I have been researching guitar manufacturers a bit and it truly surprised me how many brands were actually subsidiaries or “sister"  brands of other companies. What you would think of, or are often advertised as a small shop are often part of a larger conglomerate. Not that it’s a bad thing, just surprising to me.  A brief summary of what I have discovered so far.

FMIC (Fender Musical Instruments Corporation) – Brands: Fender, Squier, Guild, Gretsch, Jackson, Charvel, SWR, Tacoma, Olympia and Orpheum.

Gibson Brands – Gibson, Epiphone, Kramer, Valley Arts, Tobias, Stein Berger, Garrison, Kalamazoo, Baldwin

US Music Corp Brands – Washburn, Randall, Eden, Parker, Soundtech, Mojo, Oscar Schmidt, Lyon, Vinci

Godin brands – Godin, Seagull,Art & Lutherie, Simon & Patrick, Norman, Lapatrie

The Music Link Brands - Johnson, Recording King, The Loar, Paris Swing Co. Dell’Arte, Palatino,Lucida, Antionio Hermosa, CODA, Guardian.

Kaman Music Corp Brands – Ovation, Adama, Takamine, Hamer, Toca, Gibraltar, Gretsch Drums, LP Music, Sabian, Dixon Hardware, Genz Benz

Hanser Music Group Brands – Aria, BC Rich, Breatheaudio, Davitt & Hanser, Floyd Rose, Kustom, Michael Kelly, Nuvo, OLP Guitars, Rockfield Pickups, Stage One, Tragen Bass co

SAGA Musical Instruments – Blueridge, Gitane, Valencia, Rover, Kentucky, Anton Brenton, Mahalo, Regal, Durango, Trinity College, GoldStar, Cremona, H. Siegler, Hamano, Fullerton (Music 123 house brand)

Hey topdown, I could be mistaken here but I believe FMIC has recently acquired the Kaman music group....The article I read last week said that fender now owned ovation and Takamine ,at least, so I assume they got the whole group as well but not 100% sure.

As mentioned by Topdown I prefer the Jim Dunlop .73s to eliminate this problem. However if you have a pick that you like but it's slick and keeps slipping you can fix the problem. You can do this several ways, My 2 favorites are either to take a small drill bit and put 4-5 small holes in the pick to help with grip ot to just take a knife tip and scratch a # pattern onto each side. Both work well and will help solve your problem. Peace!

You'd need a mic as well wouldn't you?

Hey Tibernus, If you have a cam chances are it has a mic built in. All the ones I've seen do but things could be diffrent in other parts of the world... Sometimes it's not the best quality audio but it works. All I use is a Logitech Quickcam 2 ($40). Nothing fancy but it works... I plan to get a recorder in the next couple of weeks though and that will allow me to run my good mics straight into the pc. Peace!

Hey Dave, I'm not really sure how many can be online at the same time...I've done it a few times with a couple of friends but we never tried to do more than 2 people. It's not anything special but can be fun. As far as a policy for webcams..I don't really care either way. It just helps if your trying to share chords or explain a certain song or riff...That's really up to you and whoever your chatting with. I just more or less wanted to remind people that ,while chatting can be fun by itself, we can also use a video and audio link to share our music. These are free and why not use them... All that is required is a webcam and/or a mic.

I'll drop you a pm sometime soon. Peace!

Hey Russ, Yea you need a webcam but that's all.

I have a few friends that I met on the web from all over the world. Most are guitarist I met through youtube. We like to use yahoo chat alot. We can video chat and have a pc to pc call going at the same time (it's all free). This allows you to see and hear the other person. The sound quality is sometimes not the best but it's still a great way to actually meet some of the people you talk to online and even play some songs and share ideas. I do this fairly often with some friends in Canada and Japan (amongst other places).  It's really alot of fun and can be very helpfull...I was just wondering if anyone else ever did this much..?

I've had this same problem on the  e and b string. I keep my action really low and therefore it's more subseptible to the "twang" as you call it. You mentioned putting in a new saddle. Have you checked the neck properly? Contrary to popular belief a neck shouldn't be dead straight. Most styles favor a slight up bow in the neck. A neck that is too straight will cause this problem. The problem will also develop sometimes when you go to a lower gauge string and can be corrected by going back to higher gauge strings. If the neck is right and you still have this trouble and your action is equal to or higher than 4/64ths at the 12th you may need to just get the frets leveled and buffed. That is if they're not dug out too bad. If they're too bad and you have to replace those frets it shouldn't be a problem or big expence. A good reputable luthier should replace the frets in question for about $15-20 per fret. Hope some of that was helpfull...Peace!

Guitarpix, that would be great. I wrote that I contacted them, but to AVOID problems, I will send those guys the link. The song is "REAL GREAT", in particular the MELODY. It's written in Dialect and it rhymes = impossible to get cloe to the Dutch version.

