You could also go to http://www.Jamcenter.com and jam to the tracks there.

Try "Filter"'s first album. The songs on that album are ALL power chords except for "Stuck in here".
I can play every song on there with the exception of "Stuck in here" because it's acoustic...but I'm learning it fast.

I started out with "Filter", "Catherine Wheel" and "The Flys".
Easy Power-Chord players with good rhythms.

Honestly, I never saw a difference in any guitars until I got my Agile.
It sounds so much deeper than any other guitar I've tried/played.
All the stratocaster makes and knock-offs sound alike to me for some reason.
The Gibsons all sound alike to me.

Holy cow.

Boy did I get what I paid for...
$20.00 got me a toy basically.... LOL!!!
http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/12000523/Images/2/hawgreen1.JPG
The guitar is made out of what feels like plywood veneer and sounds like a ukelele (sp) being strangled by a cat.
The intonation is horrible...thanks to the unglued bridge.
Yes...I did say "UNGLUED BRIDGE"!!!
When I received it I went to tune the strings and the bridge completely fell out from under the strings!!
I replaced it as it should have been and tuned it up as best as I could.
The strings on it are "crapola x 20" and need to be ditched.
The tuners won't hold the strings in tune.
The thing has no spuds for a strap!?!
I had to tie a piece of string around the neck at the nut and at the holder for the strings in order to wear it.
*sigh*
I'm going to replace the strings for fun and see if I can get the bridge placement figured out to get the intonation right.
If it works after that I will keep it. If not I will give both guitars away to kids in my church. (I got a pink one for a for a friend but she took one look at it and said that she was going to trash it. She didn't even play it...LOL!)
Of course, it will be given to kids without enough age or sense to know what a worthless piece of tomfoolery they are....LOL!!

Well, at least I'm getting a good laugh everywhere I go with this thing.

I own a BACKPACKER Martin. You can also buy a "BABY TAYLOR", great sound, small guitar.
But the thing I love so bad using the "backpacker", is the SPECIAL sound. In fact that guitar is a problem for me, because I can not stand for 10 minutes, due to my car accident, and it is difficult playing when you sit. What I love most when playing the backpacker is the fact that the sound is between a GUITAR and BANJO, MANDOLINE?? I mean, they have a fantastic type of sound, and you can use it with a preamp, to play on stage, it gives a complete other sound, as I told. But I love my backpacker.
Are there other "travel" guitars, like taylor, ozark??

OOOOOH!!! Kewl!!!
I can't wait till mine comes in this weekend.

I own a Martin Backpack guitar as well.  It is very portable and stays in tune through a myriad of temperatures.  Definitely use a strap with it as it is difficult to play without one.  I have the steel string version and the sound is.....thin.  I've played the nylon string version and the tone is a bit warmer.  Yes, the steel string does kind of sound like a banjo.  Hope this helps!!

Peace in.  Peace out.

Can you put nylon strings on the steel string version of the guitar?
The one that I ordered is the steel string version.

Hi etc_04

Thanks for chiming in....

Do you use this technique yourself?  Do you have an example song, or chord progression where this technique adds significant value over just playing the chord normally....

I know I could try any chord to do this in reality... but I find, say when playing open chord C, the strings just dampen and it doesn't sound that good.....

Cheers

Jason

For electric guitar, listen to "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies.
The main riff uses that hammer-on technique. You will know it when you hear it cause it stands out a lot.

For Acoustic guitar, listen to "American Dreaming" by Dead Can Dance. You will hear it more subtly in this song but it is there.

Hi all...

I'm not sure if anyone else has wondered this, but when you see good acoustic guitarists strumming away, they often seem to hammer their fingers on and off the fretboard whilst playing their chords (open and barr) in time with their strumming. I have always wondered what effect this creates whilst playing... or why they do it?  Does anyone know why or can anyone give me an example to try to demonstrate this effect please? Cheers

Jason

If you go on Youtube and check out videos of "Dead Can Dance" you can see the guitarist doing those hammer-ons like you speak of. You can also hear the subtle changes that the hammer-ons cause. They really accent and beautify the music and chords.

detman, its freaky but you could be talking bout me. same problem mate, husband not gutair, ive been playing gutair for about 12 years and in all that time never once has my husband gave any support or even comment on one single piece of music i was playing except to say where i was going wrong. few years ago, under the influence, he admitted he was jealous of my musical ability. denieded it afterwards, but that explained so much. think we should get together and write a song about it. noticed you adress your subject as fellow chordians, i do the same.  freaky!

Wow, that's quite a common set of circumstances.  And quite sad that he would choose to come down on you rather than learn from you and join you in your fun. Man, that really just sucks. I'm sure that there is some of the same jealousy in my wife.

