Average playing (moderate strumming), I believe it comes out the sound hole at around 88-90 db's but, from your position as a player, only about 75-80 db's reach your ears. As mentioned you can always try some finger style. Also you may want to try practicing in a large room facing away from walls so the sound doesn't get reflected back to you as much. Best of luck! -Pix

Think I'll stick with the Hammer or Running man lol  Way back in the day (80's) I could moon walk along with all the other breakin' moves but I left that in the 80's and have no desire to resurrect them smile

Well I decided to wait on the Yairi for now and opted to put a paw port (we breed cocker spaniels wink ) in the S&P Showcase.. I put it a little lower since I had to position between existing side braces. I had a little battle scare there so it gave me the opportunity to remove that smile I know some have asked for a comparison clip and I'll get around to it... Just been lazy lately smile

That's just a piece of black paper taped behind it temporarily so it would show up better for the pic..

I'd love to the classifieds come about as well smile

I like the link idea ,but after thinking it over, I'm on the fence about it...  With the recommended sites there has been an exchange made and they have had to earn it. Also we have several companies that help support the site financially by adverticeing here and most are music/lesson oriented.... They may not find it very considerate recommending other/competitive sites over theirs as a sticky. Especially free ones, that's bound to be bad for business wink So IDK... I Think it would be helpful and would like to see it happen but (IMO) we'd need to discuss it with Per and get his approval first....

Brand new strings that you put on? Or are they from the factory? If it's the strings that came on it, I second BHA's opinion. Just because they look new doesn't mean they'll sound new wink Try some Aquilas on it...  Are you comparing it to the same model?  Peace! -Pix

Sorry you've had trouble... The glue was it exterior grade or interior grade? Always go for interior as the exterior will not hold as well. Was the finish applied under the bridge? Some manufacturers do this but it doesn't allow for a proper bond. If it was you'll need to trace and tape off the area and then sand it down to wood for a good bond before it's re-glued. Also, How tight did you clamp it? It's easy to over tighten and squeeze all the glue out if you're not careful. Snug is the key... I'd probably let it sit and cure for a few more days (about 5), Just to be safe...

For sure I wouldn't trash it!! I'd give it another go! But, if you decide you don't want to mess with it... Drop me an email! I'm always looking for projects to work on smile -Pix

Yep, Just click "public books" and you'll see a list of categories on the left, at the bottom of the list is a search option. Enter in the members name here and it will bring up any song books they have that are public.

Welcome to the forums! -Pix

I'm diggin' what I'm finding nowadays... Some great stuff out there from the 90's to today! Maybe it's just that with the internet music is more available and I'm finding more bands that suit my tastes...

I read both, but I usually prefer to use tab out of the two. I don't depend on notation or tab much though. I prefer to work them out myself. If I get stuck on a riff I might peak at a tab online for a little direction but that's about it. Most of the songbooks that I order are in notation and that's about the only time I use it. I can read and play tab like a book but notation I tend to spend more time on because in conveys more and I get hung up on getting it just right... Which is the reason I don't like notation personally. It seems to lose some of the feel, if you know what I mean.  If I'm working on something original, I always write it out in tab for future refrence and never use notation.

Hello Canudigit,
Welcome to the forums! Everyone teaches and learns differently...I wouldn't take anything personal. Myself, I see nothing wrong with the way things have been laid out. I struggled with learning theory. It took me awhile to finally grasp the concepts. What helped me the most was a friend that was able to finally lay it out in layman's terms similar to what you're doing. Once I had that basic understanding, I could make since of all the finer points and apply them to what I knew. Sure there were the details that I learned later on that conflicted with what I had first thought, but without that basic foundation it would have taken me much longer to grasp. I may have eventually became fed up with it and gave up on it.
In short, I can see were this could help those just venturing into theory. You've explained that it's a basic understanding and that tells people that there is more to learn. At least now they have the basic understanding to make sense of the rest... IMO

Thanks for putting forth the time and effort to help others! That's what it's all about man! -Pix

The necks don't have truss rods and with it being a 12 string to boot, it's probable to need a neck reset. I'd be sure to check the neck angle, also check the lower bout for bellying and if there is any prominent bellying to check the braces inside for tightness. Look at the bridge from the side and see if there is any tipping...