Pix do you know what happens if I record an existing song, like "Lady Madonna" or "Let it Be" with a 12-string, and post it on MYSPACE. READING, SEEING and HEARING all kinds of "interpretations"it remains a mystery: LEGAL versus NON LEGAL?

Hey Doc, My understanding is...It's fine to post covers of any song or artist, as long as you don't attempt to profit from it. So you can post all the covers of songs that you want just don't attempt to sell them! I look forward to hearing something from you! Peace! - Pix

Hey Craig , Welcome to chordie! I have a 9yr old son as well and I gave him my Takamini. It fits him perfectly and has a great sound for a smaller guitar. It sounds even better plugged in. These can be found occasionally on ebay for $150-$200 in mint used condition. I'd highly recommend them. Then you can borrow it for a travel guitar yourself..lol As far as even cheaper I got my other son (7 yrs old) an Indiana Colt (I believe the name is) Indiana is a devision (lower end) of morgan monroe. I was really impressed with it ,for the money ($55). If it was me I'd wait on the baby taylor for a year or so and make sure his intrest remains. then maybe go with a big baby (15/16 scale) taylor later on. Just my 2 cents.... Peace!

Awesome.

I had thought that I was cheap-skating it, but from your response, I feel like I am right in the ballpark.

My buddy got a Seagull, and it was a lot of guitar for the money, but I wasn't crazy about the sound. I have tried a few Takamines, and may go with a G Series. (I haven't seen anything terrible about them).

You bring up some brands that I hadn't considered, or even heard of. the Guitar Center near me has some Epiphones, maybe I will check them out too.

Looks like I have some sampling to do! (This is the fun part! I might stop on the way home...)

You can see some of the ones mentioned in my signature if your interested in how they look. Most of what I have pictured there I picked up well below your price range. Even the seagull artist studio rosewood I found for only $650 new and they sell at musicians friend for about $1100.  These are the ones that I keep for myself...so obviously, they are what I consider to be great values on wonderfull instruments (for the money).

Thanks, again, Pix.

I think I want to stay in the $500-$600 range, but  will buy the write box when I find it, but I certainly won't approach the $1,000 mark, as I am married to a very frugal woman, and I enjoy sleeping indoors. smile

At the moment, I am feeling out the various options in my range, and know that when I decide, it will take some saving to make the purchase. (probably will be purchasing in the late spring, early summer.)

Please let me know if I am whistling dixie, thinking I can get a decent instrument for this amount. I am happy with my Jasmine, and am only looking to go A/E, but don't want to buy another laminated-top guitar. If I have to save more, and for a longe period, I will do that, as I say, I am in no rush.

I really appreciate everyone's input. Very informative.

Man for $500-$600 you can easily come across an excellent all solid wood acoustic. My first stop would be to look into the epiphone masterbuilts. An outstanding value! Also check out the Simon and Patricks. If you can find a showcase or pro model used I think you'd be really happy. I've picked up a couple of those and wouldn't part with them for anything! I think the most I payed for one was $300 including shipping smile Seagulls are really great also! You can even pick up a solid wood martin used for that price range! So many choices...lol Garrison guitars (highly recommended) Some yairis and alvarezs, Ibanez (they have some really great acoustic electrics IMO) And of course your Takamines. I'll stop there...lol there's just so many great ones in that range. Of course these are just ideas...Only you can decide what's right for you! Peace!

Nice, watsonchad.

Anyone have advice on pegs? I seem to be unable to get them out without scuffing up the bridge, and I find it difficult to get them in tight enough (I am always afraid I will push my hand right through the top, and end up with the pre-mature Willie Nelson look.

I have a peg winder with that little divot which is supposed to be a "peg puller" but I find it to be as useful as a football bat.

anyone?

I always put a piece of cloth between the puller and the bridge to eliminate any markings. A piece of old t-shirt does the trick well. As far as them being hard to push in...Try bending the ends of the strings to about a 45 degree angle before you put them in the holes. Doing this puts the ball out of the way making it easier to insert the pegs. It also helps to eliminate that dreaded string slippage that scares the #*^% out ya when your tunning up...lol

