Re: Windows 10??? (6 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Has anyone here found any new tips tricks etc. that will help or hurt using the new system?
Just this one for sure (and should be done prior to ANY major change in your system hardware or software)....... Do a FULL backup of your entire drive on another drive (ie: portable). So IF you should desire to recover all the stuff that can get lost by accident, it won't be out in the ether. I have heard of folks deciding to "unwind" their Windows 10 installation only to find that 10 did not archive all the old files, which makes "going back" difficult if not impossible.
Another that comes to mind is to be sure and run the hardware compatibility check (off the Microsoft website) to insure that all your drivers and such are supported by the new operating system. I cannot imagine anything worse (other than losing all your personal data files, pictures, music, medical and Tax records) than installing a new OS and finding that your display etc. won't work so you are literally "shooting in the dark" trying to sort it back to where you started.

Bill & Dondra, That is great news that your recurring trials are finally over, but distressing about all that you have to tolerate to get something done that should have been done in the first place. If the "bean counters" did their jobs, it might seem that the combined costs of all those hotel/hospital stays and such, far overshadow the cost of the "installation".

Really reachin'....? Anything by Firefall, Strange Way is a good choice, not too difficult (except for that darn Bb, I use the barres). If and when I drag one of their tunes out of the binder, most folks seem to not have heard them, so style changes are easy to get away with.

Doug, right now im in Renton, but well be temp in Whidby Island till the rest the family can follow, how far are you form here? I can see a local ish get together if the passes dont snow us in!
get you me and Jerome and whoever else is in the area.
Passes?..... what passes? Nothing but a big long stretch of Interstate (about 7 hours worth). Used to have family up in Kent and Kingston that we would visit fairly often, then Brother Bill moved to Mesa AZ, and we moved Mom down to Portland to be closer to the family in her "older than me" years. Which brings to mind that we really should head that way for a visit real soon.... like before the real snow arrives. Sometime in the Spring mjght work.

Well Beamer, Welcome to the Pacific Northwest!!!! You did bring your wetsuit and water-wings didn't ya' ?? That Seattle area gets it's fair share of rainfall, starting about this time of year, where abouts did you settle in? Anyway it is nice to have another Chordiean up here in the region. There are few enough of us out here on the West Coast and plenty of space for more.
ETA: Plenty of good music being created around these parts, so be sure and check out the music scene. Also drive safe in the colder months.....
ice storms are sometimes a traffic issue. Few rattlesnakes, few flash-floods, fewer tornados, cold wet winters, good fishin'.

Welcome. You are in a great group.Almost like one big family. I am probably known as the hoarder of the group. LOL
More like the "Collector"...... we could change your title?
Now back to the topic; I also checked out several of your YT snippets, and agree you are worthy of the praise given. I detect and am interested in what harmonizer you use?? Specifics please, as I have one but have not fiddled with it much for comparison's sake.
Thanks, Doug

Welcome to Chordie John! There is a fine core of regulars hanging around these parts and look forward to making friends quickly. I think for most of us that "gap" is common..... no worries, even if we forgot the tunes our fingers remember (for the most part).
Wander through the forums and please read the "stickys" for hints and guidelines to make the most of your Chordie experience. You might also consider moving your post into the Chat Corner where it will be viewed by a wider membership. At one time or another we have played around with drop D tuning (my preference is DADF#AD and mostly on 12 string) there was also a thread on alternate tunings awhile back in Music Theory if memory serves.
Oh. and I would add that 61 is not "old"...... it's "experienced".
Welcome Aboard!

Looking for work in the music world? Just guessing as this is a music site. I would think you could take talent almost anywhere in the world and find some kind of employment performing or writing, or just backing up some small band.
Keeping in mind that you have presented two choices (only) and the current state of the economy globally....... I'm with Dino, start close to home and work out. It is not cheap to travel.

