Just a song I wrote a few days ago and let sit for awhile. Now I kind of like it after a few tweeks. It’s about all the part-time songwriters who are not really beating the bushes for publicity but wouldn’t complain too much if they made it big. Heads up: there is a slight key change from verse to chorus and back. I'm just trying something new.

I Got to Be Me By  Jeff Gilpin

March 5th, 2008

Verse 1

[E]Spend the night trying to [D]write a song

I know that I can’t [A]take too long

Because in the morning I [D]still got to [B7]go to work

Verse 2

I [E]write my thoughts out [D]of my head

Some are better [A]left unsaid

But what do I [D]care I’m not a [B7]star

Chorus

[A]I’m not trying to be no [G]superstar

Don’t know [D]who you are

But I got to be [A]me [D]

[A]I’ve missed my chance at [G]dying young

Yeah, those [D]days are done

But I’ve still got to [A]be[D]

Verse 3

[E]Monday morning a[D]gain at work

From 9 to 5 with [A]cups of perk

To keep me going [D]all day [B7]long

Verse 4

[E]With a little luck and [D]motivation

I’ll get it done [A]but no vacation

Until I earn a [D]little more paid time [B7]off

Chorus

[A]I’m not trying to be no [G]superstar

Don’t know [D]who you are

But I got to be [A]me [D]

[A]I’ve missed my chance at [G]dying young

Yeah, those [D]days are done

But I’ve still got to [A]be[D]

Verse 5

[E]I’m not saying I [D]wouldn’t take

Mana from heaven, a [A]lucky break

I’ll take it if it [D]happens but won’t hold my [B7]breath

Verse 6

[E] Believe me I [D]know the odds

Not as good as the [A]lottery gods

Who cares it's still [D]fun writing my [B7]words

Chorus

[A]I’m not trying to be no [G]superstar

Don’t know [D]who you are

But I got to be [A]me [D]

[A]I’ve missed my chance at [G]dying young

Yeah, those [D]days are done

But I’ve still got to [A]be

This is just a song for all those out there who work on a job where you have to chase technology, try and keep current and how it wears on you keeping up.

Fade Away By Jeff Gilpin

March 9th, 2008

Verse 1

[D]Fade away

I don’t want to [A]fade away

Like an old coat that’s [G]put away

For a [A]rainy day

That never [D]comes [A]

Verse 2

But [D]to be fair

I don’t want to be [A]always there

In the spotlight or [G]on the air

I [A]just don’t care

For that type of [D]life

Chorus

But [G]how to [A]find the [D]middle

Somewhere be[G]tween where I’m [A]needed and I’m [Bm]not

[G]That is my [A]own private [D]riddle

To [A]not be overused or left to [G]rot

Verse 3

[D]Figure out

What betwixt and be[A]tween’s about

Maybe it’s of [G]no amount

Not [A]worth a shout

Or plea for [D]help [A]

Verse 4

[D]Grinding down

Sharpening what has [A]become round

While more falls [G]on the ground

Could [A]lose my crown

Or my [D]throne

Chorus

But [G]how to [A]find the [D]middle

Somewhere be[G]tween where I’m [A]needed and I’m [Bm]not

[G]That is my [A]own private [D]riddle

To [A]not be overused or left to [G]rot

Verse 5

[D]So I sigh

Without an [A]alibi

Must be guilty [G]so I try

To find the [A]reasons why

I seem to [D]fade [A]

Verse 6

[D]Fade away

I guess what I’m [A]trying to say

I must get stronger [G]or one day

I’ll [A]fade away

To obli[D]vion

Chorus

[G]I’ll try and [A]find that [D]middle

Where I’m [G]needed but [A]I’m not over [Bm]done

I’ll [G]try my [A]best to keep [D]focused

On [A]working hard [G]but still having [D]fun

Dan Fogelberg's Nether lands...I still like to listen to each and every song. It was a sad day for the music world when he passed away.

Thanks Reb  and Phill - I worry that either we'll all kill each other on purpose of by not fixing the problems we are causing in the environment. Either way we, including all the residence of earth, really need to get it sorted out soon.

This is the last one for the day, I swear. I wrote this yesterday but ran out of time and couldn't post it.

