Man like you I cannot hear the progression.  Did notice that they kind of lean heavy on a C E7 F G progression in some of their music and that may be a common pattern in that genre.  I would look up tunes similar and note the most common key signatures, and mess around with them to see if something clicks.

I might be that the key is fixed by the fiddle that is dominant to their music..... sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi Roger,
I too have noticed this in the far upper left corner of the active page, usually in blue, and sometimes displays "yes>?"
Just figured it was an artifact of the page scripting.

Nothing showing in scanner software and cookies are removed on browser exit, Same with either Ubuntu or Windows 7 Pro, on two different computers.  Likely not anything to be much concerned about, but different.

Thanks;

Sorry Graham, no joy on my part.... any Nurses I know in your part of the world would be waaayy too old or dead to be of any interest to you.
It's been a few years since I was there, would you believe 1962 or was it 63?  Memory is the first thing to go you know.

Phill, did you get a photo of the sunshine?!  For those of us over on this side of the pond, who get our taste of the UK from television it doesn't seem so rare.  To those of us who have traveled through a few times we know sunny days are not as common as we are led to believe.  It has come to me that the Tourism Bureau must have some control over filming schedules as the entire place seems perpetually sunny, birds in song, and flowers in bloom. Rain only falls at night when everyone is asleep, morning sidewalks are freshly washed but temperate enough to stroll to work, and snow flurries only decorate the Christmas Season.  That sound about right?  The buskers, well sometimes you just have to be just a little bit different to stand out in the crowd.

Don't know how deeply you've delved into the forums here on Chordie, but hiding down in the "stickys" in the Recording section is a section referring to the Chordie Members Musical Network.... options for working with more experienced members in getting your original tunes polished.  Kind of a mentoring thing I think, but some folks here have put together some nice music via the network, and it might be worth mentioning.

Haven't seen much action from that corner recently, but I do know that it is still active and is another resource available here on Chordie for aspiring songwriters.

Enjoyed the tune!  Lord Lucan?? (puzzled face)  For those of us on this side of the pond (or me at least) that one was unknown, so I HAD to look it up.  Feeling a little stupid, but gaps in my memory worry me.... until I realized that I was a little bit preoccupied when that news story broke.  Something about this job I was doing related to Southeast Asia, guess I was a bit disconnected and missed the news.

Now I am learned, and it all makes sense seeing as how Scotland Yard is still looking for the man after all these years.  Good luck on your search though!

Cheers for posting it.

Don't know what part of "All over" you're at, but we seem to be hanging out later than most of the population.  Must be a West Coast kind of thing.  Nice to have company though.

My crowd is kind of  a techie group so haggling over access isn't much of a problem, but we do have to deal with the other distractions of daily life, which leaves the later hours free for guitar playing & Spam Slamming here on the Chordie site.

Looking forward to your video so by all means post a link when you get it up, also checked out your poetry post and left you a comment.

Welcome;

Not bad RJ,  You might have to tweak the words a bit when you put it to music.  I'd be interested in hearing what you come up with.

Now the only reason I mention the possibility of change is that music has a timing that is fairly structured, and reading just the words, it's hard to get the feel of the meter.  Language is not as rigidly bound to a set beat, and sometimes you have to trim or lengthen a phrase to get the two to work together.

Good stuff though!

Ya bunch of Whiners!

Seriously though, some of us are envious of those few that have regular gigs that require that kind of effort and the cramps that come with.
I'm kinda with Russell though.... hired labor, comfy chair, cooler full of cold ones, and I would add a waste container within easy tossing distance.... in these parts we drink responsibly and tend not to leave the empties scattered about the landscape.

Getting old sucks! but it still beats the other option.

Now I have to get up and move.... gettin' a butt cramp from sitting here reading all these complaints.

Keep up the good work folks and enjoy it while you're able!

Welcome to the forums RJ!

You've been around for awhile, but I feel I must remind you that Chordie is not a hosting site..... so you might have a little bit of a time trying to upload your version of the tune.  Sadly it would likely be a violation of somebody's copyright to just toss it in in the songwriting section, so you'd be advised to try to get it onto something like tabs911 or somesuch.  My best advise is to do a video cover with the chords of your version on youtube and link to it from here. That way nobody's feelings get hurt and Admin doesn't have to deal with the nasty memos from the MPAA and threats of Legal action spawned from them.

Thanks for introducing yourself and by all means don't be a stranger.  There is a varied and vibrant community of like minded folks hanging around here, that I'm sure welcome your thoughts and contributions.

Welcome again & Take Care;

Well, it does seem to be working for me at this time.  There have been however several instances when Admin is doing work on the site and things have not gone as smoothly as expected.

My recommendation is to be patient and having posted your concerns, I'm confident any issues will be addressed.

