Topic: Epiphone Casino

Any input on the Epiphone Casino guitar? I think it's the one Dwight Yoakam uses a lot. I'm thinking about up grading from the Ibanez I'm useing, it's a little to small for my hands.

Re: Epiphone Casino

Hi Butch,

Yeah had one in my hands for a short while.  Just a matter of personal preference though, felt a bit light and neck heavy.  Pretty good tone, but not that Jazzy depth that we thought it should have.  Sent it back and replaced it with a Dot which IMHO was closer to the tone of the Emperor.... which makes sense as it is also semi-hollow.  The Casino is a fully hollow bodied instrument and didn't sustain as well as the through body models Epi makes.  The Casino is a bit deeper in body as well, put out a bit more bass, but nothing that couldn't be duplicated with amp settings.

All three of the models I mention here are fairly large body guitars and the necks are very similar in width and profile, comfortable and fast.  I'm 6 foot and medium weight, no problem getting around the larger bodies.  Do like the balance of a neck through, it stays in the angle you strap it to you without feeling like you have to hold the thing up all the time.

Re: Epiphone Casino

Would heavier strings help? I usually use med strings. And what is a DOT, I've seen it here several times? I never heard of IHMO, is that like an HMO!? LOL on that one

Re: Epiphone Casino

The Dot is Epiphone's ES-335 clone.  They can be had new for about $300, and sound fantastic.

Re: Epiphone Casino

I own a Dot and they are nice to play.....mine's a studio so no flash. It's acheap way to get a decent hollow body. The casinos are OK but kind of pricey

Re: Epiphone Casino

LOVE MY DOT!

Re: Epiphone Casino

Thanks all. I think what I'm looking for is a guitar that plays like an acoustic, but, that I can plug in and play like an electric!! Is there such an animal!!!

Re: Epiphone Casino

Hi Butch again,

Are you specifically looking for something that sounds good un-plugged?  In which case you might be better off shopping for an Acoustic/Electric.  The Epi Casino was a nice hollow guitar, but still didn't have much projection without the pickups in the circuit.

Once in awhile you can come across an older Archtop with pickups that have great tone without an amp.  Played one recently that had been made in the late 40s that had great tone (archtop that is) didn't have pickups installed. But one of the loudest Acoustic guitars I've ever heard.... and a huge body!  Truly one of the great Jazz/Blues instruments.

Good Hunting!

Re: Epiphone Casino

I think we are doing Butch a disservice here.  Lets get him set up right.

Butch, the proper solution to your many desires isn't one guitar that does lots of things, it's *lots of guitars.*

Some day, you will understand this, embrace the GAS, and be a better man for it.   smile

Re: Epiphone Casino

As an older guy I wish to simplify my guitar collection. I gave away my Yamaha 12 string because I seldom used it and my friend needed one.
I am left with a Yamaha FG 350W acoustic and my Gibson 330 for electric and a Martin Backpacker for a travel guitar.

I agree! Butch needs to catch the GAS (Guitar Aquisition Syndrome) that affects so many of us! I agree that I love the sound of a good acoustic guitar but that's best achieved by a quality deep bodied acoustic. Also love the convenience of being able to amplify and get that acoustic tone but that seems best (arguably of course!) by a thinner body with good electronics.

Also a Telecaster sounds like a Telly, Stratocaster sounds like a Strat, and a Les Paul is .... a Les Paul... then comes all the quality copies, customs, crossovers, etc...  and suddenly thousands of dollars, a room full of guitars hanging on the wall, and hopefully an agreeable spouse. Then toss in a few mandolins, a banjo or two, and it's never ending!

Middleaged Redneck sorta guy who refuses to grow up...passion for music, especially Southern Rock but like bout everything cept Gangsta/Hip Hop. Collect guitars, mandolins, and love to ride Harleys.

Brutal....knowlingly passing along the GAS disease....Well either way he'd get it sooner or later at least now he'll know what it's called

Re: Epiphone Casino

LOL thanks guys there is a really beat-up Strat at the local guitar shop for cheep and maybe I can get that Guild there too. THat means another keyboard has to go and i'll only be left w/ the Roland.

No need to get rid of the keyboard - Think outside the box! Under a bed, the trunk of your car, tucked away in the attic.. there are all sorts of places to hide your obsession. Keep a guitar or 2 at each of your cousins, brothers and friends places. Switch 'em out on occasion and the wife will never know. No use fighting it, just feed it. Where there is a will there is a way.

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

Re: Epiphone Casino

LOL thanks topdown, but if I gave any of my cousins a guitar they'd turn them into fishing poles or burn them for firewood!!!