I think there is a post around here somewhere by Mekidsmom, that has guidelines for getting most mobile devices to work around the standard format. I thought it was up in the "stickys" but not sure. We'll look around for it and post a link: it refers to viewing the pages as a desktop rather than in the mobile view.
ETA: Try this link: http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic. … 19#p166319
although it refers particularly to ads, it does outline how to get the desktop view on your mobile device (which I think most of the conflicts are hiding).

See, you can get 4 quarters out of the Seahawks (contrary to popular belief). But brother the offense on both sides were busting through! Wilson and Kapernek were each sacked something like 6 times each, downfield coverage was excellent making it hard for either one of them to get off a decent pass. Hence you hang around the pocket too long, you gonna' get spanked.

Re: Rugby Playoffs! (21 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Yeah it was a good game! Next up (I think) is Argentina and Australia to see who gets to play them in the final, which should also be a game worth seeing because at this level the teams are strong and evenly matched. What really strikes me is the strength and endurance of the players. Unlike American football where you see guys 6'4' and pushing 300 Lbs+, these fellows are something like 6'2' and 205Lbs! Not a double cheeseburger in the bunch, just rawhide and spring steel.

I would like to note, for the sake of my sanity, that it is "ESPRESSO" not "EXPRESSO." One is steamed coffee, the other is a magical incantation at Hogwarts.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
I stand corrected....... darn that phonics!! But then again it does reinforce the adage that we don't pay enough attention to the spelling, as long as it has the right number of letters and the appropriate sounds at the beginning and end of the word.

Re: bar chords (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
It so much sounds like more practice is needed. To help you get more comfortable using the barre, you might try playing open chords (that I assume you are already familiar with) and THEN play the same tune again using ALL barre chords. The object is to develop the dexterity and strength in your barres, along with reinforcing the muscle memory in the open chord shapes.
By the time you master a few songs in that manner, you should almost be able to "mix it up" between the two without having to race up and down the fretboard. You are gonna find that some open shapes will become easier to play without the index finger (as you learn the shapes in the barres) leaving your index free to spring into position as required. (Hint: barres are easier on electric, although I use them all the time on acoustic... it just takes a bit more strength and good thumb position well behind the neck).
Be sure to mix in some scales and riffs to keep your fingers flexible as well or as your strength increases, you agility in playing arpeggios might suffer...... kinda like getting "muscle-bound". Take breaks often and elevate the neck towards your shoulder to allow your thumb to get centered on the back of the neck. Your wrist will thank you.

Re: Starbucks coffee (40 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Most coffee served here in the States would be refered to in Europe as "Cafe Americain", pretty much a 4oz demitasse watered down to something like 10oz ....... most barristas will be disgusted by the request, and some will refuse to serve it.
Starbucks, Dutch Bros., Java Joes, Coffee Culture, and many other expresso stands will have one of those expresso machines, and can put out a good cup if you order what you like (it's all in the "code" you see). I'm not really a coffee snob, but we have two roasters here in my little town, Sivetz and Allan Brothers. Along with all of the above mentioned vendors..... you can get spoiled, and beat up over pricing. My preferance is good old "home Brew" fresh ground & run through a Krups drip. I also have a small expresso machine for those occasional mochas, and guests, and can crank out a reasonable simile of a custom cup...... including the whipped cream!
For those that shop Costco, if you have ever bought the Kirkland 100% Columbian 3lb can (dark roast), it's fairly inexpensive, and roasted/ground and packaged by ...... wait for it..... Starbucks (their home base is Kirkland, WA)!! So you may have had it and not known. My advise is to buy whole beans, buy a grinder, and always use filtered (un-chlorinated low mineral) water, and refrigerate the beans to preserve freshness.
Cheers! Time for a "warm-up".....

That was some good football!! Green Bay is smokin', taking care of business and always fun to watch. As for our Seahawks..... something like 110 yards of penalties! Really guys? Leading into the 4th and then WTF!
Not even wanting to mention my Beavers and the trouncing they got down in Tuscon from Arizona...... but will anyway. 44-7! Must have been the heat, or maybe we've just got the lamest team in the Pac. I wonder if I should call the coach and see if he wants any moving boxes? I've a few that WERE destined for the recycling bin.

