thanks James smile
I'd never heard of any of those untill i read altex's post (i took a teensy weensy bit of piano and my dad plays) then it started sounding familiar... so thanks to both of you for this information

the presbytyrian church here has a harpsichord.... friend of mine works down there and brought us in to see it and the pipe organ. I don't know if they still make new ones though cuz this one looked pretty old

This is [G]romantic hell, not [D]domestic [G]bliss

There's always one line in a song that sticks out to me, and this was the one for this song. I think there was a lot of thought behind this song, and that it says more than what at first meets the eye.... impressive smile

not normally a topic i would be interested in, but i think the structure and word choice in this song was very well done, so good job upyerkilt.

I know that when you look up a song here on chordie that you can move it up or down by 'semitones'. Maybe this is a stupid question, but im unfamiliar with this term, is a semitone a whole or half step??

i read every once in a while if i get in the mood, and i can find something that interests me. Last year I read Johnny Cash's autobiography, which was pretty cool cuz he talks about alot of old country guys.
I read the Bible, but I don;t think that's really the same thing...

A good read is the Foxfire books, written by students who interviewed a bunch of old mountain peoples. Neat accounts of uses for woods and things, and folklore remedies are hilarious.
To cure spider bite they said you should drink strong liqour from 7:00 pm till morning,
for a sore throat your sposed to get a work boot that smells really funky and tie it around your neck sos you can smell it lol

is it too high or too low??

If its too low you can capo it somewhere, each fret is like going a half step up. You can play the chord shape C, and be in C#,F,F#,G, Ab, etc. etc.

If its too high, you can try tuning down, or capo it up and sing the lower part maybe.

well doc, that would depend on who you ask lol
Among certain peoples he's a great performer, but an equal amount of people despise him (then again I guess thats true of anybody).
Originally he was marketed to be the next white boy rapper, then when vanilla ice came along he kind of took the spotlight. Kid ROck was never as mainstream and flaky as vanilla ice....
When he started to get a little older he drifted back towards his rock n roll and even country roots, learned to play guitar, started writing what he called 'southern rock mixed with the hip-hop'. These days he leans towards rock and country more than rap, sings with poeple like hank williams jr., zz top, jerry lee lewis.....
Personally I like SOME of his music, if you can handle a little mild rapping and a lot of bleeps I would suggest looking up,

'white boy quite like me'

'cowboy'

'hillbilly stomp'

'only god knows why'

'picture'

... if you come across a CD, 'Cocky' was probly my fav. (and the only one I own).

I heard you went out west somewhere
Changed your name and cut your hair
it was 'all aboard' and 'full steam ahead'
leaving me to sing the song you never read....

okay its not polished up yet but thats kind of what im working with right now for the next verse...

well can't say about jumping from guitat to piano, but I can say the couple of years of piano I took made the transition to guitar (the thing  I really wanted to play all along) a lot easier, mainly because I had a basic knowledge of musical terms and even a little bit of know how about chords and scales....
Anytime you play any instrument, you learn musical structure and patterns, which even if played a different way are universal. so i would say if you already know how to play guitar, jumping to another instrument would be much easier than if you'd never picked anything up.

doc,
Actually my brother and father each play instruments (papa can tear a piano up, and isaac can pretty much play anything he picks up), i also have three or four cousins and a friend here and there that play guitar. I play at church, both in the main worship service and in the youth band, and my family has regular get to togethers where there might be five or six guitars playing at once at all different skill levels everything from johnny cash to amazing grace lol
I also play alone constantly, well as constantly as I can around school and all that stuff.
I'm working on blues scales because I'm trying to learn to play my electric, and I feel like i'm making improvements, mostly because of the help and information I got from this site.

So they say that people who are musically inclined also have a tendency to posess artistic capabilities. I don't know if this true for everybody, but I do like to draw, mostly little cartoonish type things that get me a lot of compliments (more than they're worth as far as I'm concerned)and the very ocassional serious piece (usually on request people can be so demanding lol). I do find that the better I get at guitar the better I get at drawing too.... of course they say we should be good at math too and i got held back a year lol
So my question is are there any other chordians who have artistic or creative talent besides music? I'm trying to see if what 'they' say is credible I guess, or at least if anybody else has found this to be true.

well i womt give my real name, but I'm from texas, i'm 16, big music fan of just about anything good, been playing a few years now. I'm not what you could call computer saavy, in fact when I got the internet at the beginning of the year I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what people do on it all day lol.... don't answer that because I think I figgered out the only thing they COULD be doing.
Anyway my point is that when I started looking for music I stumbled on this site via Google, and its really the only place I come regularly. I've found it extremely helpful (no more hand written sloppy papers with penciled in chords that I 'figured out' off a CD... or at least almost no more old habits die hard). I think its a really great example of good internet, and somewhere where you can come for help, advice, or even just to chat a little, without the nasty language and rude advertisements.
I've seen big improvements in my plying since I started using chordie, in fact i think its even becoming more obvious to other people too. Last night we had a singin' at our church and me and isaac and bro. david did a special with two guitars and a mandolin. An old friend of mine came up and said 'Wow you guys are awesome, I never realised.'
Don;t know about them but I think its cuz Ive gotten better, and that makes me happy smile

Once again it was about 11:30 and I was trying to get to sleep because I had to be up early for church, when out of the blue came another song.... so here it goes.

G                          D                        G
You don't have to tell me to move on
                                                   D
I heard it already in my favorite song
       G                                                  C
But there are some things I wish I'd said
                        G                 D                     G
They're in the words of a song you never read

CHORUS
C                                                 G
If you ever lay awake and wonder
                                                  D
What it was going through my head
        G                                C
The answers to your questions
         G          D                       G
Were in the song you never read

I remember the last night I cried I for you
I asked my heart, and it said I'm through
But before I went to bed
I wrote the song you never read

I think maybe it needs another verse, but I won't have time to work on it today, busy busy busy... any ideas or suggestions??

there's this little acoustic bluesy type thing i like to play, and being a bluesish little ditty coming up with verses is always lots of fun. I finally came up with one that stuck pretty well so here it is:
(Keep in mind that you can switch to seventh chords pretty much any time if you like, kind of neat little sound if you go back and forth but yall do what you want)...

E
Well every song I write's done been wrote before

A
I can't get rich cuz I'm too busy stayin' poor

B7
I can't win for losin'

A                                 E
so I aint gonna try no more

Well if I played a little better I might get on the radio
And if I looked a little better they might put me on a T.V. show
I can't win for losin'
But I'm happy enough at home

My ears are tired from hearin' so much bad news
I've walked my miles, and I've paid my dues
I can't win for losin'
But I can play the blues

Way back home I had some good good times
But I had to move on and leave them all behind
I couldn't win for losin'
But I'm gonna be just fine

Then I do a little lead thingamajigger, but its in E so yall can play around with and find something you like.

nice little song James,
I think its our own faults that keep things from being that way, keep in mind that if the world were actually FAIR, every time we act selfishly or mean we'd get exactly what we deserve.... but its a nice thought. Especially barefoot, i hate shoes.... actually im barefoot right now lol

saw this show on CMT. sweet home alabama won, which made me happy at first till i realized free bird didn't win.... i was little unsure at first which i preferred but i got to thinking about how awesome the free-bird solo is, and the fact its one of the most requested songs in music history, so i think it should have won. What would yall pick,

FREE BIRD,

or

SWEET HOME ALABAMA???

or maybe something else as the greatest southern rock song of all time?
