Well done Crevs, excellent after only 4 months. As noted above, you may need to get the key just right, but you have a good voice lurking in there! Some people are just naturals, darn them!
Cheers!

Hi tandm3 - couldn't think what a guitar arm rest might be, but thanks to google, I now know! Would be interested to try one out. I also know more about JP himself, also very interesting.
The book I have is "Single string melody method for folk guitar" - will get round to learning some of it one day!
Cheers!

Re: Fingernails on your picking hand (23 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I prefer to use nails, but if they get too long they tend to break, so I trim them regularly. Found an old "how to play guitar" book by John Pearse (quite a famous old folkie I think) - he talks about sticking single layers of tissue (kleenex) to the nails with nail varnish, building up the layers over time. Then when it gets too thick you strip it all off & start again. Sounds like a lot of mess & hassle, but if you gig a lot it may be worthwhile. If anyone needs more details I will dig out the book & quote or paraphrase the whole thing.

The usual jam nights are where you plug into the PA provided & do a song or two, on your own or with others, simples! Usually everyone plays in turn. Your local paper/what's on/gig guide should list them, or try www.folkjam.org. Or have a wander round local pubs that have bands on & ask some musicians, but be careful out there!
There must be other info on the web, too...

Saw a car recently with the usual "Baby on Board" sign in the back window, but it also had "Princess on Board" and "Porn Star on Board". Classy.

Have you thought of going to open-mic or jam nights locally (perhaps with friends or parents) & playing on your own? Preferably try a few to find one that is welcoming to new talent & not too rowdy! Probably the best way to meet like minded people.

Re: Buying loop pedal - RC2 Toney?? (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Thanks for the info, guys. I think I will just lurk around eBay & try to pick one up cheap as poss. I have doubts about whether I have the skills to use one! I notice that most of these on eBay are almost new, as the owner couldn't use it/didn't like it. Anyhoo, will give it a go sometime!
Cheers!

Re: Playing and singing (20 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Probably because my voice doesn't have much of a range, I find that I have to fiddle around with most songs, to get them in the right key, in other words so that my voice is at it's most comfortable. Sometimes I have to transpose first, to get the easiest chords to play, then experiment with the capo until it sounds right. Just something you learn over time, unless you have a musical friend who can advise you!
Anyway, best of luck & welcome to Chordie!

Topic: Buying loop pedal - RC2 Toney?? (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Am interested in trying out the wonderful world of looping, having read posts by Southpaw, amongst others. Am thinking of the Boss RC-2, which sells at about 150 GBP in the UK. Are there any other models I should consider, perhaps paying a bit more for extra features? I just play & sing on my own, not as part of a band.
Would they be much cheaper in the USA? My wife is off to Chicago soon (without me, very sore point, dontwanttotalkaboutit!), - is there a good music store centrally? Will find out where she is staying & report back. Or are there any good offers on the RC-2 in the UK at the moment (have looked on eBay & am watching a couple).
Cheers Chordians!

Re: Old Strings.... (10 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Have used them to make weedguards for fishing hooks. Cut a piece of 3rd/4th string (depending on size/gauge of hook) & whip/glue one end just below the eye of the hook. Then bend it to the right sort of shape & cut to the right length. I use one of these to replace the treble that you usually get on a lure - helps to keep weed off the hook & avoid snags.

Re: HAPPY MAYDAY BANK HOLIDAY! (15 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi - same to you, though not so happy in this house! And it's raining.
Round here the locals do something called Jack-in-the Green (see hastingsjack.co.uk) - something to do with Pagan rites, Morris Dancing & Beer. I was hoping to go & see it today, but my wife is not too well (no, not my cooking), so am at home doing gardening & childcare. Fortunately, my lovely wife made some carrot cake muffins recently & there are still some left, so it's not all bad!
Would love to get down to your local tonight - could do with a night out, but would take me about 4 hours, I think!
Need to go & start on dinner now, though!
Have a good evening.

Not sure how I would get it to you, where are you? Also, can't get my scanner to work! Might be best to e-mail me.
Cheers, Paul.
