Hehe bootleger, hate to break it to you but if you played Stairway to Heaven you'd probably be kicked out... the general consensus among guitar players is that everyone knows how to play it and its really really overplayed. The only really good version is the original, in my opinion.

If i had a band with me, i'd play Come Sail Away by Styx,

Otherwise, probably American Pie.

What you say makes some sense, dwv, but i'll have to say a few things.

I also have to ask a question, were the Who the only band who played at Leeds this summer? besides their warm-up band? if yes, then i'm suprised. If no, then it makes more sense. I saw them in Philadelphia for their first tour in North America in five years, and i have to say that it was phenomenal. and i've seen my share of concerts. A possible reason was that they were more prepared to give it their all, when no other bands were taking away from the feel of the concert. Or it could have been they were psyched for performing in America for the first time in a while. Who knows?

Well, i will admit that their cd is considerably better than their performance. The only song i cant stand listening to is In The Ether, which is sung by Pete in a much lower key than he's used to (i hate to insult him, but it sounds like a walrus belching). And about never seeing a show by them again, well, personally i think that there may not be any more shows for these antiques.

As a songwriter, Petes' still my favorite though. I mean, just for the quantity of songs he's put out. Basically all of the Who's hits, then four or five years of his own stuff, and now even more songs. Its insane!

But i get off topic. thanks for the insight.

Hey again, James,

Thanks for the insight, and what ou said more or less lines up with what i was thinking - Yes is one of my favorite bands.

What you said about adding music, i have music thought up and aligned, but the timing is just plain odd. I'll try and get it on a website.

But thanks anyway, i'll keep everyone posted on any more songs i write.

Hey there, with the holidays coming up, i was curious as to what the well-educated masses here at Chordie thought of good old Christmas music. I have a few favorites, mostly good old classic stuff, The Christmas Song, Silver Bells, etc... But right now im listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's album Christmas Eve and Other Stories, and well, to say i'm impressed would be putting it mildly. What strikes me most about the songs on the cd is the fact that the guitar is featured in so many of them. In Silent Nutcracker, for instance, the entire song is two acoustic players playing the various songs from the classic Nutcracker ballet. in Mad Russian's Christmas, heavy distortion smashes through what most people only know as the Home Alone theme song. Overall, an incredible Christmas album.

But i get off track. My question is, what is everyone's favorite Christmas song? if you know the artist list him/her/them too.

Thanks!

Actually, red, if the strings are being  changed on an acoustic guitar, its better for the body of the guitar to change them one at a time. It sounds odd, but its true.

Although with all the strings off, it makes for easier cleaning, it also releases all of the pressure thats on the soundboard of the guitar. Now, you'd say, whats wrong with that? well, if you change your strings very often, and take them all of at the same time, the soundboard will weaken at a considerably faster pace, possibly ruining the intonation of your guitar.

This isnt an issue on electrics, as the solid body on most electrics has more than enough support to survive such fluxuations in string pressure.

If you change your strings often (once every few weeks), change them one string at a time. Once every 5 changes or so you can take them all off and clean the guitar. But if you only change your strings once every 6 or 7 months, its A-okay to take all of them off at once.

Another case where you should take all the strings off at the same time is when you put the guitar into storage or shipping. Thats when you should always take them all off.

Just thought i'd point that out. Everything else everyone said looks to be fine though. Good luck, and keep playing!

Hey there cragh,

If you're talking about what i think you are, then i can help. Would an example of what you're looking for be in any particular song? the "pick sliding" i have in mind is the bit near the beginning of Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train. If thats what you're thinking of, its real easy.

Take your pick, and hold it at an angle to the string, then press down on the string. This should be above the pickups. Then, just drag the pick down and up the neck of the guitar, and if you're using distortion it should give you a kind of whine sound.

That should help, if not, sorry!

Hey there everyone! ive been kinda stuck with songs lately, but one day while doing menial math problems, it occured to me that i could use whatever happened to be around me could be turned into a song.

Thus, i combined two things that happened to be in the room and came up with this song...

Its a kind of smooth, almost jazzy song.

Oh, see the water stir in the pond,

A tiny ripple in the-

Oh, bubbles surface from the bottom mud,

And a paper fish suddenly-

Oh, the inky depths are unexplored,

And its impossible to-

Oh, the mache dragonflies dance and spin,

But it wont last that long

(chorus) All our lives, we're trapped in  a pond

as paper fish swim through the murky lake

i'll tell you now, it wont be long

Till we all just plain dissolve

Oh, origami herring dart

'twixt the reeds and rushes

Oh, graphite frogs and chalk-white herons

hide in this pond of tedious life

All our lives, we're trapped in a pond

As paper fish swim through the murky lake

i'll tell you now, it wont be long

Till we all just plain dissolve.

(repeat chorus, fade out)

Now, i'd give you all tabs to work with, but i regret to say, the timing of the song is just bonkers. Like, wild strawberry bites, just, compromised reality, think, total vocabulary failure.

So, sorry about that. I'll see if i can get a good recording of it and play it there, then get it up here. Tell me what you think of the lyrics though! and thanks!

