DT my first gig is tomorow at 1pm a house party on the lake my pa was shipped today and it wont get here in time but im going to use a small amp the loop pedal and my acoustic with a mic and keep it simple they like the song 'Edmond Fitzgerald' and Jimmy Bufffet and some Neil Young so I should be ok its only a 1 hr gig and pays 50 bucks plus food and drink but I most likely will book some future gigs from the contacts and its been a while since I was in the saddle so this is a good warmup smile

It really is a sad day not only Michael but Farrah Faucet she died earlier today, I remember seeing Michael when he did "Billy Jean" and did the moon walk I thought he was fantastic and the Thriller album was his best because of his association with Quincy Jones after that he went on a strange trip and I lost interest but he was great no doubt smile

DT I just changed pickups on my bass the rear pickup didn't work when I bought it but I only paid $50 for it and I knew I could fix it or replace the pickup fairly cheap I use a sidewinder and on a regular guitar it only takes less then 10 minutes to change a set of strings, on the bass I loosened them and just let them lay over the rear of the bass as I removed the pick guard and swapped the front to the back the actual time spent removing and reattaching was less then 10 minutes I dont see how they can justify the fee they charged for less then ten minutes of "labor" its not uncommon for any store to charge for something you cant do just like a auto repair or computer repair I was fortunate that I have had to do this on my own because of lack of funds so I learned how wiring works in a guitar its not that hard get a solder gun and there must be some online instructions or schematics for pickup wiring and the next time you can do it yourself or find a more trustworthy dealer smile

The thing I dont undestand is why you had to supply them with a brand new set of strings to begin with? if all they were doing was installing a pickup they could have used the old set to test to see if the pickup worked if you would have asked that question they might have had to come up with the restringing fee charge or at least informed you of the charge even if they were putting the old ones back smile

payjack welcome to Chordie, you may want to start with the basic C scale there are lots of books on basic theory I use Mel Bay I to start my students with it has all the basic information on chords and scale construction also a free program Guitar Alchemest is a great tool just google it up and pick the free program I think you will really enjoy it because it has all the scales and modes plus a thousand ways to make each chord all the way up the neck and down good luck smile

of course! lol it may just catch on there are a lot of loopers looking for a inexpensive way to mount a bass I know I could have spray painted it black along with the mic stand that was scraped up and I also could have put some padding so the back would not get scratched but no one but me is going to see it anyway I thought of making a video of the process but it was to hot to hassle with the equipment (98 degrees at noon) and tons of humidity I am staying in my cool air conditioned flat till later and then go to the lake I had a rehearsal useing my small practice amp and everything worked so when I get my new PA it should sound really nice still waiting for delivery I will be video taping some songs when I get my PA and upload to myspace so let ya know when smile

HARDING STAND? you've even named it...by the way, I've got a little bracket in my shed that could do that job, I'll bring it round.

I was worried about the strength of the mounting so I went to the hardware store and got a single piece of sheet metal that had two holes already drilled I made impressions of the mounting screws on the neck so I knew what size holes would be big enough I have a small table vise so I bent the ends and drilled two holes in the brace and the mic stand and mounted them offset so the bass is at a normal angle I would play it, I wasn't concerned with how it looked in back as its a cheap bass with only one use to add a loop these three photos show the back front and full view of the "HARDING STAND" lol

I think Adobe has a zoom feature where you can increase the size of the font and get a print preview before printing I also have Adobe 9 and have printed out pdf files of Bobby Fishers chess games but if you want larger font this has to be done with the program that comes with the printer or a word processor I use Jarte a free word processor it works the same as note or word pad but it has a spellcheck and you can insert photos or change the color of the font but along with larger font go's more pages cant escape that smile

1 question russ...how are you going to play bass and guitar at the same time?

Russell is the original mutant.  If he can write and play a song meant entirely to show off that he can play the Evil B and I can't, playing a bass and guitar at the same time will be a piece of cake.  I'm guessing something to do with a loop.  Either that or possibly Russell has four hands, which would explain how he gets the Evil B so easily.

Thanks Phill I did have to rewire the pickups on the bass the rear one didn't work so I took the front one and moved it back it was a hassle rewiring because the pots had short wires and I had to improvise I also had to rout out the pickup cavity and pick guard because the mountings were smaller but I used my old utility knife and whittled away and shaved the plastic till it fit so everything is working but I'm still going to get another pickup and mount it closer to the neck so the bass sound comes out more it was a nice project and everything came out OK I have assembled a nice play list and I'm rehearsing it for a gig I booked still waiting for my new PA to be delivered so I can really push the envelope and crank it up right now I'm just useing my little amp with the volume turned down so I dont blow the speaker I figure it will take a month to really get comfortable with my new gear (I hope) the songs are coming along fine I added A Tom Petty song "free falling" and a Harry Chapin song "Cats in the Cradle" to the list which includes "Shooting Star" and "Ricki dont loose that number" and Reeling in the Years" which aught to get the audience going,so many songs keep me busy I haven't had time to compose anything new but as soon as I get a break or when the creative juices start flowing I will get back to my own stuff again smile

I think I will get a small clamp and mount it on the bottom so the bass rests on it and that will take any strain off the small mounting screw I also can loosen the screw and the tripod stand pivots and collapses into a compact unit that fits in a gig bag so I dont have to assemble and disassemble each time, naturally the clamp will be padded so I dont mar the finish but I only paid $50 for the bass and if it looks a little beat up who cares? just adds more "earthyness" and soul to it lol

Thanks Zurf and this posistion is the exact center of gravity so the bass will not dip forward or backward that was the key, I balanced the bass on my finger first to see where the center of gravity was and thats where I mounted it smile

I will be playing some gigs as a single and one of the things I needed was a stand for my bass so I could play it and not have to put a strap on so I checked online for a stand and the only one I could find cost around $100.00 with tax and shipping so the old saying "neccesity is the mother of invention" promted me to come up with a solution and I got to thinking that my old boom stand that was laying in the corner could serve a usefull purpose so this is what I came up with.

This is the back view its mounted to one of the neck bolts and I loosened the tension on the strings before I removed the screw total cost for mount with stand 0 smile

ASCAP sent representatives to any place that had live music and demanded a fee because the band performed cover songs they estimated there fee on how many seats or bar stools and the capacity, most of the bar owners had them escorted to the door refusing to pay this extortion it reminds me of the shakedowns the corrupt officials conducted and still conduct on small businesses in the large cities for liquor licenses or permits, its sad that something as wonderful as music is raked over the coals by unions and lawyers who will some day figure out a way to collect a fee for the air you breathe.

Randy the jury was lienient they only awarded $1.2 million I cant imagine what the collective thinking on this jury was, I can understand a settlement for wrongful death or injury resulting in a person being incapacitated and unable to help themselves but for uploading a few tunes for free and not recieving a profit where is the injury? is it a boo boo that takes $1.2 million to heal? were not talking about a person who is running a bussiness raking in internet cash at the expense of starving artist this is a ordinary housewife with children who most likely uploaded her files to a few friends without her knowledge whatever happened to common sense? justice in this case was not only blind but deaf and dumb.
