I'm thinking of getting myself a uke but really don't know anything about them. I'm looking for a reasonably cheap instrument. Any pointers on what I should buy? Should I stay away from the cheap end of the market or are they fine?

Hi Steve, I thought this would do better in this section. He's new to me but looks like he's been ramblin' a good while. I enjoyed it though.

Re: capo (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I'll join that capo lovers club, Steve. I also love the open sound. I think acoustics sound better playing open, but that's just my opinion. Mine varies from 2nd fret to 5th. Some folkie type songs sound great at the 5th fret.
Amy, that's a great description of me - way too simple. ![]()

Re: capo (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
It's just like bensonp says, Amy. With each fret you move the capo up you move up a half tone. So if I play an E major chord shape with the capo at 1st fret then the E now sounds like F; with the capo at 3rd fret E now sounds like G; 5th - A; 7th - B. And so on and everything inbetween.
I use a capo a lot because I don't have a very big range vocally.

Back in my youth I remember thinking Cozy Powell was THE MAN. Or maybe he just had a bigger kit than the rest.
Back then rock bands really started to go with HUGE drum kits.

Be nice. And take it outside, guys.
Let this be an end to it. Don't make me come back there...
Any more hostilities and this gets locked.
Now.... back to the topic....anyone?

Re: Playing a song...the whole way through (24 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Make a point of learning 1 song all the way through. Learn all the words and get it to stick in your head by playing it all the time. I was the same as you but forced myself to learn 1 song by heart - that way you don't get so embarrassed when someone hands you a guitar at a party or campfire and you can't do anything with it after telling everyone you play. I now start and end all my practices with that song, just to make sure it sticks.
P.S. I've now added a couple more to that list. It really helps with you're confidence too.

Re: How do you post tabs online (3 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Just to confirm what zguitar and Zurf say, you cannot post tab or chords to other people's songs directly to chordie. You will have to post it to another tab site; there are plenty. You can then add this to the chordie archive by following the instructions in the resourses section of the site. There are instructions in the "sticky" at the top of the songwriting section on how to post your own songs there.
Cheers.

Re: Too New To This. (13 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Strumming is basically about bashing out the rhythm of the song on your guitar. It's the rhythm that drives the song along. Here's how I usually try to explain how to get into the rhythm of a song...
Listen to the song, and with your strumming hand hit out the rythm, along with the song, on your leg or something. Like pretend drumming, but with one hand. Once you get into the rythm your hand will be bashing out a beat on your leg and you can usually pick up from that what's an down beat (strum) and what's an upbeat (strum).
It's hard to explain without showing you but hopefully you get what I mean.

Re: Is there a trick ? (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Some songs are harder to play and sing than others. Keep to simple rhythms and strum patterns to start with and it should all click into place with practice. There's never any easy answer, it's all about practice. Welcome to the journey.

Re: A strange question. "ROGER" that. (4 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
My Grandpa Bill was a railroad dispatcher. He talked on radios A LOT... to the point that when he was responding to someone while chatting on the phone he'd always use the phrase, "Roger That" ... because he used it all the time at work on the radios. To this day my family adoringly calls him "Grandpa Roger", not Grandpa Bill.
Amazing. I have a friend who's father also used radio a lot during his working life and still uses not only "roger" on the phone but also says "over" and the end of every sentence. ![]()

Re: MALCOLM MC LAREN is dead what was his main influence (3 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
I guess I'm talking from a Uk point of view. The punk scene of the US was slightly different but what it did was let kids know that they didn't have to listen to what the record companies were putting out and they could go out and do it themselves. In the same way the The Beatles showed that you didn't have to be American to write your own songs, punk showed that you didn't have to be a great musician or songwriter to go out and have fun, form bands with your mates and just do it because you can. McLaren will always be remembered for bringing us the Pistols and pushing fashion in a new direction and I for one am so glad that he did.

By bringing the Sex Pistols to the world he changed the way a whole generation thought about the music scene and in modern culture in general. It was finally OK just to do whatever you darn well pleased.

Brilliant Toney!!
In Scotland we have a fine old tradition known as "wetting the baby's head" which basically involves raising a glass or two along with family and friends in honour of the new arrival.
There will be a glass raised for little Chaz in my house tonight.
