Mojo

I am in complete agreement that  veterans are neglected.
There are two poems that resonate with me.
the first :

I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A  Soldier

Ten million soldiers to the war have gone,
    Who may never return again.
Ten million mother's hearts must break
For the ones who died in vain.
    Head bowed down in sorrow
    In her lonely years,
I heard a mother murmur thru' her tears:

Chorus

I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and joy.
Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder,
To shoot some other mother's darling boy?
Let nations arbitrate their future troubles,
It's time to lay the sword and gun away.
    There'd be no war today,
    If mothers all would say,
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier."

Verse 2

What victory can cheer a mother's heart,
When she looks at her blighted home?
What victory can bring her back
All she cared to call her own?
    Let each mother answer
    In the years to be,
Remember that my boy belongs to me!

The second is Alfred L. Tennyson's  Charge of the Light Brigade

My favorite verse ......

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

I have 6 bothers - 4 of whom served in the military....
all while my mom was left with a farm, 3 girls and an infant -  ( Me) and  her husband burned to death in an industrial accident.
She never complained, never committed suicide

I grew up in the Viet Nam war era.... it was awful.

One of my best friends in college was a Viet vet.... Left U.S. as a farm boy, came back a deranged druggie
Now .... crazy as a loon , but still a great guy.

When we pay millions of dollars to someone to play golf, baseball , football  or anything else   and then turn around and tell a vet that we're out of money for psych help or to keep vet hospitals going - there is something drastically wrong with society.

War is hell - no doubt about it.... look at the senseless battles where thousands died for a few feet of turf.
It would be best to make a rule that whoever decides to go to war.... their sons and family have to go first.

I make my 8th graders read Johnny Get Your Gun .... when we do WWI.   Very moving story.

As far as Cecil, you could have picked a thousand other examples of pedistilling - like making athletes, celebrities of all kinds,  and Hollywood stars.... seemingly  Gods before our very eyes...........all Bullshit to me..... but Cecil was and is  a social issue that deems notice as well. Dissing that is incorrect, putting it in perspective is a requirement of the reader. I know it does not parallel any human life, but it is still important.
I think you are wrong that no one cares... many of us do in fact care.

With that sdaid  however..... - I am grateful for every veteran that wears  or has worn a uniform.  War is hell, always will be.
Your words are powerful and well intended and I thank you for that.

and now to tie two threads together...

Phil Wrote a poem about spousal abuse ----

I sent a site that includes this fact
The number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 was 6,488. The number of American women who were murdered by current or ex male partners during that time was 11,766. That's nearly double the amount of casualties lost during war.

No telling how many committed suicide and went unreported .....
Freaking life is tough -  it can be cruel......   HOPE everyone on Chordie has a GREAT LIFE  and never has to deal with such stuff !

I liked your song... well done Mojo- never expect anything less from you smile !

Love you all and I hope war some how stops .... bc the next WW will probably be the last ... and I just found out that I am going to be a grandfather to a baby boy in January.

You are one of the best MOJO --- keep 'em coming...

Sorry for your wives ex - he should be incarcerated - as anyone who abuses their spouse.

This site provides amazingly sad statistics.

As a teacher of 37 years, I could tell endless stories that students have confided in me about what was going on in there house. Many a night I have had a knock on my door wit a student seeking refuge.
In 98% of these cases I have personal knowledge of - always drugs or alcohol involved.

Very stirring poem Phill, good to get discussion going.
The facts on this site will blow your mind though !

Graham - Very nicely done.
The solo by John at the end brings it to a whole other level and dimension.
I could see a lot of people with their air guitars jamming with this song.

I really liked it.

I love watching the LLWS - pure competition - with innocence ( except maybe for a few adults)   - but great sportsmanship. The thousands of volunteers that make it happen are incredible.

I have been to Williamsport many times as two of my best friends lived in Hughesville and Loyalsock , both which are right next door.

I hope Red Land does well, but I am actually pulling for the South Carolina team.

Wellllll.........hold on there cowboys - you are not alone........

I played soccer for many years
Collegiate level at East Stroudsburg University ( goalie on my team was Bob Rigby- Cover of Sports Illustrated when drafted by Philadelphia Atoms.  The Coach of the Atoms ( AL Miller lived up the street from me - I dated his daughter for 6 years:0))
Played for Pocono Snow FC , Worthy Brothers FC( out of Philly) and the Delaware Wings in old ASL.  Iwas also selected to play on the National HOF Team out of Oneonta NY ( where the Hall of Fame was located at the tiem)

I have coached soccer at high school since 1976
Been to the NYS Championships 3 times.

I am a soccer junkie as well -  My European Team has been Liverpool.
I got to meet Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler in person last summer.
Beckenbauer - der Kaiser was always one of my favorites.
I was at Meadowlands Stadium ( in 1977 or 78 ) when he , Pele, Chianalia, George Best and so many other great players all played for NY Cosmos - crowd that day was over 78,000.

My Father - played for the Kearney ( NJ) Scots)  for $ 38 a game - my mom told me it was more than he made in a week at his plant ( early 1940's)

It still continues - as today, I was coaching 22 girls ( high school soccer) -- my 35th year at my school - and I still love every second of it.

Sooooooo   TF and Bill - you are not alone  smile

This is a re- make of the song that I had posted before- I changed the lyrics a bit.

