Just got my new Ibanez RG, just looking for some tips on playing metal-style guitar, especially on artificial harmonics, riffs, and solo stuff.  What kind scales and arpeggios should I be looking at? I already asked about sweep picking, and I'm going to practice that.  Thanks!

Got started by learning some basic chords from my pastor, learned strumming on my own.  After that everything was on my own.  It's more work, but it seems more rewarding when you learn something.

Don't bother too much about others styles.  Use your own and the main thing is to enjoy what you are doing.

I would, but I need to learn some different methods in order to play faster.

I'm looking at this pedal because it has everything from an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer to a Boss Metal Zone.  I read that some of the effects aren't very similar to the real thing, but this doesn't really matter to me since I've never used any of the real ones anyway.  Anyone use one of these, or any sort of Digitech pedal?

I replied a long time ago to this topic...my list has varied slightly
Top five
1.  Eric Johnson
2.  Eric Clapton
3.  SRV
4.  Hendrix
5.  Yngwie Malmsteen

Next five
6.  Steve Vai
7.  Rory Gallagher
8.  Jose Feliciano
9.  Trace Bundy
10. Angus Young

There are a ton of others that deserve to be in the top 10 as well, but these are some of the ones I like best

That's not true, as the majority of people don't attend any sort of church.  If they do it's only on the Holidays like Christmas and Easter.

My first guitar ever was a Rogue 101B dreadnought in black, an $80 deal.  I'm still playing it three years later and love it.  I'll continue playing it until I can afford a Martin or something.  My first electric was a Danelectro Hodad 12-string, but I'm sad to say she's gone to a new home now as my new Ibanez RG is on its way.  I'm planning on keeping this Ibanez for quite some time.

I've played a Fender American Strat, a Gibson Les Paul Studio, both of which are $1000+ instruments.  I also played a $400 Ibanez, and I thought that it had the best sound and playability of the three.

I don't know anything about correct techniques when it comes to picking.  I downpick and am learning how to alternate pick and tremolo pick.  But what it sweep picking and how do you do it?

I like the chords you have, Em and Asus2 work well together.

I had some buzzing going on with my Rogue, and it wasn't the strings, but the tuners were loose.  A screwdriver fixed that, and it sounds great again.

Malmsteen's heavier bottom?

Must be the reason he has trouble getting into those leather pants these days ;-)

I have no religion, yet I go to church and play guitar every Sunday.  I write praise songs, and most of the music I play is Christian Rock.  Why? Because Christianity, true Christianity, is not a religion.  Religion is something you do that makes you look good-I go to church every Sunday, I pay my dues every month, I volunteer at every extra church function, look at me and how good I am.  That being said, church, regardless of denomination, has influenced many different singers, not only Christian artists.  Johnny Cash (who became a Christian later on in life) started out his music career singing gospel.  On a slightly different note, As I Lay Dying, one of the most popular metal bands around today, is a Christian band (yes, Christian metal exists.  Not all metal is "Worship the devil!" music).  I read an interview with them and you'd be surprised at their morals and convictions.  Just because their style of music is aggressive doesn't mean anything about what they believe.  To answer your question, what is sung in church varies, but in many Christian churches, everything from old hymns with and organ to modern Christian rock with overdriven electric guitars, bass, and drums is used.  The common theme in the music throughout any true Christian church? Worshiping Jesus Christ our Savior.  Some denominations don't use instruments, which I find strange because the book of Psalms says to "praise the Lord with stringed instruments; praise Him with harp and lyre".  I guess nowadays that means guitars and bass smile

I'm ordering my new RG here very soon, maybe tonight, and I'm ordering an extra set of strings.  The only electric strings I've ever tried were Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys, 9-46.  I liked them, but I found bends I little tougher to do on the top strings.  I'm looking now at a set of Dean-Markley Yngwie Malmsteen 8-46's.  I like the idea of extra lights on top, with a slightly heavier bottom.  Anyone use these?

I'm not getting this one anymore-I'm getting an RG solid body electric and sticking with my good ol' Rogue dreadnought for now.  The RG also has a flamed maple top....

It varies from day to day and what kind of mood I'm in.  My top few faves are Styx, Beatles, Eagles, Third Day, Skillet, and Steven Curtis Chapman (not really a band, but whatever)

That's what I'm going to do, only the guitar will be inside the gigbag inside the box.

Bubble wrap the entire instrument and consider boxing the box, with bubble wrap inbetween the boxes. You'll have a customer for life and word will get out about your great care for 'sacred 'musical instruments.  It costs a little bit more but it's worth it. That's how I do it.....

I'm shipping the guitar inside it's gigbag though....but I will make sure to pad the box.

Got that covered, thanks.  Any other preps regarding the instrument itself?

I'm getting a guitar box to ship it in.  I need to loosen the strings, anything else before I ship it out?

I was looking at an RG with a whammy...but I've been told that a fixed bridge is a lot easier to deal with, and that whammy's on cheaper models aren't quite as good as their more expensive cousins.

Have you had the chance to hear what they sound like?  I went to SamAsh a few weeks ago to try the RG series out and wasnt happy with the pickups on certain models ... I tried out the RG370DX with the INF pickups and loved it ... that's going to be my next buy

Either way, good luck on it and hope you like it!

Thanks.