Thanks for your input, and Take Care;

Well, I'll bite on this one.  I'm from up here in the timber region, and have worked not only in the wood products industry, but also as a wood worker and furniture maker and luthier.  This is only a guess, but species of trees (for a simple general term for a crop) have to be viable and profitable in order to justify expensive effort for cultivation.  Up here we mostly plant fir, hemlock, spruce, poplar, and other fairly fast growing species.  Concentrating on the ones that you can reasonably expect to harvest within your lifetime.  We replant 10 seedlings for each harvested, and lose 30% to predation, disease or drought.... Deer chew them up almost as fast as you get them in the ground.

Hardwoods like Rosewood take generations to reach harvest size.... in the case of many, in the range of several hundred years. As an example, I have a nice piece of Snakewood set aside for a mandolin fretboard. It took 80 years for the tree to grow the 2 inches of diameter to render enough "lumber" to make a half dozen fretboard slabs.  It's beautiful wood, dense and tougher than the back wall of a shooting gallery, but not practical as a crop that you might get to cut a couple thousand years from now.

Civilizations can collapse in less time than that!

That first one was nice.

The second..... Awesome, but around these parts we just call them "Stump Grinders".  First I've seen mounted on a Track-Hoe though.
Darn another great idea that I didn't have!!  Gotta really like that 100M clearance label though, at the speed the cutter is running I can easily see it tossing shards out to that distance.

Welcome to Chordie!!!

There should be no real issues with electric strings on an acoustic... like Dino I've done it.  The G string is not wound in electric sets usually, and the materials are magnetic, so you have fewer options of choosing alloys like you do with acoustic strings.  But that is a matter of personal taste.  Some folks like silk and steel strings, some prefer phosphor bronze, some like high nickel, my preference is phosphor bronze silk & flat wound which I think just get a little more out of my instrument.

Prices are all over the planet, as are opinions I'm afraid, so you might spend some time sorting out which work best for you.

Good Hunting!

And Again Welcome;
Doug

If you install Cute PDF it also installs a virtual printer labled PDF Writer.  Then you can use the regular print option on the song page, select PDF Writer as your printer and it will convert it to PDF and allow you to save a copy on your local drive.  I think you can get Cute PDF in an evaluation version that lets you try it free for awhile (like 30 days).  There may be other options out there that will also do the same.  But at least you could give it a try without having to pay for something that may not do what you are looking for.

By the way Chris, I see you have been a member for awhile and it is nice to see you posting.  Don't be  a stranger!!

Welcome to Chordie!!

If you are just starting out, I'd have to second Easybeat's recommendation for a decent acoustic.  By all means get your hands on a few and compare what feels good in your, paws & budget, and.... above all be sure to have it properly set up before you take it out of the store.  Even a really expensive guitar that is poorly set up can be a chore to progress on.

Guitar with a case, pick, capo, electronic tuner, strap, and a willingness to put in the practice (plus desire), is all it takes.  But you did come to the right forum and community to encourage you and assist you in your musical journey, whichever direction it leads.

Welcome Aboard!

For you folks on the Eastern Seaboard, batten down the hatches and keep yer powder dry!  The fireworks will wait until the weather clears up a bit.

I suspect that most shops just grab a set of 5 degree pins off the shelf and ream to fit. My Luthier is a little OCD about stuff like that (he's really into restoring vintage instruments) and owns a set of taper guages and reamers for various instruments.  Another option would be to take your guitar down and pull a pin and test fit a new one of known taper.... if it wobbles you want the other ones, and if it wobbles just a tiny bit.... they're the right ones but need to be reamed a hair.

Nice Looking Mando! and it seems like it has a good setup and tone from your description.  That little repair has no impact on the tone or structure of the instrument, so I'd say you scored!!

I always liked that classic shape and sound... slightly different from the A body but perfect for country/bluegrass music.

Have fun, and many years of pleasure from your new friend.

For the most part you can play anything you can find in standard tuning in open G tuning... the chord shapes change for the tuning, but most are either two/three fingerings or barre.  It does help to know a bit about building chords and voicings from the notes they contain, but I personally can see no reason any song couldn't be played in an open tuning.

As for why one would want to play in an open tuning all the time, unless you are really into slide guitar?  For me it would be a wash, I play barre and open chords interchangeably, so for most music there is no advantage from a difficulty standpoint in changing tuning except with a capo.

Different strokes I guess and if you are trying to get a good handle towards slide guitar as your prime genre, why not?

There are chord charts available to print for various open tunings out there, so have at it!  and Above All Have Fun!!

Whaaaat the!?!

Okay Roger, that is some nice looking Koa (even if it is on a toy guitar-wanna-be)..... checked out their website (and improved my understanding of the Portuguese language a little more, but Hablo Espanol which helps).  But dang if they don't make some purty instruments, starting at the bargain basement price of 500 Euros!  I do hope your buddy gave you a serious break on the purchase.... or at least a really really easy payment plan.

Have fun with her, and Happy NUD!
