While I know sheep are common throughout the UK, here in the U.S. we do our very best to keep sheep away from people who choose to live in Las Vegas.

Border Collies. I'm sure that you would pass it, but given how smart Border Collies are, I think their masters should have to take a test before getting one. Yours is especially beautiful.

No softer pick without using air. I probably should lighten up, but I've been told to lighten up so many ti es by so many people for so long that it is difficult to accept that it is actually sound advice for once. The irony is deafening.

Extra light strings sound tinny to me. Ok for electrivs, but for acoustic, I prefer as fat of a string as your fingers can stand.

Re: Faster strumming (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Get a metronome. It will be your best friend and worst enemy at the same time. Play the rhythm you want at some moderate to slow speed. It doesn't matter what it is, but I'm going to use 80 beats per minute (bpm) as an example. That's a nice slow-to-moderate speed.
So, play the strum pattern you want EXACTLY RIGHT at that speed. If you can't get the strum pattern EXACTLY RIGHT at that speed, slow down until you do get it exactly right. Practice at that speed for as long as it takes for the strum pattern to become second nature. Then speed up the metronome. For example, if you started it at 80 bpm, bump it up to 90. Strum it a few times, and you'll have it exactly right and realize that 90 bpm is ridiculous and why did Zurf ever tell you to bump it up so little. Then take it to 140 bpm. It'll stink. You'll hate it. You'll want to throw your pick out the window. Instead, slow it back down to 90 bpm where you have it exactly right. Get it exactly right a few times at 90 bpm, then bump it to 100, and then 120, and so on.
The idea isn't to practice it at speed UNTIL you get it right, because you never will. The idea is to practice it right at as slow of a speed as you have to go to get it right, and then get the speed up. In other words, practice it so that you can't get it wrong, rather than having to work to get it right.
I wish I was wise enough to take my own advice. It's really good.

I'm liking the John Pearse strings. I put the first set on Boomer, and they sound pretty good. Lows are a little muddy, but the highs and middle make up for it.

Zurf you just wrote a whopper of a country song there. All you have to do is put some B chords in there to make it the perfect song.
At least Russell, King of the Mutants, hasn't revoked my B chord amnesty yet this week. (Long live the king!)

What a frustrating week. I need to change my perspective to be pleased that I have these frustrations, because it means I am employed and there are too many people right now who aren't.
Still, the kids are grumps, they busted the ottoman that matches our sofa and so now I have to give up a Saturday that was going to be for fishing to repair it, work is hectic, vacation time is building and building and I'm having trouble taking any so I'll lose some at the close of the accounting year, my home network was hacked and I had to reset it, I still have no idea who hacked it but now they'll have to figure out all new passcodes and firewall settings, my printer broke and had to be replaced, the kid's printer broke and it's not getting replaced, my guitar strings keep breaking, Tiny's got her rattle back, and now my fishing raft blew out a seam before I even got it wet this year. I just spent $230 getting the parts I needed to repair the floor and now I'm going to have spend another $160 to get the parts to repair the seams and spend another Saturday doing the repairs, it's been raining so much that the rivers are all too high for safe fishing from a canoe. My raft is also infested with ants. Probably my canoe too because they're stored near to one another. I hate ants. Also I got one of those "we need to talk" letters from my financial planner. That can't be good. And it's only the third Monday. I don't want to know what the next two Mondays this week have in store.
I've got a low-down dirty case of the first world problem blues. I need to go fret about my 401(k) at a Nordstroms while playing my guitar that's never been in a pawn shop.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Topic: Percussion, heavy bass emphasis, and blown strings (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I've been playing around with much more percussive strumming lately. Topdown calls it a "chop". I like that characterization. Anyway, in addition, I've also been really pounding the snot out of bass notes trying to keep a steady bass line. It's working to get what I want. We had some dancers at my last campfire session, which was really cool. Best complement I could get was that I was keeping a steady enough bass line and tempo for people to dance.
Anyway, with this percussivenes and bass emphasis, I'm blowing out a lot of strings lately. I'm doing it on both my Guild and my Breedlove. I play .012 (they call it medium light I think) Elixir nanowebs on the Guild and Ernie Ball Earthwood mediums (.013) on the Breedlove.
So, to reduce the cost of $13 or $7 every time a string goes poink, is there anything I can do? It's not always the same strings, so I don't think there are any burrs on the guitars themselves. Or is buying strings in bulk going to be the cost of the style of music I am learning to play? If so, I may need to rethink the Elixirs. Would lighter strings help? I think I'd give up volume if I did that. The Breedlove is an OM size, so I like the booming volume of .013s on it.
Suggestions, considerations, recommendations, and sarcastic nonsense welcomed.

Re: John Fogerty (6 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Zguitar, that would have been a great show. I've really liked Mellencamp for a long time, back to when he was Cougar. I respect him both for being willing to take the advice of those who he thought knew more about the music business than he did, then when he found the advice too distasteful to continue he changed his stage name back to his family name at the risk of being a laughing stock (and he was for a little while). I respect that he did that. I respect that he's been so involved with Farm Aid and other charitable activities, putting his money where his mouth is. But I also really, really like his music. I was listening to some cuts from Uh-huh just last night while I was cutting grass and had to catch myself. I was using headphones and had it cranked and when it got to the line "Forget all about that macho **** and learn how to play guitar," I very nearly yelled it along with the music. Only at the last moment did I recall that no one else could hear what I was hearing and I'd look like a total nut case.
As far as Fogerty, did you know he's Country? He is. My mom loved CCR and Fogerty after they broke up. I enjoyed CCR and Fogerty as well. I recognized them as Rock, but mom only liked Country music, so by definition (Mom's dictionary), any music she liked was Country. That means Neil Young, James Taylor, Fogerty, and Jimmie Buffett were all Country. Even Schubert symphonies were Country to Mom.
Is he under-rated? I don't know. Probably not. He's recognized everywhere. His songs are known everywhere. He's had recognition. What I think it's safe to say is that Springsteen is over-rated, at least so far as I'm concerned. I'm not impressed with his playing, his voice, or his song-writing. That's not fair. I'm impressed by anyone's ability to write songs. So I am impressed by his song-writing. But I think there are a number of song-writers on this forum who are more skilled and artistic than Springsteen is.

It's still a possibility for me, though a slim one. I'll be out of town the next weekend for a jam in West Virginia. And I'll be in the Finger Lakes in mid-August. So, it's darned slim. I'd do it in a heartbeat were I a bachelor, but I'm not and my kids would get awful bored with all that car time. To the contrary, I love long drives, especially through new country. I've never been to the Finger Lakes, and it's been on my "want to see" list for a very, very long time. It's also on my "want to taste" list for all the wineries.
