Lena, I get the feeling that for you there are few strangers, but merely friends you haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting.  What a delight to have your gentle perspective on the boards.

Cool!

LOL!!!  There's the chance that some of you may have been mildly intoxicated.  They ought to use that for alcohol awareness in high schools.  "Kids, when you drink you may be lead to think you can sing much better than you do.  Listen to this..."

Some days I feel as if I'm from the middle ages.  I'm at least middle aged.

We won't steal your hair, but you'll need a Hawaiian shirt.  I've been thinking of shaving what's left of my hair off.

bsawyers - Take out the double pickup on the neck and replace it with a single coil (still a big soapbox), remove the equalizer and replace with four knobs like on a strat, and make the cast aluminum bridge burnished aluminum rather than black and you have my bass.  Mine is a Magnum 3.  The Magnum 4 have the additional wiring.  The Magnum and Magnum 2 have very different body shapes and stereo pickups!

Heavy is an understatement.  I wear a four inch wide padded leather strap on mine and it still cuts into my shoulder by the end of a set.

On mine, the Ovation neck pickup was missing and there are none available.  Not even the Ovation techs could find any in "the magic box up in the loft".   I had an honest-to-goodness guitar tech replace it with a Bartolini Music-Man dipole pickup.  It sounds great, but unfortunately the collector value of the guitar is lost.  It's just a work-horse instrument now.

Yep.  Happens to me.  I expect that a lot of folks will say it happens with them too.  My mom called them "jags", though I can't say why.  My Mom would say you've been on a banjo jag and are going on a uke jag.  Consistency is over-rated.

Sounds like you had a great time.  I am glad you enjoyed it.  Time will heal your party wounds.

No party wounds here.  It was just a small bottle of bourbon, shared, and we took a long time to handle it.  However, knowing that I had to drive back to my hotel room, I also poured a good bit of my glassful into Topdown's glass, which may explain HIS party wounds.

Thanks to Topdown for the kind words on my playing and singing.  I don't think much of them, but it's pleasing to read that he enjoyed them.  I've been working hard on improving my voice over the past year, with many thanks to Russell Harding who has been very encouraging and made helpful suggestions.

I very much enjoyed playing the songs we both knew together, really enjoyed Topdown's rhythmic style, and greatly enjoyed playing his amazing graphite guitar.

Any point that makes you comfortable.

As Zguitar points out, I do differentiate between playing songs on guitar and playing guitar.  That's MY take and MY opinion.  It does not and should not bind anyone else unless it resonates with them and they adopt the concept for themselves.

So, if you feel comfortable saying you play guitar, then say you play guitar.  You aren't lying.  You aren't claiming to be the best that ever lived.  You're just saying, "Yeah, I know what to do with a guitar in my hands and can bang out a song or seven."  Good enough.

When asked, I usually say I play AT the guitar or play WITH a guitar.  When I will feel confident saying that I play guitar, it will be when I am  more skilled at major, minor, and blues scales and be able to play up or down arpeggios and some useful inversions up to the seventh fret.   That's my test for ME for saying I play the guitar.  Right now, I still feel as if I play songs on guitar.

I just got back from jamming with Topdown.  What a blast.  He let me borrow his graphite guitar, and it is SWEET.  I'm two hours into my last day of vacation and ought to be going to bed, but I'm too jazzed up to do it.  Caffeine has not been my friend.  Either too much or not enough.  Tonight, too much.  Plus all the fun with Topdown.

Anyway, we met up at Topdown's cabin on a lake.  Though tempted, I did not cast a line.  He fed me a great dinner, and then we jammed, jammed, and jammed.  He's pretty slick with the rhythms, I'll tell you what.  Picks them up and does them just fine.  Also, his graphite guitar is finer than fine.  I told him if it ever shows up missing, he knows the first place to look for it is my house.

We traded songs and had a good time.  I feel as if I may have dominated the evening, but it's been a few days since I've played and tonight was the first night since I put my stuff in storage close to a year ago that I've used my full song-book, so I hope he'll forgive me.

Anyway, I'm not tired, but my family is sleeping in the hotel room and so I guess I'll try and snooze a bit.  It will be pleasant dreams that's for sure, as the whole evening has seemed like a dream.

p.s.  Mrs. Topdown is a lot of fun too.  It was a treat meeting her.

Not yet, but I will be.  It's the right price and does the job I want done.  I'll be checking with my local shop to see if they can get it as I prefer using to work with the local guys when possible.

I've got a Yamaha F310.  That's as beginner of a guitar as you get when it comes to steel string folk bodied guitars.  A buddy of mine who has been playing professionally since he was 16 (he's 44 now) has one and still uses it around campfires and such.  It's his go-to acoustic.  The F-335 is a good guitar that you may outgrow, but then again you may not.   $99 is a good price for one, but not unbelievable.  List Prices on guitars are meaningless.  Street price is what you want to look for.  At $99, the F-335 is still below street price, making it a good value.

All that said, if the guitar doesn't fit your hands or sound good to you, then it's not a good value.  One warning - Yamaha uses cheap strings.  If you buy the guitar, put a set of D'Addorios or Elixir Nanowebs on it and you'll like the sound a whole lot better.  I use 11s or 12s on mine usually.  I think Yamaha usually strings them with 10s, which in my mind are for electrics and electrics only.

Cameron - I'm going to start charging my audiences a lot more now, too.  Probably triple my usual fee.  Put with the Chordie increase, I'll be able to dream that much more.
