When ordering bridge pins or just purchasing OTC you need to know if your old ones are 3 degree or 5 degree pins. It is very inportant to get the right ones. I just read a good article on the proper way to install new strings and bridge pins (don't remember the site) that also showed how to bevel the ends of the pins so the ball ends of the string don't hang up.

If you should happen to come across the article again, could you post a link? I didn't realize there were different ones. I'm not even sure I know what you mean by 3 or 5 degree pins. Thanks.

Joe

The angle of the taper varies by Manufacturer.... but here's a tip:  Gibson and a majority of the others use the 3s, Older vintage guitars and newer Martins are wearing 5 degree pins.  Compare one of yours with a sample at your local store to get the correct ones first shot.

OK Nela, is this a guessing game?  I've got 3 possibles:

Friday the 27th of June.... Starts the first weekend of "official" Summer (here in the US)

Aerosmith was the first major band to allow a free download of the entire track of one of their albums (1994)

Bill Gates stepped down as Chairman of Microsoft  (2008)

I'm kind of with Russell on this one.... it's cute, but only 8 hours on a battery?  I'm already going broke supporting the good folks at Duracell!!

It's easier to pipe everything through your DAW and edit later..... the computer is likely on anyway, and with my kind of luck the battery would just die in the middle of something exceptional... not that there's much of that quality happening lately.

Well Roger?   Haven't seen your review yet.... so how'd 58 work out for you in that kind of venue?  Or did somebody just walk off with it while unattended?

Just Curious.

Tried that Dino,  IF the e-mail address is even posted.... it usually goes to a dead end.  Filing a complaint with the vendor they are spamming for???
Yeah likely just earns them another nickel for the hit.  I'm usually on here pretty late in the evenings, and see a lot of them and just report them so they can be dealt with by one of the Mods.

Howdy Joe,

I would think it would be a bit of a step up..... played an Alvarez guitar many years ago (classical), and it was a well crafted if somewhat "plain Jane" instrument.  You know not a lot of the bling add-ons, but good wood and well finished and set up.  Gifted that one to my sister when I made the jump to steel strings & I think she still has it..... sometimes I get a hankering to pluck gut, and miss it.

How about that Jazz bar on Holodeck 2?  Could have number one set it up.... after all it's Riker's program.  Or maybe that "Pleasure" Planet that everyone goes to for R&R?  Risa?

Sorry Elizabeth, no luck on my part, even from watching the video.  Did notice on the you tube video that the guitar she's playing has 8 tuners...?

Wondering if it's some guitar shaped bazouki or somesuch???  Seems Warner Music holds the copyright, so you might be able to purchase the sheet music somewhere, but no links to anything free out there I could locate readily.

Beamer Buddy, you're giving me nightmares!  Seriously..... my little grey cells were grinding on your project the better part of last night.  My conclusion is.... yes it can be done!

I actually figured out two ways but both require cojones grandes.  The first is to get up against the largest band saw any of your friends owns.  It needs to have at least 13" of cutting height.  Slab off about 3/8" from the back and route in a channel for your wiring. Cut out the face for the additional pickup, Glue the back on after all your wires are run, and plan on refinishing the edges to match after you are done.

The second is to gut all the components out of the body and with a long 1/8" (like 18" worth) drill bit shoot a hole across the body diagonally through the jack hole, across the pot recess, and into the switch recess.  Increase sizes until you are comfortable that everything you need to run through it will fit, and then cutout for your third pickup and (hopefully you will hit your hole somewhere in that opening) AND YOU ARE GOOD TO GO!

Then again maybe I'm over thinking this.... they had to go from point A to point B, and just might have left you a passage.  Have to pull the pickups out and have a look.

As for switches, you are going to have to be a little bit creative, but this might be a good place to consider push-pull pots or at least one to tap and untap that center pickup, or drop it out of the chain completely.  Stewmac has all that stuff and lots of wiring diagrams, tutorials etc. that might be helpful.

Howdy Beamer,  Like the rails a lot as pickups go..... But then again I was also a fan of the classic Lace pickups too.

A couple of things to ponder, and not having modded any LPs perhaps someone will know for sure.... Les Pauls don't have much in the way of access to the inner workings for things like routing wiring from your center PUP.  Something to consider when you are just about to sink your plunge router into it's face..... let's see..... bondo, primer/filler, paint.... we CAN fix anything!!!