Thank You First By Jeff Gilpin

[D]If I [A]were to die to[G]morrow [A]

[D]I’ll be [A]satisfied with my [G]life [A]

[D]No re[A]grets no [G]sorrows [A]

[D]Made it [A]through the toil and [G]strife [A]

[Bm]Darling [A]you [G]complete me

[Bm]Helped to [A]make me to who I [G]am

[D]Helped me make it [G]through [D]the tough times with [G]you

[A]Helped me to be a [Bm]man

Chorus

[G]I couldn’t have [A]done it with[Bm]out you

By my [G]side when [A]I was at my [Bm]worst

[G]If I were to [A]thank who helped me [Bm]get here

With[G]out a doubt I would [A]have to thank you [D]first [A]

Verse 2

[D]Smooth [A]sailing lies a[G]head [A]

[D]And [A]we’re still going [G]strong [A]

[D]I can’t wait [A]for our next ad[G]venture [A]

[D]Side by [A]side where we be[G]long [A]

[Bm]I’m not [A]sure what is [G]coming

[Bm]But I tell you [A]now I have no [G]fear

[D]There is [G]nothing [D]that I can’t [G]handle

[A]So long as you are [Bm]near

Chorus

[G]I couldn’t have [A]done it with[Bm]out you

By my [G]side when [A]I was at my [Bm]worst

[G]If I were to [A]thank who helped me [Bm]get here

With[G]out a doubt I would [A]have to thank you [D]first [A]

Verse 3

[D]With the [A]best and the worst be[G]hind us [A]

[D]We are now [A]careworn and care[G]free [A]

[D]I wouldn’t [A]have it any [G]different [A]

[D]With my best [A]friend beside of [G]me [A]

[Bm]I get [A]misty eyed [G]remembering

[Bm]With all [A]that we’ve been [G]through

[D]Looking [G]back [D]I’m able to [G]laugh

[A]Only because I’m still with [Bm]you

Chorus

[G]I couldn’t have [A]done it with[Bm]out you

By my [G]side when [A]I was at my [Bm]worst

[G]If I were to [A]thank who helped me [Bm]get here

With[G]out a doubt I would [A]have to thank you [Bm]first

This is just a song I’ve been working on this week and finally finished. I had this tune in my head but couldn’t figure out what words to put to it so I got to thinking about places I’ve been to and wanted to see again.

The Rocking Chair Blues By Jeff Gilpin

March 2nd 2008

Verse 1

[E7]I wanna go back to Charleston

[E7]And stay by the sea

[E7]Last time that I was there

[E7]You should’ve seen me

[A]Walking on the beaches

[A]Staying out all night

[E7]Howling at the moon

[E7]Until it dropped out of sight

[B7]Had myself a good time

[A]Feeling just great

[E7]Now I wanna head back down again

[E7]But I have to wait [A]

Verse 2

[E7]Wanna go back to Nebraska

[E7]Where I lived way back when

[E7]Last time that I was there

[E7]…Where should I begin

[A]Quite a lot of eateries

[A]Friendly people too

[E7]They work hard and they play

[E7]There’s quite a lot to do

[B7]I wonder if the Old Market

[A]Is still a hopping spot

[E7]I guess I should go check and see

[E7]If it is or is not [A]

Verse 3

[E7]It’s been a year or three

[E7]Since I been back home

[E7]The place that I was born in

[E7]And left before too long

[A]The valley in the mountains

[A]Where the ridge is kind of blue

[E7]I hear it’s occupied today

[E7]By those who have moved to

[B7]Relocated there from the

[A]Places where they’re from

[E7]So it’s not like I remembered

[E7]From my childhood that's long done [A]

Verse 4

[E7]I have always had a hankering

[E7]To live in mountains tall

[E7]Not live like a mountain man

[E7]But I still have heard the call

[A]Where there’re trees and mountain meadows

[A]As far as you can see

[E7]Only oceans of forest

[E7]To look back at you and me

[B7]And they’re not saying nothing

[A]Or honking from their cars

[E7]Just swaying in that mountain air

[E7]I hope it’s in the stars [A]

Verse 5

[E7]For now my only travels

[E7]Will be back and forth to job

[E7]Trading in my lifetime

[E7]And hoping I don’t rob

[A]Too much of my youthfulness

[A]And become contrary

[E7]I’m hoping I don’t waste myself

[E7]Until I’m in misery

[B7]I’m sure before too long

[A]I’ll punch my final clock

[E7]Go out to the time and place

[E7]Where life will start to rock [E7sus4]

…in the chair that is [E7sus4]

…that rocking chair [E7]

This is just another frustration with the world song. With fuel prices going up there seems to be a very slow response in coming up with clean alternatives. There is also so much global poverty being ignored which breeds hate towards the rich and feeds the wars that really only get the rich richer and send the common folk off to kill each other.

