Speechless ... watching the fluid groove Jimi got into is humbling ... gives me shivers.

Hey Russell ...
I haven't commented on every one of your covers, but they're all very good renditions while showing respect to the originals. What's real obvious is that you guys are having a blast! I'm sure your practice / jam / recording sessions have become weekly highlights for you ... reward enough in itself.
Long live "Retro Buzz"!

Re: 20 and 22 fret electric necks (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
There's a lot of lead guitar tabs that go to the 17th fret. The 24-fret does give the guitarist a full four octaves, and some guitarists write music for it. The scale length (bridge -> nut) of most guitars is around 24.5". If the actual scale length isn't longer for a 24-fret, then those upper frets get very tight. PRS and Ibanez make some 24-fret guitars, as likely do others.
I love BGD's comment ... more notes to miss! ![]()

I wonder what kinds of tonewoods grow in Antarctica? If JJJ got one, he'd have to sell the bread machine to buy a freezer, so he could store his Penguin before it melted.
Too silly ... I know ...

Re: Rondo 9-String Guitar (3 replies, posted in Electric)
That's a real oddity. From what I could make out from your picture, it has 2 high E strings and 2 B's! And seeing it has a whammy bar, I'm guessing it's meant for lead only. Nice looking though.
I think you're correct, Phill ... this is for lead guitar, and I expect the "shredders" would be the target customer. According to Rondo's site, it tunes as E - A - B - E - A - D - G - B - E, so it's standard 7-string tuning, with 2 bass strings. I like that it says "Weighs only 11 pounds". A standard Les Paul is 8 lbs, so this rig would be an armload.
I just found it to be an interesting curiosity.

Richard Wright & David Gilmour "Breakthrough" London, 2002
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rnn2cV9NHA
Here's another beautiful piece by the late Richard Wright, from his 1996 solo album "Broken China". He only did one other solo album (Wet Dream, 1978), and ultimately passed away in 2008. Richard's wife suffered with mental illness (as did former band-mate Syd Barrett) and it's easy to hear Wright's heart & soul in most of his solo work. "Breakthrough" is one of 16 tracks from the album, and it's all wonderfully written music with deep feelings throughout. On a separate note, this clip really makes me want to learn how to play the cello!

I haven't been on Rondo Music's site for a while, and came across this oddity. A person would need hands like an NBA forward to play barre chords on this, and it's a multi-scale (fan fret) to boot. Seems kind of nutsy:

U.S.A., China, Japan, Korea, Indinesia. I have the whole world in my hands. Is everyone forgetting who I am?/ Lol
Thanks for the grin, JJJ ...
I just re-read this post, and had an idea. What if you put up a world map on the wall, and stuck a push-pin in it for each guitar's manufacturing origin? A second question comes to mind: is there somewhere you can buy push pins in bulk? ![]()

Here's a couple tracks from Spencer's 2016 album "Unspoken". Couldn't decide which one to share, so had to put them both up.
I love the aggression in his style, and he's a doggone fine guitarist as well. Enjoy!

Ovation are beautifully made and gorgeous sounding guitars. They have a sleek fast neck, which (unfortunately) has kept me and my big mitts from ever owning one.

Apologies to JJJ ...
My bad for hijacking this thread ... it all started with a play on words about "bass" (guitars VS fish), and away we went.
UJB: The X-ray doesn't show the polymers between the metal, which makes the whole thing work together. In raw terms, the metal replaces the bone, and the polymers replace the cartilage. Ice fishing and fly fishing (my preferred method) don't really work together. Perhaps I could cut a long trench with a chainsaw? ![]()

Re: Acoustic Guitar Tonewoods (7 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Thanks guys ... I'm equally fascinated by such things.
With our electrics, we find a whole range of tones because of the various electronics, effects, etc. The types of wood are a factor, but not as much as with acoustics. My 4 are also constructed with different woods, different sizes, etc. And as DE says, each has its own unique sound. One is no better than another ... just different. Each guitarist will choose what suits his style & tastes best.
What I like best about info like this, is that it prevents a person from being captive to a brand-name-only mentality, or falling prey to slick marketing campaigns.

Welcome to Chordie, EDG15 ...
I just spent some time on B&G's site, and they are indeed making some impressive guitars ... never heard of them until your post. Thanks! The smaller body must make it very comfortable, and the chambering would give it a unique tone, especially with the P90's in it. Very warm, I would think.

Hope to hear more from you!

Topic: Acoustic Guitar Tonewoods (7 replies, posted in Acoustic)
There are often conversations in this section about which guitars are considered top recommendations by other guitarists. Unfortunately, this will generally tend to focus on the brand name of the guitar, and not the wood it's made from, the quality of the workmanship, or the way it fits the buyer. The wood, quality, and fit are far more important than the brand.
In particular, the type of wood used has a dramatic effect on the guitar's "voice". Here's an in-depth article from last October's "Acoustic Guitar" magazine, which provides ample detail (in layman's English) about how these woods affect the sound of a guitar:

Hope it goes as well as mine did, DE. Did you mention a while ago that you've already had one done? Just had my 6-week follow up yesterday, and the doc was pleased (as am I) with how everything's progressing. Here's a screen shot of my new "hinge":

Marillion "Brave" Minehead, England, 2005
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tn9sI9wTz8
This highly atmospheric piece is the title track from Marillion's 1994 album of the same name, released in 1994. It has a very airy, Celtic feel, and Steve Hogarth's vocal abilities are captivating. Here's the story behind this beautiful concept album:
"Brave is a concept album, based on a news story Steve Hogarth heard on the radio about a girl who was taken into police custody, after being found wandering the Severn Bridge. She did not know who she was, where she came from, and refused to even speak. This inspired Hogarth to write a fictional story about this girl, and what might have led to her being on the Severn Bridge in this state."
Much of the album was recorded in a castle in France to capture suitable acoustics, with many of the album's background sounds recorded in a large cave nearby. I have this 2-CD digitally remastered edition, and it is bonafide headphone music.