Not sure what kind of strings you're currently using but Phospher Bronze are warmer sounding strings. If you really want a more mellow tone, you may want to try some silk and steels as well. Experiment with a few different picks also. They are an important factor and are often overlooked. I'd try something heavier and a little softer material for a mellower tone.

Thanks Guys! I'll be back around the house the first next week and will post a comparison video with the S&P. I'm heading out on a fishing trip after work tomorrow so it'll have to wait a few more days smile  Thanks for all the feedback! -Pix

I was doodling around a minute ago and sketched this out real quick for the Yairi sound port.

It's a rough drawing but I think I like it... Just wondering what others thought. Any opinions or other ideas? Thanks! -Pix

Hey Dave, Welcome to the forums! I'm not familiar with Martins numbering system, so I didn't know the year but did a quick search and found this...
On Harmony they range used from $400-$700 http://reviews.harmony-central.com/revi … tring/10/1
Now on ebay it's a different story... The only one currently running is starting of at $1299 http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_tr … Categories
Hope that helps some. Hope to continue seeing you around the forums smile -Pix

dfosky is correct and 13's will probably help...

A few more things you may want to look at: Set up, A proper set up will improve the volume. Lot's of people confuse this and will say that the higher the action the louder it is but that's not the case. It's a misconception because often times with real low action the saddle doesn't have enough break angle. As long as the strings aren't hitting other frets, string height doesn't affect volume. Your break angle (the angle in which the strings bridge the saddle) determines the amount of downward pressure the strings put on the saddle. The more angle, the more downward push and the more sound transfer you get to the top, thus louder. So ,in short, you can go as low as you like as long as you have the proper amount of saddle height. 1/8 inch above the bridge is as low as I like to take mine. Anything below that and you lose volume and tone.  Also saddle material is a factor, changing to bone will transfer more vibration than your stock saddle and will increase the volume as well.
While I'm on the subject, another set up myth is that you need relief (a slight bow) in the neck. This isn't true (IMO). As long as the neck is good and straight and the frets are level, you don't need neck relief. Adding it only hurts. The more relief that's added the more you have to compensate for it by lowering the saddle... Lower action also helps improve intonation up the neck. The higher the string is the further you have to press it to fret.. So with higher action you actually end up performing "Bends" so to speak.
You can also move to a heavier pick for more volume when playing outside.   You could always add a sound port as well smile   Just some thoughts...-Pix

I really enjoyed your step-by-step photos. The sound port looks great! I can understand how the player would hear things better, but does the person in front of the guitar hear it differently? When you do your next one, could you make a before and after recording? If so, let us know your thoughts on that, please? Also I'd like to see the Yairi emblem when completed,as would others I'm sure.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! I plan on doing a comparison... It won't be anything fancy, Just something quick via webcam. That's the good thing about this alteration, for a "before sound" all you have to do is cover it up real quick smile I'll post a video link in the next couple of days. I haven't had the chance to listen it from across a room myself, but my wife describes it as being clearer and louder but sounds the same tonally.. She say's it's an improvement.-Pix

How did you decide the size of the tone-port.

Lots and Lots of reading and luthier input smile I've been planning/considering this for about 6 months.. Another forum that I frequent discusses soundport size, placement and function pretty regularly. Most of the posters are builders so I trust their input. One fellow forum member used this size, shape and placement on 2 of his Godin guitars (a Norman B20 and S&P6) He had really good results, so I choose to play it safe and use the same on mine. The template was provided by him. I'm going to do my Yairi next. It's going to be a bit more detailed. I'll work it's logo into the design. For that one I plan to mimic Tim Mcknight's sound port size and placement.

Something close to this but with the Yairi emblem instead of the M...

Well she's been strung up and I've been playing her for an hour.... WOW I Love this! I notice some slight changes in the tone. It has a touch more bass and the individual notes are more discernible. I also notice an increase in sustain. Before the guitar had a tendency to become over-driven when strummed really aggressively since it's fairly lightly built. That problem is gone. It's like adding the extra port really allowed it to breath or vibrate properly. The volume has also increased. All changes have been positive smile The largest difference is the way I hear it when playing. It's like listening from in front of one without a port. Really lets you hear every little nuance that you play! It changes the whole experience! I can see the addition of sound ports coming soon to all my other acoustics wink -Pix

Thanks man! I'm sure fatstrings is a trusting individual but to hand over his guitar....hmmm idk smile We'll find out how it works soon. I'm opening a pack of strings now wink