The Land of Our Fathers By Jeff Gilpin

March 2nd, 2008

Verse 1

The[Em] future is a coming

[A]Whether we want it to or not

[D]So we best get [A]ready

And [Em]take care of what we got

[D]Or [Em]we’ll be breathing poison

[A]Drinking poison too

And the [D]babies of our [A]babies

Will [Em]have it worse than you

[A]Have it [D]worse than [Em]you [D]

Chorus

The [G]land of our fathers

That [D]they thought would be great

Like a [A]tractor-trailer on a twisting path

That [Em]seems to accelerate

Towards a [G]very bad ending

[D]Further on down the road

[A]We should turn back now

Be[D]fore we [A]lose this precious [Em]load [D]

Verse 2

The [Em]killing of our brothers

Who’ve [A]known only poverty

And [D]have had their minds [A]twisted

Into [Em]hating you and me

[D]While we’re [Em]currently enjoying

The [A]spoils of our gain

We [D]squander our re[A]sources

Until [Em]nothing else remains

[A]Will [D]nothing else re[Em]main [D]

Chorus

The [G]land of our fathers

That [D]they thought would be great

Like a [A]tractor-trailer on a twisting path

That [Em]seems to accelerate

Towards a [G]very bad ending

[D]Further on down the road

[A]We should turn back now

Be[D]fore we [A]lose this precious [Em]load [D]

Verse 3

It [Em]seem pretty simple

[A]We need to fix what’s broke

[D]But freewill and [A]greediness

[Em]Seem to sink the boat

[D]And [Em]all these corporate interests

[A]Do not want a change

They [D]like business as [A]usual

Even [Em]though it’s a losing game

[A]Such a [D]losing [Em]game [D]

Chorus

The [G]land of our fathers

That [D]they thought would be great

Like a [A]tractor-trailer on a twisting path

That [Em]seems to accelerate

Towards a [G]very bad ending

[D]Further on down the road

[A]We should turn back now

Be[D]fore we [A]lose this precious [Em]load [D]

Verse 4

I [Em]wish it were that easy

But it [A]is not easy at all

The [D]few that have the [A]power

Seem to [Em]want the world to fall

[D]So [Em]long as their lives

In the [A]short term stay the same

They [D]will not budge or [A]get on board

And [Em]that is just a shame

[A]Just a [D]crying [Em]shame [D]

Chorus

The [G]land of our fathers

That [D]they thought would be great

Like a [A]tractor-trailer on a twisting path

That [Em]seems to accelerate

Towards a [G]very bad ending

[D]Further on down the road

[A]We should turn back now

Be[D]fore we [A]lose this precious [G]load [D] [Em]

I cannot remember a time I was not thinking about music in some form or have a tune of my own floating around in my head. Being an energetic and enthusiastic young child I would spend my days, much to my mother’s malcontent, singing just about anything you could think of at the top of my lungs and getting on her very last nerve, which by the way managed to really increase my young vocabulary. This is a song about that and how it was not such a bad problem to have after all.

From My Heart By Jeff Gilpin

February 26th, 2008

Chorus

You [D]know I could have [A]sworn

That on the [D]day that I was [A]born

I didn't [D]cry a song was [A]torn

From my [Bm]heart

From my [G]heart

From my [A]heart

Verse 1

[Bm]I've been singing since I could re[D]member

Not [G]always good but [D]always full of [A]joy

[Bm]Being shushed since I was a [D]kinder

For [G]being such a loud little [A]boy

Chorus

Be[D]fore too [A]long

I'm be [D]humming another [A]song

Because the [D]music was [A]strong

In my [Bm]heart

In my [G]heart

In my [A]heart

Verse 2

[Bm]There've been days that weren't so [D]happy

[G]Felt like my [D]heart had broke in[A]to

[Bm]But even that didn't [D]stop me

[G]Still singing songs when I was [A]blue

Chorus

I'd [D]sing when I was [A]sad

In[D]stead of getting [A]mad

[D]Music was what I [A]had

In my [Bm]heart

In my [G]heart

In my [A]heart

Verse 3

[Bm]I never knew quite what [D]I had

A [G]power that would [D]always get me [A]through

[Bm]Nothing ever could hurt [D]me bad

[G]Because I always [A]knew

Chorus

[D]To sing my [A]song

And I'd [D]keep on going [A]strong

Now the [D]music's lived so [A]long

In my [Bm]heart

In my [G]heart

In my [A]heart

Verse 4

[Bm]Even now I still can [D]get away

And [G]try to funnel [D]out what I [A]can

[Bm]Capture what's floating in my [D]head today

Like [G]listening to my private [A]band

Chorus

And they [D]play my [A]song

As I [D]try and play a[A]long

Singing [D]loud and singing [A]strong

Straight from the [Bm]heart

From my [G]heart

With all my [A]heart [D]

This is just a song about looking to what’s right for inspiration to live by in your life. I kept it kind of generic because what is right is a little unique for everyone so you all can figure out what is right for you.