It is dedicated to anyone that has that special person that gets them through tough times.
We've all been there, and hopefully we've all had someone we could lean on to get us through.
Here is the link to my version on Soundcloud : https://soundcloud.com/tigljk/lift-me-up-on-angel-wings

Wrong Paul !!! smile

New and the Song On my way to Work are Paul McCartney's = not Paul Simon's .

It is a good song, nice easy listening music - weird lyrics though, I  thought.

Another excellent lyric and arrangement.  It sounded quite " Beatle"ish to me, which is always a sign of excellent music.
Sentiment of the is well established, and the delivered performance was top notch !

Keep'em coming my friend, a pleasure to listen to.

You really need to connect to a music producer - you have a lot of "Texas sized talent " !

Thanks all,  for your comments.
I made some changes - thanks Bill !!

The writing comes relatively easy for me - the playing and singing - well that's a whole other ballgame.
As for the Dentist - apparently the hunter has now become the hunted -- poetic justice.

I wanted to put in a line some where about the defining silence of his roar - but just couldn't find the right line.

I love the forum on chordie..... so much fun and sooooooo many good people  !

Cecil vs. The King of TeethJim Kenyon

.

this is more of a narrative of what happened.  Pretty sad situation  I had a capo on 2 - sing it kinda jazzy blues

.

[Em] It was a warm, clear nighton the [Am] African plain

[Em] A blazing moon and not a [Am]drop of rain

[Em] The wind was blowingfrom the [Am] west to east

[B7] when the king of the beasts met the [C7] king of [Em] teeth.

.

[Em] One always hunted for [Am] food to kill

[Em] The other one hunted for some [Am] kind of thrill

[Em] One had his pride , the other[Am] had none

[B7] One wanted life, not a trophy[C7]for his [Em]son

.

Chorus

[Am]The King of the Beasts, the pride of the pride

[Em] by a coward’s arrow has died

[Am] no good reason,no way to explain

[B7]What happened that night on the [C7]African [Em]plain

.

[Em] the arrow tore his heart [Am] he hadn't a prayer

[Em] This was a fight that was [Am] far from fair

[Em] Unaware lion ,an ass[Am]assin that paid

[B7] death was all around wherepoor[C7] Cecil [B7] laid

.

[Em] The king of teeth said that he [Am] wasn’t aware

[Em]Oxford studied Cecil so[Am] people would care

[Em]never even saw that[Am] tracking collar, yet

[B7] he couldn’t waitto shootcuz he’d [C7] paid his [B7] dollar

.

Chorus

[Am]The King of the Beasts, the prideof the pride

[Em] by a coward’s arrow has died

[Am] no good reason,no way to explain

[B7]What happened that night on the [C7]African [B7]plain

.

[Em] They skinned poor Cecil and [Am] cut off his head

[Em] a new pride leader, his[Am] cubs will be dead

[Em]stars and commoners [Am] are outraged,The

[B7] king of teeth shot a lionrela[C7]tively [B7]caged

.

[Em] he says he’s real sorry, for his[Am] honest mistake

[Em] and feels real bad about [Am]Cecil's fate

[Em] butthe king of teeth [Am]is telling a lie, because

[B7]now he wantsan elephant with[C7]tuskto [B7] die

.

Chorus

[Am]The King of the Beasts, the prideof the pride

[Em] by a coward’s arrow has died

[Am] no good reason,no way to explain

[B7]What happened that night on the [C7]African [B7]plain

.

[Em] So this ends the story of the [Am] King of the Beast

[Em] And how he lost his life to the [Am] king of teeth

[Em] will he get punished,we'll[Am] wait and see, but

[B7]know as a manhe's justa [C7] cavi[Em]ty

[B7] andtheseanimalsneed help from [C7]youand [Em] me.

[B7]theyneed help from [C7]youand [Em]me.

[B7]oh they need help from [C7]youand [Em] me.

That is really, really, really, really good !!!  Beautifully captured moments !!
and I love this line

"I can't strum a note that could compare to this symphony"  so true ......

nature is absolutely amazingly perfect in so many ways.

I was hoping for maybe one more stanza -of you describing what could you felt....  (i.e.  wind blowing on you,
heat of the sun on your face,  cool of the forest, softness of the moss underfoot  etc.....) to accompany the other senses - but I guess that's me being greedy for just a little more of your great work !

you have made mother nature proud in your depiction for sure.

Thanks so much for sharing

Mojo

I do it all the time - i use the notepad on my phone usually to record thoughts that pop in my head --- it seems the easiest for me.

I usually have two or three going - then I forget about them for a while and when searching for something on my computer - they will invariably pop up and I'll go
" hmmm, oh yeah.... I remember that "

another scenario for me is a lyric that i have worked on - but can't find the right chord progression - I get mad -   put it away forget about for a year or so :0 )

I woke up the other night had a great verse and chord progression in my head.... sat on edge of bed - went over it a couple of times...was gonna go downstairs and write it down..... but then said to my self - eh - I 'll do it when i get up - went back to sleep .  You know the outcome probably already -   woke up   "Craft syndrome"  set in ( .... can't remember a freaking thing)  !

I have no idea of words or lyrics - just remember that I had a good one !

smile
