Re: Epiphone Acoustic Guitars (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I have posted this before in other threads but....
Last year my wife bought me an Epi PR-4E A/E for my birthday. She knows NOTHING of guitars ( I don't know much myself) but she got it for me in a package. She had help from the guitar guy at Best Buy and she was looking for something cheap. The whole package with the guitar, amp, strap, DVD, tuner and picks was 199.99.
I am very happy with my wife's serendipitous gift. The guitar is very nice looking and the sound is great. It has a shallower body so it is not as full as a dreadnought but when I go play with my brother (who owns a Gibson dreadnought that he bought for 1k 20 years ago) he would rather play mine than his. I would rather play mine than his.
I am sure there are better guitars out there but I am very, very happy with my cheap Epi.

I like the wildkat. I had an opportunity to try a similar one at a guitar shop. Action was nice and it sounded great. It was made by Samik (?) the company that makes many of the Epi's. Loved the Bigsby too. the only reason why I put it back is it was too much like playing my Epi acoustic/electric. I want something different.

Isn't that a waste of time and cost then? I would not want to go into a non-binding arbitration situation as it can take forever or, if you are an employer, it allows you to rule by fiat. If the employees then went to arbitration over, lets say a contract or employee issue, the employer, even though he may have been found on the wrong end of the decision, can impose what he wants.
We have Non-binding arbitration where I am employed due to a stupid decision by the firefighters association years ago. A few years ago I was denied my step increase because the chief heard a rumor. Though the rumor was untrue and the investigation found the rumor was baseless he decided to deny me my increase anyway. I grieved it and lost. I did not take it to arbitration because the chief, after he lost, would have denied the decision anyway.
My point is that you have binding arbitration or you don't arbitrate. Often contracts require arbitration in lieu of lawsuits. If the arbitration is not binding how does one who is wronged get their opportunity to right the wrong?
If you have non-binding arbitration and don't like the outcome, you can always take your issue to the courts (which is where you can still go). Since the arbiters are generally paid by the employer, there is an inherent conflict of interest and bias with them. Would you really prefer to arbitrate a dispute with your employer and be forced to abide by the decision of the arbiter when the arbiter is being payed by your employer, too?
Binding arbitration offers no appeal. It is putting all of your eggs in one basket, and hoping the fox in the hen house is honest about counting them fairly. I would *never* deny myself the option of the courts.
Why arbitrate then? In my book if one is going to go the route then why not just go to court? Again: Arbitration, especially non-binding arbitration is merely a waste of time. I realize many contracts require arbitration in-lieu of tort but I feel that is a way for a party to extend an issue an indefinite amount of time until the other party goes away.
Arbitration is supposed to be a way of dealing with a legal issue without tying up the courts time yet it has been bastardized as a tool to waste a person's time. Non-binding arbitration is one more way to avoid judgement even if you are wrong as it allows you, if you are the "guilty" party, to continue to tie up the other parties money and time until you get the decision that fits you.
How is that right?
I know, I know...I the legal sense there is no right or wrong just winners or losers. Perhaps the legal profession should get back to right and wrong.

I developed, years ago, the ability to tune out everything that I want to and listen to what I need to. I think it goes with living in a firehouse for 1/3 of my time and having to jump at the sound of the tones. Then coming home after a long shift and having to sleep for a few hours during the day. Also having children inured me to chatter and noise if I wanted to read.

Re: Redefining "Healthy" (17 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I found out a few years ago I was never going to look like Adonis. I'm 6-4 and, right now, I weigh 230 (but most of that weight is from not being able to do much since the injury).
Anyhoo a few years ago I got on a pretty good exercise program and stuck with it for a few years until my back started acting up. At my best I weighed about 200 and had some muscle but I was by no means "ripped". But...I could kick my son's ass on the hill runs (he played water polo and swam about 8 miles a day) and I was able to stay with the firefighting hand crews as a line EMT. Most of those guys were half my age and I surprised the first one I was with as they thought they were going to hike me into the ground and laugh at the old man.
My feeling since then is much like yours: I might not look good but I will still be in shape.
I don't drink much alcohol but I do like junk food and soda and do not want to change.

Re: Concert (2 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I had to chuckle at your observation of older people at the concert. In '99 I was working as a medic for a company out of San Berdoo. We did stand-by's for concerts, auto and m/c racing, etc...
I worked a concert at Glen Helen. The line up was Dokken, Slaughter, Cinderella and Poison. I was partnered with a young (about 21) EMT. I was the Medic on the crew. As we pulled into Glen Helen I told him, "You are going to see a few things here: Older women in spandex that still look good and older women in spandex that should have left it in the closet. We will also see alot of guys my age with huge beer bellies and goatees."
We checked in and went to our spot. I watched my partner look at the crowd and after about ten minutes he started laughing. He asked how I knew. He had no clue who any of the bands were. I told him that every one here was trying to re-live their high school days.
The bands? Slaughter was...Slaughter. Dokken was rusty as they had just gotten back together and Dokken's voice needed some practice. Cinderalla kicked arse and Poison...Well I was too busy treating old guys who were drunk and decided to fight during the Poison show.