So True By Jeff Gilpin

February 25th, 2008

Verse 1

[Em]I cannot de[G]ny it

[Em]I cannot [G]hide it

[C]All the things you [Em]do

[C]The essence that is [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

[Em]People talk a[G]bout

[Em]What they’re all a[G]bout

But [C]never ever [Em]you

You [C]don’t explain what’s [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

Chorus

[C]Not a [D]statement but a [G]fact

[C]You are never [D]ever half[Em]way

[C]With your [D]dignity in[G]tact

[C]You’ll always stay the way you [Em]stay [G]

Every [D]day

Verse 3

[Em]If I could emu[G]late

[Em]One I think is [G]great

[C]My thoughts go right [Em]to

[C]Without a pause to [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

Verse 4

When [Em]doubt is in my [G]mind

I [Em]think of you and [G]find

The [C]courage to see me [Em]through

I [C]try and think like [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

Chorus

[C]Not a [D]statement but a [G]fact

[C]You are never [D]ever half[Em]way

[C]With your [D]dignity in[G]tact

[C]You’ll always stay the way you [Em]stay [G]

Every [D]day

Verse 5

[Em]On my toughest [G]day

When [Em]everything’s in my [G]way

[C]You get me [Em]through

[C]I shine because of [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

Verse 6

I’ll [Em]keep on going [G]strong

With the [Em]strength to carry [G]on

The [C]least that I can [Em]do

[C]Live my life like [Em]you [G]

So [D]true

Chorus

[C]Not a [D]statement but a [G]fact

[C]You are never [D]ever half[Em]way

[C]With your [D]dignity in[G]tact

[C]You’ll always stay the way you [Em]stay [G]

Every [D]day

Hey Phil and Noel - Thanks for your comments

Phil - I keep seeing my wife pop up in my songs too.
Noel - I thought about keeping it a little more even, verses to chorus I mean, but the story wasn't like that so I let the story dictate the structure of the song which is why the ratio of verses between chorses is not the same through out the song. That was my idea anyways but that is just the critique I'm looking for and think we need more of here so thanks for that.

The story which I've written many songs on already of how I was fortunate enough to meet and marry my wife has always seemed a bit like a fairy tale to me so I decided to write a fairy tale/story song about it. I cut it short…no really…but even so it is still a very long song so to help I kept the chords easy, kind of folky and predictable. I left out all the ups and down that are part of the process where you figure out the one who was meant for you just because my fingers would get tired if I made the song any longer, just know there is more to the story than is told here.

Once Upon a Time By Jeff Gilpin

February 24th, 2008

Verse 1

[Em]Onceupon a [D]time

[C]In two far off [D]lands

A [Em]fabled journey [D]started

By a [C]woman [D]and a [Em]man

Verse 2

[Em]She was filled with [D]questions

Her [C]mind a butter [D]churn

[Em]So she wandered [D]from her home

To [C]see what [D]she could [Em]learn

Verse 3

[Em]Not so filled [D]up with thoughts

[C]He happy in his [D]life

[Em]Until one day to [D]his surprise

He [C]saw his [D]parent’s [Em]strife

Verse 4

[Em]They split up and [D]set him free

[C]Not far from a [D]man

So [Em]he went off to [D]wander

A[C]cross the [D]open [Em]land

Chorus

[C]She discovered [D]wonders

While [C]he discovered [Em]war

[C]She went off to [D]learn more

[C]He had no clue what was in [D]store [D7]

Verse 5

[Em]He learned about [D]people

Both the [C]good and the [D]bad

The [Em]good didn’t have it as [D]good as they thought

And the [C]bad [D]weren’t so [Em]sad

Verse 6

While [Em]she got more questions than [D]answers

[C]Made her just a bit more [D]confused

She [Em]learned there was so much [D]out there

And [C]she would [D]have to [Em]choose

Verse 7

So [Em]she reigned her[D]self in

[C]Eventually settled [D]down

But [Em]in the end could [D]not decide

Where [C]answers [D]could be [Em]found

Chorus

[C]She questioned all the [D]wonders

He [C]questioned how people [Em]live

[C]She kept looking for [D]answers

[C]He gave all he could [D]give[D7]