I do alot of buying, selling and trading of guitars both on ebay and locally. There's not many brands that I haven't tried at one time or anouther...lol Acoustic guitars at least. I don't dable too much in electrics yet. I have bought 30-35  on ebay and I've had only one bad experience. That was a warped neck on a '71 Gibson Jumbo. I was able to heat the neck and straighten it out though. Overall, I'd recommend ebay. Just don't be scarred to ask them straight out about the guitar. I usually ask 10-15 questions before a purchase and always request extra pics to be sent with close ups of my questioned areas. You're theory about finding one locally and then buying it from ebay...I'm sorry to say, really doesn't work to well. You'd be really surprised by the diffrence in tone beween the same models. While some brands are more consistent than others, there will always be diffrences even in the same models. I'm not trying to discourage you from buying it online, I just wanted to make you aware that the one you order may not sound the exact same as the one you played in the store. I'd be happy to offer up some suggestions. If you don't mind me asking, What price range are you looking at? So I'll know better what to recommend. I have a few sellers that I purchase from ,fairly regularly, that have been excellent to deal with. I'd be glad to pass on a link to their ebay stores if you'd like... Don't be scared of the little known brands! There is a tremendous amount of value to be found there if you know where to look. The key is just to ask around and research them! Also, remember electronics can always be added if you find a great deal on a straight up acoustic. Actually I prefer to mic mine instead of plugging in at all but that's just me. I don't like the  controls mounted in the side of a guitar. IMO the only hole that should be in the side of a guitar is possibly a soundport...lol Best of luck in your search!! Peace!

About THAT song by "FIXKES" I mailed to them, and I got a response.
It would be a lot more easier to use the melody and in stead of translating, take that melody and change the Dutch words by a new song, USING LYRICS you like.
They told me that they were really pleased with your comment, and in fact what can they do? Having 1 huge hit here, maybe one album = they will never cross the ocean trying to perform a few song. If some of you guys, likes this song, feel free to use the melody with YOUR lyrics.

Hey Doc! I've allready got a cover in the works! Just need to put the finish touches on the new lyrics smile I took what I could get from the translation and tried to stay with the original feel for the song. I'll be posting it on youtube when I complete it. I'll be sure to send you a link! " Festival Yeaaa..." Peace!

One thing Doc. If it's not too much trouble could you just translate a couple of words.  "ammaal"  and this little bit "Zo simpel as ik vraag het aan" I know that the first 2 words are "So simple" or "simple this way" but the rest I can't figure out and for some reason it seems important to the song...lol Thanks for any help you can offer! Peace!

Hello Oldnewbie and welcome to chordie!

I got my first guitar when I was 9. I believe I took 4 lessons and never touched it again. Well except for 1 or 2 times in my early teens just to fool around with when I was bored at home. A friend borrowed it in high school and It (supposedly) got stolen from his car. At the time I didn't really care because I had no interest whatsoever in playing and had long since givin' it up as a lost cause. So for almost 20 years I never even thought of trying to learn to play again...Then came along the fall of '06...A friend and I were driving home from work one day and he wanted to stop by the music store and look around. He had been thinking of trying to pick it up. We go in and he picks up a guitar that he had been making payments on. We go back to his house a sit on the front porch and just start messing around. Neither of us could even strum it evenly...lol Anyway we still had a ball. That evening gave me the fever. I couldn't stop thinking of trying to learn to play again. However, I didn't pursue it right then. I waited about a month to see if the urge would pass (hated to buy one and never touch it like before). Finally I could take it no longer. I bought one and the journey had begun...I was hooked! Still to this day there has not been a day that it hasn't been played for at least an hour (usually 4 or more). I even had to carry it on vacation and pay for an extra nights stay just so I wouldn't have to leave it in the hot car when we went hiking the final day...lol So I've been playing now for about 14 months. At the age of 33 it makes me sick to think of the time I wasted earlier in my life! If I would have only stuck with it when I was 9...lol

As I mentioned I'm 33yrs of age. Happily married with three sons (the youngest celebrating his 6th birthday today) I live in southeast North Carolina. I'm an active musician that works as a contractor on the side...lol Well I think that's the most I ever posted on here about myself. Welcome again to chordie! Peace!

Thanks for that 5min video you had sent me a week ago or so. I've been working on that pattern for a while, and that video made it "click". I've got it down pretty good now, but that just leads to learning... more patterns!

Jeff

That's the way it goes topdown! smile It seems like the more you learn the more you realise you don't know. So much to learn and so little time...There's a follow up lesson on the site also. Just search for travis picking and you'll find part 2. This site is full of good tutuorials. For me learning to play has been a satisfying but very humbling experience. You start to think your doing really well then you see someone ,that can really play, do his thing and you realize all over again just how much you still have to go...Always a beginner or so it seems for me. Peace!

Yup, born in 1964.  To be honest, I don't know how to begin learning finger picking so I'm looking for advice in that area too.  I have a feeling that to take the "next step" I'm going to have to parctice some things that are less "fun" than playing songs and I'm willing to do that especially now that I can always play a few sad country songs for fun.  I'm just curious what conventional wisdom, and more importantly experience has taught some of our compadres here.

Indianaguitarman.com had a few finish blems on blowout for $60 so I picked one up. I plan to wear/vintage the finish anyway and change out the pickups. It has a solid body and should perform well with some mods. I'll keep my eyes open for an s101 to try though.
