like cytania said technically the bottom string should probably be marked with an 'x', but that means you hit those three strings at once. Whenever they line up, you hit them all. Usually if the string isn't marked with a 0, meaning open, then you assume you don't play it.

naw I was just talkin', not in an upset way, just gettin' in on the conversation. It is an interesting study, maybe the key is to balance it out. Enjoy heavy music sometimes but take a break now and then...
I've always heard that people who know music are better at math, but both me and my brother failed math last year, but can comprehend timing and musical progressions and patterns without any trouble....
'Course I play be ear alot more than by music.

Re: is a electric guitar player in danger? (31 replies, posted in Electric)
...oooookay, people are getting paid to play rock music for lab mice now?? Listen, most so called 'metal heads' who end up being damaged in any way will deterioate because of drug and alcohol intake not because the music hypnotized them. Teens that turn to extremely heavy music are alot of times already very angry, the music just works them up some.
I know a guy listens to the death metal, very laid back, kind of nerdy, built his own computer. I know a guy who loves classical music. He's on a downward spiral of self destruction as we speak and he couldn't find his way out of a maze in 30 years, much less seconds.
Animals react badly to loud noise because they can't comprehend the meaning or even concept of 'music'. When I play my country music loudly I enjoy the song, but my hamster has a fit. Classical, even when played loudly, is very smooth and well, boring I think but thats beside the point, so the animals wouldn't be as afraid. Rock music when played loudly, while it might make people want to jump up and head bang, scares animals because they don't understand 'music' there's just something very loud in thier ear and thier scared. Scare the crap out of an animal every minute of every day for very long and they're gonna be a little crazy.
SO, I think when people can take music and just enjoy it for the music's sake, it won't hurt anybody. I do think every once in a while you need a good simple song to keep you from getting depressed, and I'm not saying constant heavy rock music is good for you, but I don't think its gonna magically make anybody wither and die on thier sofa. The PERSON can make decisions to listen without going out and doing everything they sing about and be O.K.

I'm absolutely against murdering babies, there are other options.....
But lets don't turn this into a debte board about abortion, there's a song here to be commented on and its not fair to the writer. Ktsmith, this is one of my favorite passages of scripture, and as the psalms were actually originally intended to be recited in the Temple as a song, I think this is very appropriate. I've heard several psalms actually, that were sung to music during church services and it was very pretty. A nice chord progression also, the take on it being about abortion is interesting, lets hope people don't use this thread to argue over it though.
Take it easy,

Welcome to the forum first of all James ![]()
Now: this is a good song, love the idea. I think to make the rythym match up you might have to trim down a word or two, but then maybe the tune you're playing fits just right. I get the feeling that maybe you're writing about your father? Remember that its never your fault that a parent (or whoever it may be) doesn't approve of your, they're the ones who wouldn't step up to the plate and do thier job as parent (or friend, etc.). Just keep playing and writing because you enjoy it, I think you have alot of potential- this from a kid who had a deadbeat parent herself.
Anyway I'm gonna shut up now, really like the gist of this song. There's lots of available help here, so if you need something just holler

That woman is so full of herself it makes me sick!

Re: where is the topic about critics? (7 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Well I'll go on the record as saying I don't mind criticism (to myself or anybody else), as long as its given in a respectful way. Even if anybody just doesn't like it I don't mind a 'hey hate to be the one to tell you but you kind of bombed on this one', or 'you could do alot better'. What does offend me is pointless 'you suck!'s and insults, because it doesn't help anybody get better, it just tears people down. Now if somebody's comin' on with something just terrible, (haven't really seen anything that bad on here yet) I think it would be appropriate to maybe hint that song writing's not thier niche, maybe in a nice way like, 'I like your musical abilities better than your lyrycs...' I think the key would be 'constructive' criticism...
Personally I appreciate criticism, positive and negative, particularly from people like Old Doll and James, and jas, and others who I know really want to help.
Anyway thats my two cents, let's keep it nice and respectful folks ![]()

Re: "Talking About Golf" (17 replies, posted in Songwriting)
James,
This is great. When I moved to the city last year, I was surprised to see all the hype about golf, a game that has never appealed to me in the slightest. By the time I made it out of that school year I had developed a firm belief that golf was sadistic and insane, sucking the life out of people even MY age and filling thier already hollow souls with business like expressions and yuppyish boredom. Whatever happened to the jocks playing football???
I really don't see the appeal at all, you hit a ball, you watch it land, then you go hit it again. there's no teamwork, no competition, no loud and crazy fans cheering in the stands and eating cheap pickles and hot dogs! I think its main purpose is to secure business deals, but its strange to me to be sitting in a group of people my age without bands, movies, 'who's hot', or cars, or anything usual coming up, just boring golf golf golf golf..... blech!
Anyway great little song,
LR

Re: Nekkid- a ridiculous little song about well, being naked (6 replies, posted in Songwriting)
While I was on vacation in vermont (which was a real trip I tell you what but Iwon't get started here), some people took us kayaking on what they called a 'lake' (but compared to Rayburn and Toledo, the lakes I lived next to at the time, they were more of a largeish pond), to look at an endangered species of bird called a 'loon'. As the day progressed we learned that the beach across the way was a nudist camp, which explained why our host kept peeping so intently through his binoculars and saying 'look at them loons!'....
I also nearly knocked out one of the real loons with an oar, which upset our new friends quite a bit. Apparently Loons are always terrified to come that close to humans, and I'm sure he never will again.
Anyway thanks for the comments, maybe I'll add some more verses one of these days,
LR

Re: MUSIC, SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY (4 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
You can major in music in college, a friend of mine's been taking I think 3 years now. They teach music theory, reading sheet music, some musical history I think. Its mostly geared towards a classical style, but music theory can help anybody.
While in High-school you can take band, but I found it very unhelpfu because everywhere I've ever taken it didn't take music very seriously, and you learned almost nothing. I had one good band instructor one year, he taught about timing and half beats, but he quit the next year and band became study hall.....
There are music schools too, some even for specific styles, as far as scholarships go I'm not sure how you would get one for a music major. I know there's a program (something 'for the arts') thats geared towards helping students get art and music schooling....

No I don't neccesarily think that in all cases, I was trying to figger out what YALL were sayin'.... but forget it I'm dropping out of this one.
For the record though, there's alot of difference in voting for a president who you think matches YOUR morals, will take care of YOUR economy, secure YOUR borders (which down here in Texas is something very close to home), etc, and telling him HOW to do it. Just like there's alot of difference in choosing whether or not you like a musician and telling him how he ought to play and sing.
But I'm done. Yall take it easy

I don't like any bands that are just products of the market, look good say the right thing get a cool video and wind up in a teen magazine, that just doesn't appeal to me at all.
Buckcherry is a band I just really don't like. Don't know exactly why, but every time I see them on T.V it makes me want to throw up.... Never was much for Korn either, just couldn't see what the buzz was about....

The song format's easy as pie John, just type [s o n g] (no spaces), {T: TITLE OF YOU SONG GOES HERE}(the T will be lowercase) now write out the song, placing the chord before the word it would be over just like this:
[G]la [D]la [G]la
Then when you're all done type [/s o n g] (only no spaces)....
Like your song by the way
Holler if you need sumthin,