Verse 8

[Em]Like fairy tales from [D]times of old

They [C]found each other one [D]day

While [Em]she was still looked for [D]answers

[C]He could [D]not look a[Em]way

Verse 9

He [Em]finally found all that was [D]good

And [C]perhaps just a little [D]bad

But [Em]he could not answer her [D]questions

[C]Only meager [D]answers he [Em]had

Verse 10

[Em]She left without all her [D]answers

And [C]even more questions re[D]mained

When you [Em]love and your love [D]goes away

[C]Will the [D]feelings stay the [Em]same

Chorus

[C]She questioned why she was [D]leaving

He [C]questioned why he let her [Em]go

[C]She wondered if she’d [D]see him again

[C]He wondered why it him hurt [D]so[D7]

Verse 11

[Em]He went away to [D]far off lands

[C]Thinking he would forget her [D]soon

But [Em]she remained in [D]spite of the pain

That [C]kept his [D]life in [Em]gloom

Verse 12

[Em]She set aside her [D]questions

[C]Tried to get on with [D]life

[Em]While her parents [D]tried to find a man

For [C]whom she would [D]make a good [Em]wife

Verse 13

A [Em]written corres[D]pondence

That [C]eventually found its [D]way

Re[Em]ignited what still [D]smoldered

A re[C]union [D]soon to be one [Em]day

Chorus

[C]He asked her a [D]question

She [C]answered as best she [Em]could

[C]She said she was his if he came for [D]her

[C]All he could say was that he [D]would [D7]

Verse 14

[Em]Once upon a [D]time

[C]In a land far a[D]way

The [Em]woman and man were [D]married

And she’s still [C]answering her [D]questions to this [C]day [Em]

So with weather in the area and icy streets around this morning and predicted all day into the rush hour commute tonight I have time to sit and pop a song out about it, along with some chores around the house. The Eb+ I play like xx1003 just because I have trouble reaching the 4th fret on the high E but both chords sound okay to me so I can live with it.

[Em]Knock some things out of the [Eb+]way

[C]Might as well with the

[D]Weekend drawing [G]near [D]

[Em]I’m sure that I can [Eb+]find

[Em]Some time to wrap my [Eb+]mind

[C]Around all that

[D]I hold so [G]dear

Chorus

[C]Another day [D]filled to over[G]flowing

[C]Another day [D]filled with opportune[Em]ty

[C]Another day the [D]world just keeps on [G]rolling

[C]Rolling on to endless possibili[D]ties

Thanks Daddy - Dreaming and writting about it sure keeps me off the streets.

Just a song about places I’ve been, things I’ve seen, places I still want to go, people I want to meet and what I’m going to do in the meantime.

Meandering By Jeff Gilpin

February, 20th 2008

Verse 1

[A7]Traveling round this crazy world

[A7]The sights that I have seen

Some [A7]filled with piss and vinegar

[A7]Some just filled with mean

[D]But some filled with kindness

[D]Some are with filled blindness

And it [E]seemed [D]

Some fell in be[A7]tween

Verse 2

[A7]I’ve seen a spitting camel

[A7]Forced into giving rides

And [A7]monkey’s at this drive through zoo

Who’d [A7]try to get inside

[D]Tear up upholstery

[D]Not how it’s supposed to be

But [E]true [D]

The things those monkeys would [A7]do

Verse 3

[A7]There still are many places

[A7]Where I have yet to go

[A7]Like the top and bottom of the world

[A7]I hope they still got snow

[D]I hear it’s receding

[D]And ice also retreating

Hope not [E]yet [D]

Before we all get [A7]wet

Verse 4

[A7]A couple other places

That I [A7]also want to see

New [A7]Zealand and Australia

Sure do [A7]sound like fun to me

[D]Yeah I’m sure they’re lovely

[D]If you like to sight see

But in the [E]end [D]

I want to make some [A7]friends

Verse 5

[A7]Just like all over Europe

[A7]To include all the UK

[A7]I’d head out tomorrow

But [A7]work is in the way

[D]But before too long

[D]If I am still strong

I’m [E]on [D]

For a trip across the [A7]pond

Verse 6

[A7]For now I have to play and work

[A7]In the suburbs of DC

[A7]Where I know I have lots to do

From the [A7]District to the trees

[D]I prefer the mountains

[D]To lakes or oceans

But I don’t [E]mind [D]

Anywhere is [A7]fine

Thanks Daddy - I wish mine were that close. It's a real chore for them both to get home but we love it when they visit.

I'll keep your son in my prayers.

What is his name? (none of my business, but it feels better to make a prayer personal).

Hey Larry,

His name is Timothy and thanks for the prayers for him.

Yep, that's a fact. My youngest, the girl, is 22 now and she left this past year with her bf who is not far too from my age which was way scary but once the kids reach that age...sigh...they have to figure it out on their own. My son is over in the desert dodging bullets so he's not doing me any favors either. I'm hoping he's real good at dodging.