I'm still suffering to this day, I have found an escape though....
I play at work!!
On my lunch breaks and mini-breaks I whip out the LP and Jam with my co-worker who has an acoustic yamaha. She strums the chords/rhythm and sings while I play lead and support. We have played "Zombie" by the Cranberries and "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club for the hospital crowd. We didn't get any claps but we did see a few people bobbing to the beat.

I can't wait until the backpacker guitars that I bought for my co-worker and I arrive next week. She is going to LOVE IT!! Then we won't have to lug around our heavy guitars and cases with us to work. We will have nice 2-pound acoustic guitars to play with.

I know it's harsh but I have to discount my wife's opinion and ignore it if I am going to do this the way I need to.
Sad...but it must come to be. This is my dream...not hers.

It always surprises me how many people are playing=going to church.
Here in Belgium, Europe, the churches are, it seems hard what I say, getting more and more empty. I am a Catholic (at least I was baptised), but not longer practising. My job as Medical Doctor Generalist  gave me a lot of satisfaction. But I had to stop, because of the sequels of a car crash. It is really amazing, and I think it is happening more and more, so we can not speak about a "fashion" to go to Rome, the Pope..
I know that there are more religions in the USA than in the whole world (same with lawyers). But how do you handle, react, when you see all these things going wrong? GOD= ALLAH, there is one big difference, they consider Jesus as a prophet. But reading the Bible and the Koran, there is not so much difference. Personnaly, I believe in REINCARNATION.
I see a lot of topics where people ask advise concerning guitars, amps, all for the church.
I will make a topic in the "chat-corner" about this "fascinating" subject.

It is getting harder and harder to walk the straight path as the days pass.
Many have fallen by the wayside.
Many straddle the fence.
Many have turned their backs.

The rest of us must persist until the return.

I also have a Zoom effects Floorboard. The wah effect is good for accenting some songs that I play in church.

Its a nice guitar - and I like taking it on walks - however it does lacks bass and volume so I wouldn't want to play it in an ensemble.

try the guitar in the shop is my advice

Thank you. I will try to find a local retailer.
The one I bought online was only 20 dollars. I can afford to waste that....if it doesn't sound good, I'll give it to one of the kids in church.

Greetings,

I just pulled the trigger on one of these splendid looking portable guitars. I LOVE my Silverburst Les Paul but lugging it to work every other day to play with people at lunchtime is getting tiresome! (It weighs 13 pounds)
In contrast, the Backpacker Guitar weighs a measly 2 pounds. Much easier on my arms and back for just jamming with co-workers.

I wanted the ability to play anywhere with little effort or strain so when I saw this guitar I jumped out of my seat.
I have read that it sounds very thin but with the size of it and the small resonating area, I expected as much.
I am going to have a pickup installed in it eventually but which would be the best for this guitar?

Does anyone have one already and can tell me what they're like? Mine won't be here till like...friday and I would like to learn as much before it gets here as I can.

Just strum on the off-beat (2&4) and dampen during the on-beat (1&3).
That's how I emulate Sublime anyway...or any reggae pretty much.

I think you all are right with your meanings but without knowless what you you can not play music with feeling from your heart.
you all that you first have to train what you want play and then anytime you can put in feeling into your play.
All you talk about the first position of pentatonic, but there 4positions more to play blues pentatonic.
That´s Am pentatonic scale
First position  second position    Third position   Fouth position   Fifth position
e - 5 & 8         e - 8 & 10         e -10 & 12         e -12 & 15        e-15 & 17
b - 5 & 8         b - 8 & 10         b -10 & 13         b -13 & 15        b-15 & 17
g - 5 & 7         g - 7 & 9           g -9 & 12          g -12 & 14        g- 14 & 17
d - 5 & 7         d - 7 & 10         d -10& 12         d - 12 & 14       d- 14 & 17
a - 5 & 7         a - 7 & 10         a -10&12          a - 12 & 15       a- 15 & 17
E - 5 & 8         E - 8 & 10         E -10&12          E - 12 & 15       E- 15 & 17

You have to train that position so long that you don´t have to think what position you play. Try to bind the postions and you will get fun with it.

That positions are for also for the other Chords you only have to choose the position on your neck. For example for F your first position is on the first fret.

Suuuhweeeeeeeeeet!!!

Thanks man!

Normally, on my silverburst LP, I use the neck pickup for bluesy/gospel sounds
and the bridge pickup for rock/metal/reggae sounds.

I use the middle pickup for when I want the bluesy/gospel sound with the crunch/breakup of the Bridge pickup. It allows me to go easy on the strings and get that soft mellow tone and then strum the strings hard to get that ROCK crunch.

Very very versatile pickup styles on the LP style guitars.