In much, MUCH better news, my Huskies went down to LA last night and beat USC. Not bad for 17 point underdogs. It also validates my position that letting Steve Sarkasian (now forever known as "Lane Kiffen Jr.") go and hiring Chris Peterson was a complete upgrade for the UW. It's the first time a UW Huskies football team has beaten a ranked opponent on the road in something like a decade.
They get an Oregon team that is on it's heals next Saturday. If they win that game I may have to miss a few days recovering from my hangover.
Well Jerome if you caught what the Cougars did to the Ducks yesterday...... you ought'a think about re-stocking the bar this week! I forsee a nasty case of "the Moose Flu" in store for next Monday morning.
"Moose Flu"; adjective: the general feeling of illness that corresponds with a really late night consuming excessive quantities of distilled or other spirits with groups of jubilant people at the local Moose Lodge or similar venue. Most common after Holiday Weekends or following winning major sporting events, occasionally Concerts, Weddings, and Funerals.

Re: Need chords (1 replies, posted in Song requests)
Well that can be a problem.... I checked out a video of a live rendition of the tune, and (as usual) Vince takes good use of his supporting musicians.
He has his guitar capo'd pretty high up the neck, so I would tend to think that the chords on cowboylyrics.com are pretty close, listed in drop D with the capo on 7.
He's no slouch guitar-picker and with his vocal range, I'm thinkin' that most of the other listings you have found might also work once you get your capo up around that 5-7th fret area (many folks posting chords omit mentioning the key adjustment and refer only to the fingering shape/chord).

Thanks for posting Lou, but in order to better locate a problem and solution we do need a bit more info from you. Is it all songs, or just a particular one, and the artist and title if you please. If it was a particular song book in the "public" group, which one? More specific the better so we can duplicate your issue.
A quick general wandering around seems all as it should be running Linux on a Firefox browser, with ABP and Ghostery the current hardware is HP laptop.
Thanks again for reporting a problem, we can't fix what we don't know about.

Re: Fingering Exercises for Guitar (24 replies, posted in Music theory)
Well Bax, I see you got your thread moved.... don't know if it was you or Roger, but this should be better. Usually things can only be moved by the author of the post, or section moderator (yes we have our assigned areas of responsibility), or the CO/XO (who are fairly high up the chain of command).
Standard notation is usually learned seated at a piano bench (it was for me). Being right handed it makes sense to just lay the guitar flat across my knees and the staff kinda matches the strings. From there it is just counting intervals to see the finger placement.
As for your Village of 100 People........ at the rate we're going it'll wind up a Ghost Town.
Keep treading water buddy! It's gotta stop raining long enough to snow. ![]()

Re: Fingering Exercises for Guitar (24 replies, posted in Music theory)
Bax buddy! You might want to just move this post into a new thread just to keep the "sticky" as small as possible, and to ensure that members get a reasonable chance to view your post. We tend to ignore the "tinted" threads after having familiarized ourselves and new additions tend to be overlooked.
Another thing I noticed is that you are using the top down string numbering, which although you explained it in your post, is generally reverse of what a good bunch of the tutors out there are teaching. IE: chord building on the 6th or 5th string root as in basic barre forms etc. It's not difficult to grasp for more practised members, but might prove puzzling to novice and some intermediate players. To me the ascending arpeggio in Gmaj, would naturally start on the 6 string (Bass E) 3rd fret (G) with the 1 finger (index) and go up the scale in order with each finger in turn in the fret it naturally resides in. But then again I started out playing "classical", and although I'm getting lax in my old age and changing genres often still try to hang on to those structured techniques lest I lose the ability to make the "stretch".
I too am a firm advocate of scales as a way to learn the notes, and take it a bit further by naming the note while visualizing the sheet notation so that too becomes habitual. I still can't "sight read" as quickly as some, but can pretty much find the correct note on the fingerboard from familiarity and interval.
It's all good!