Re: Very very new beginner, 15 years old, PLEASE HELP! (11 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Not really an "Insider" so to speak but I have opinions (like every one else).
The best types of wood change from person to person. Depends on what kind of sound you expect form a guitar will have the most bearing on what type of wood you want your guitar to be made of.
Again the best types depend on your preferences. Many prefer Fender Stratocasters for their electrics and others prefer Gibson Les Paul's. Then there are those who will only use/buy American Strats or Les Paul's and those who are happy with foreign made Strats and Les Pauls. Much depends on how much you are willing to spend or how much is in your budget. I am in the market for an electric and have played many at music stores. I found that the best guitars for me and my budget are Schecter's and Laguna's. Inexpensive (the ones I am interested in), they feel right and sound right for what I need.
Look for a guitar that "speaks" to you. One that fits you. do research. Play a cart load of them while looking. There are many very expensive guitars out there that, while might look good on your wall, may just do that: Stay on the wall because it does not have the tone, action or even playability (sic?) that you are looking for. My guitar is an Epiphone PR-4G that came in a 200$ package my wife bought for my birthday. She had no idea what to get, it was cheap and looked good to her. I got lucky. I like the sound and when I play with my brother he would rather play mine than his 20 year old, $1000 dollar Gibson dreadnought.
Dont' know about Bass guitars.
Major brands:
Gibson
Fender
Schecter (They also make the Daisy Rock guitars which are sized for females)
Ibanez
Epiphone ( A subsidiary of Gibson)
Squire ( A subsidiary of Fender. Both Epi and Squire tend to be less expensive but that does not mean inferior)
Ovation
PRS
Ernie Ball
Grestch
Etc...
Again, don't rely on the brand of guitar but which one fits you the best. There are many off-brands (or not so well known) that are just as good or better than a major brands.
Get opinions if you are in the market for a guitar but the best way to find out which one you want the most is to play a great number of them before you buy. You might be surprised and find out that a $200 guitar speaks to you better than a $1000 guitar.

Re: Nerves (12 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
The first time I walked into a music store to try a guitar I was nervous and did not play anything. There were a few others in there playing and I was intimidated. Second time I tried a Squire and when I hooked it into the amp there was a loud screech of feedback. I played for about two minutes and walked out from embarrassment.
Since I have been in a few stores, picked the weapon of my choice, hooked up to an amp (after making sure some child did not turn the volume to 11) and just played. If they don't like my music they will ask me to stop. I know enough to play some songs and last time I was in GC there was a dad in there with his kid. Kid was looking at guitars and dad watched me butcher Pink Floyd.

I feel I am an OK beginner. I do rhythm ok and middling lead on the songs I learn. I went to my bro's house a few months ago and we played for awhile. He has played for years off and on. A few weeks later we were all at a family function and I told my bro's wife that my nephew (who is self-taught and a phenomenal guitar player) makes me feel like a noob. she said Eric mentioned that I played well. Made me feel good to hear.

One thing helped me lose about 40 pounds in 6 months back in '05, along with swimming 2500 yards and running 3.3 miles on alternating days:
Long time ago a famous person was asked how he stayed so thin. I believe it was Satchel Paige the great Negro League pitcher. He told the person he had grown up poor and always hungry. As he made his money he could eat anything he wanted but he ALWAYS stopped when he was no longer hungry.
I did this myself. I ate whatever I wanted but never got full. I stopped eating as soon as I was not hungry.

Re: Monthly accountability message (20 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
What is your body fat percentage? How do you feel other than hungry? Are you tired all the time or have more energy? What is your daily caloric intake?
Interesting to know the answers to those questions.
Some thoughts:
Maybe you are in an exercise rut. What do you do? Jogging? Biking? High impact or low? Try swimming. Best cardio you can do and burns the heck out of fat. If you are just jogging do something else if you can. If you exercise the same every day your body gets used to it. Change it up and use other muscles. This will help overall fitness and may jump your metabolism as you must now re-build muscles that are not used to working.
If you are feeling healthy or your health has improved then don't worry about the weight so much. some people carry more weight. You might have also turned a lot of fat into muscle as mentioned before. Muscle weighs much more than fat. How do you look, compared to before, in the mirror? More solid?
Every one that tries to lose weight will go through this. If it is not an issue with your endocrine system then avoid the scale for awhile and just keep on task. Evey time you eat right and exercise you are doing good so don't get discouraged. If it is an endocrine issue then staying the course will still help you along with treatment.
Sounds like your plan is solid. Maybe you need to change it up a bit but dont let a few pounds get you down if your health is showing positive improvements.
Last thought: Cheat a bit every now and then.
Good luck.

Re: Feedback problems (6 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
This may sound like a flip answer but it is not: Have you tried lowering the volume of the amp? When I got my A/E with the amp I had no experience with amps. The first time I used it I was getting a lot of feedback. After fiddling with the controls on the amp and the guitar I realized that if I kept the amp volume low and controlled the volume with the guitar I had no feedback.

Re: How do I know when to strum?? (10 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Once you get the strumming patterns down-and it will come- you can add your own little things to the song. Perhaps a bass beat to certain notes or such.
Additionally: You don't have to strum exactly like the song. You can change the pattern a bit to fit how you feel the song can be played.
