it's been