More input....  Just for grins and chuckles, lit up the tablets & checked it out a little bit deeper.  Sad news I'm afraid, tablet browsers (of most flavors) won't run add-ons, so to work around the darn ad problem, Devon has all the tablets running through a proxy that strips the ads off of the web content before it gets out of the router.  We who are more into things with "real keyboards" are left with our add-ons intact.

So that to a certain extent explains why I at least have not experienced that banner problem....

Howdy Bob, and Welcome to the Chordie Forums!

Which Tablet are you using, and OS?  I personally haven't experienced what you are describing (on 2 variants of Windows and Linux) with Chrome, Firefox, or Safari browsers, so a bit more information might be helpful.

Thanks for stopping by and calling this to our attention,

PS: I however run Ad Block Plus and Ghostery on all my browsers regardless of hardware, so it is possible that the banner you mentioned is just being filtered out and not displayed.... might be worth a try unless someone else drops by with another suggestion.

Buenos Tardes,  Man you aren''t asking much are ya? LOL  Something like 35 years later, kinda one of those needle in a haystack searches. Chances of the guitar still being in the Phoenix area are pretty small.... but then again we do have a massive membership spread all over this small planet, so miracles can happen from time to time.

If you happen to have a photo hanging around to post, someone just might recognize it.

Good Luck to you, and nice hearing from you.

Howdy and Welcome to Chordie!!  I'm sure one of our banjo playing members will chime in with something more useful, but I think you can get your F with a one finger barre at the first fret ( 1111 ) and Am at the fifth fret with three ( 7557 ).  If you find a tune that you like, over on the song page you can choose 5 string banjo for tuning, and if you click on the chord chart in the upper right corner of the chord you want to change, it will show the variant fingerings for that chord. You may then print that song with your preferred chords displayed for study and practice.

Hop into the forums, ask questions, comment as you feel, and make a few new friends here in the Chordie Community. A nicer group of folks you won't find anywhere else on the net!

Take Care, and Again Welcome!

Wow, 9 views and no comment yet?   Well try this.... assuming you are using a "wheel" mouse and a windows product, if you click the wheel it should enable the auto scroll feature. moving the mouse either up or down will increase the speed (or decrease) and clicking again will turn it off.

Sometimes it can be easier than scrolling with the wheel.... but mostly for me just an annoyance.

Hi Amy,  Grah1 is correct, the SM57 is highly directional, the SM58 is cartoid and handles off-axis better without fade off.  Like all non "active" microphones, the output increases with proximity so you wind up being able to compensate volume by either getting closer or farther away from the element.  Which is why you see lead vocalists pull the mic away from themselves when reaching for the higher register and choking up a bit when lower.... something with how much air you nave to move through your larynx to get the note and how much volume you generate while doing so.

You could use either interchangably but you would kind of have to stay put with a 57 on a stand for vocals because of the narrow window of sensitivity, the 58 will give you some latitude to move a bit.

Hope that is helpful.

Also Grah1, good little chunk of prose..... meaningful I'm sure to all of our allergy sufferers out in Chordieland..... If you hear knocking, it's not the door, just my desk getting a couple of taps as so far I have managed to "dodge that bullet".  But living where I do it's just a matter of time.

There are a lot of good vocal mics out there.... and you can go broke collecting them, or.... get your hands on a Shure SM58 which is likely the best all-around piece of kit out there.  AKG makes some nice ones, but for the money and quality and durability you really have to go some to beat Shure.

As for pricing, it does pay to shop around, but I would expect you could gather one up for around $100 USD, or less. I own two, but wouldn't part with either of them, one is wired and the other wireless. I've tried less expensive microphones, and really really spendy ones, but in the end it all comes down to the frequency response range and you want the widest possible in your budget.  Some cheaper mics sound really good in the mid range but sound like crap in the high or low .... particularly if you are thinking about recording instruments with it as well. Some consideration should be given to your vocal range also.  Try before you buy if possible, and Happy Hunting!

Sounds really good Russell.  But I think I missed the guitar part, and the vocals?  Missing tracks by some chance?  Nah, you just haven't gotten around to adding those yet.... but you've got your backing tracks for sure!

Keep making music Buddy!