This may help with the overall quality of the tabs listed here on Chordie.

I have noticed that most tabs have been from one or two huge archive sites with several thousand tabs on them.

What may work better is to look around for artist pages with tabs on them, these are generally more accurate than the big, i like to call them "tab corporation", sites. Just for example, a google search for Paul Simon tabs can lead you to his fan site, which has tabs listed for his more popular songs, which i have found to be pretty accurate.

This may already be common knowledge to the administrator(s) here at Chordie, so sorry if this is already known!

Hey everyone, im looking for some really good fingerpicking songs, the kind that make passersby drop their groceries kinda thing.

Any band would be fine.

And i already have Blackbird, Dust In The Wind, and Tears In Heaven down so dont mention them.

Heheh.

ill return the favor somehow.

Hey mate,

Yeah, that Bmin is a toughie at first, but you get used to it

Something that made the transitions easier for me was the following:

Instead of actually barring the whole chord, you can use your thumb to mute the bottom two strings and your fingers like so:

First finger:first string, second fret

Second finger: Second string, third fret

3rd finger: 4th string, fourth fret

4th finger: 3rd string, fourth fret

Heres a chart thingy. in case the above isnt clear.

the numbers on the chart denote which finger to press down with.

Fret

      =======

1    |  |  |  |  |  |

2    |  |  |  |  |  1

3    |  |  |  |  2 |

4    |  |  3 4  | |

Lastly, Barre power chords, a simple concept that takes a while to get down.

to play pretty much any power chord, put down your first finger on any fret, and your third finger on the fret two frets higher.

The neck map, a quick way to remember is by knowing that the fifth fret on any string (except the third string, in which its the fourth) is equal in pitch to the next higher string.

the string pattern goes as such

E A D G B e

the lowercase "e" of course the top, and highest string

to start off, i'd reccomend learning the first four frets on each string, ill do two strings, the sixth and the fifth (E and A, respectively)

String |  Open | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th|

  E      |    E     |   F   | F#   |  G   |  G#|

  A      |    A     | A# |  B    |   C  |  C# |

If you know the rest of the strings, it goes like that.

Remember, the major scale goes (w for whole step, h for half step)

w w h w w w h

If none of this makes any sense to you, sorry, and try getting a music theory book or two!

Welcome!

Hello once again everyone,

I havent been on for a while (computer needed fixing)

And i spent a lot of time experimenting around with sounds on my guitar.

Most people figure you can get a few different sounds on a guitar, mostly just strumming and noodling, etc.

But i found out you could really spew out some filth.

For instance, if you rest your entire hand lightly on the ninth fret and rake very quickly, with plenty of distortion, you can get an almost spaceship-like sound.

Other tricks can be sliding your pick down the frets of the lower strings, and doing what i call "string scratching"

That is, holding your pick at right angles to the top strings, and with any fret pressed with your left hand (right if your lefty) scratching at the top string with lots of pressure. Makes a very eerie noise.

Anyway, to the point-

Any other tricks any of yall can do?

Im into adding these odd noises near the beginning and ends of songs. Thanks!

Intermediate Rock Guitar by Paul Howard ---

Book i used to learn my pentatonics... teaches a lot more than scales...

i can also reccomend going to a workshop to learn them. I highly reccomend the National Guitar Workshop, which has many locations and classes to take.

(the book comes with a cd, so you can practice along)...

$20.95 USD, btw...

Hey there, im curious, how much would an average quality banjo sell for new? used?

and, does anyone know how much one could expect to pay for an electric violin/fiddle?

I saw one on a trip to france recently but i cannot remember the price.

I'm interested in learning all sorts of stringed instruments, banjo, violin, and sitar among them

I wont even try my luck asking anyone here if they know where to find a sitar.

The Who's new album, Endless Wire, came out yesterday. I highly reccomend it. Anyone who doesnt have it, should probably go out and buy it soon.

For guitar players, listen especially to the second track, Man In A Purple Dress. Townshend's guitar work is nothing short of amazing.

Anyone else get the album? what do you have to say?

Nothing to say besides this should go in the Requested Songs section of the forum, not here. Its okay though. Also: Chordie does not host songs themselves, it uses other site's tabs and formats them so they fit here. Sort of like Dogpile as a search engine.

Welcome!

Basically, im looking for some good acoustic songs that have vocal parts, and dont need a backing band.

Im looking for some good ones because i need a few to add to a set list. I may even record versions. Fingerpicking songs would be great, im working on my fingerpicking, and dont mention either Dust In The Wind or Blackbird (i already know them)

Any song would be appreciated. I may already know a few songs that you mention though, so dont post really easy, well known songs.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey there, im looking to get a good delay pedal, ive been playing about 2 1/2 -3 years, though most people say im better than that.

Anyway, a birthday of mine is coming up (nov 1st) and i was looking into treating myself to a delay pedal, so i was wondering what i should look for, as in price, quality and stuff.

The local music shop has a Danelectrico pedal, which i've played through and is pretty good, but im more attracted to a Boss delay pedal, despite the higher cost. Ive heard the Boss pedals work the best, and the longest, and are a great deal. Anyone have one such Boss delay pedal, and any tips on it? what i should expect to pay?

Or, anyone have an alternative? maybe a cheaper brand that does the same stuff?

Thanks!

Truly, you all flatter me. I'm going to set up a myspace when i get either better recording equipment (my current stuff is awful) or get a chance to get to a professional recording studio. I'll try to release an EP or something. we'll see.

And if you're looking to write your own songs, its really very simple. all you need is a teaspoon of music theory and a cup of creativity. Mix well, bake for 45 minutes at 500 degrees, and let cool. Serves millions.

Try writing out lyrics first and then thinking up music for it, and if that comes as too difficult, then write out the music first and think of lyrics next.

Personally, with me, it depends on the song. This one i wrote with the second method, and with Its Illegal To Carry Guns In Heaven i used the first method. I think my next song will be about a man from the 1950's trapped in the year 2007, and his adventures. The style will naturally have to be a Buddy Holly-ish rock n' roll peice. Ill notify 'yall when i get some work done on it.

And by the way, call me Anthony or Tony or whatever. WickedAxeOfFury is a bit of an inside joke between some mates of mine and i.

Howdy again, yall, im working on another fun song

This one's titled Rocket Ship Boy

It has an interesting back-story.

Awhile ago, i was going out with this one girl. And one day, as she was describing me to a friend of hers, she mentioned that I played the guitar. Now, this friend, for some reason, associated guitars with space ships.

Thus, i became Rocket Ship Boy.

I thought it would be interesting to write a song about one such Rocket Ship Boy, and here it is. Let me know what you think of it!

This is played with an electric, heavy distortion, set it to one of the neck pickups. Im going to write out the chords, but if you want me to tab it just ask.

Opening/ Riff A

|: F5 / / C5| G5 / / D5| A5 / / E5| F5 / / / neutral

Verse:

|: F5 / / / | C5 / / / neutral(2x)

|: G5 / / / | D5 / / / neutral(2x)

Riff A

Verse

Chorus:

|F5 / / /| C5 / / /| G5 / / /| D5/ / /|(2x)

Riff A

Verse

Chorus

Solo: i just improv over Riff A, D minor pentatonic

Verse

Chorus

Repeat chorus, fade

Anyway, thats the chords, very simple, not a lot of thought, but i kinda wanted this to be a fun, happy song, not a lot of meaning to it.

Here comes the lyric machine! dont really critique me on these, i kinda forced a few of them.

See him fly over the roof of your house

See him leave a trail of smoke in the sky

See him fly over the hills and mountains

See his spirit never die

C'mon now, lets go and see him

Do his tricks and amazing feats

You know that when things look grim

He'll cure your blues with his beats

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship boy

He'll never stop till he brings you joy

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship lad

He'll never stop till you aren't sad

Flying higher, higher still

Like fireworks in the sky

That's what he does, he lives to thrill

Till the crowds say "ooh, oh my!"

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship boy

He'll never stop till he brings you joy

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship lad

He'll never stop till you aren't sad

He bursts from the clouds with an ear pounding noise

Every person from miles around runs to him

From the Rio Grande to Chicago, Illinois

To see if his light will ever dim

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship boy

He does adverts for general mills

Cause he's the

(rocket ship) the rocket ship boy

If you ask he'll say he does them for thrills!

(repeat, fade)

Great job, even with the spelling issues.

I think it would be interesting to see a song written in your native language. I find songs written in other languages intriguing.

Hey there, im working on this one still, i'd like to see what people here thought of it. Slightly satirical, kinda humorous.

the whole song uses a simple strum pattern, a

one and a two, three e and a four e and a

pattern. if you know how to count that. im assuming you do.

Intro:  Fmaj7               Emin (x2)

Verse: Fmaj7               Emin (x4)

Bridge: G         D            C          Em (x2)

Verse

Bridge

Chorus: G           C (x3) , D    C

Verse

Bridge

Chorus

Outro: Same as intro

Anyway, those are the chords, here's the lyrics. the timimgs pretty simple.

The first time you stabbed me, i knew it would be true

The girl i saw in the police lineup, well i knew that it was you

And now we're together, i dropped the charges, and you know that its right

And i know its true love when i see the sun glinting off your gun so bright

I know that you're a bit different, your not like the other girls

I know that your homicide charges dont mean nothing in this world

But you see, when we die, we'll go someplace else

And im not sure you'll be with me, cause i know that ... (next four lines are the chorus)

Its illegal to carry guns in heaven

Its illegal to carry guns in heaven

Its illegal to carry guns in heaven

But thats ok, i love you anyway

I havent thought up the second half of the song, but you get the idea.

Well anyway, tell me what you think

Thanks!

Hey there, i think i found a nice way to put it to music

for the first verse, take whatever strum pattern you want using the chords;

| C / G | Em / Am | for the first verse, paragraph, whatever you want to call it, and;

| Am / C | Dm / G | for the second verse, and then just alternate them. If you want to sing, have a kind of high, airy tune to it. i figured out a nice melody but im not sure of the notes so i wont put them down. Great idea, by the way.
