25Frankster, fellow chordian. I really like to help you, because I am a collector, better I was until 2006. I had real luck to buy those pearls. BUT: I 've got a nasty car accident back in 2000, started again working, got a nice amount of money, which helped me a lot of course.
Today, I still receive $$$$, but being an independent, I was "punished" by social security and taxes.
I am surfing a lot on the internet since I "had" to stop working as MD. So, all possible information about guitars I can find, I put it right here on CHORDIE. I have a topic about (it takes a lot of time to look it up and to compare) "cheap(er) acoustic and electric guitars.. I am living in Belgium, EUROPE, and at the moment our € is very high: we get 1400$ for 1000€. Advise: did you check the price of your dream guitar on eBay? I had fantastic opportunities to buy a few collectors guitars, play and collect. More and more people start to collect guitars. I remember the people laughing because you can not play on 2 guitars at the same time. I realise more and more that I was blessed to have this opportunity, and I really would love that everybody has such an opportunity. It is always better to save more money and get you a nice guitar, than buying one immediately. I don't know much about Larrivee, but I will look on a few sites as well on eBay.

reddevil, as I wrote go to the site I advised, it is at first a little bit complicated, but you will see that everybody here is 100% correct.
Some chords are better, I mean easier if you play them in different "style".
See Jerome: he gives you exactly the same chords, but the finger positions are different.
So you have to figure out what position suits you the best.
Jerome's chords are easier to change faster than my chords, but I call this more a skill. Try the different ways for your chords in barre, and than you can make conclusions.

You mentioned the EPIPHONE SG CLASSIC.
I had the occasion to play an Epiphone SG classic (almost the cheapest) and to play an Epiphone SG
more specific an Epiphone G-400 Electric Guitar. The price of the SG special is 100$ cheaper, but my conclusion or opinion was: the EPIPHONE SPECIAL beats THE EPIPHONE SG G-400:. The Special had a far better tonality than the, what I call the Epiphone SG standard.
But having so many guitars, I have all different sounds.
The conclusion playing my guitars, especially in the acoustic segment is: there are songs "asking" to be played by a Martin dreadnought, and using a Martin for another song doesn't feel good, but using a Gibson SJ-200 that song sounds 100% different. The GIBSON SJ-200 Montana gold (special edition) is as far as I can see, the BEST ACOUSTIC I ever saw, and heard.

Altex, again my deep respect and admiration. I don't care about your "play"level, I care about the fact that, well, you did it.
BUT nosy as I am, what guitar brand you use? How long do you play, the longer the better, but playing for an audience: a kick!!!
You wrote something about other buskers, so what did people passing there? Did they stay long enough to listen? Don't worry, I've been almost everywhere, and I saw buskers in almost every big city. Sometimes the police removed them, that's why I asked that question. Did you play acoustic? electric? I have seen older buskers, playing real bad (but probably thinking they were Clapton) and young players, who were real talented.
Please keep me informed. I just bought in a music store a BOSS BR 600, but I still don't have a clue how it works. My intention was to record own songs, and put them on myspace, because you can hear very good songs, and I don't have a video camera, so I hope I can tell you soon: I HAVE A SONG ON MYSPACE.

I used maybe wrong phrases, but why is PHISH so popular?
Is their success thanks top their COVERS? Or is it something else

SGinCYQX, fellow chordian: this is one of the reasons why it matters, we have now a list of famous, guitar players but this word (famous) is not the right word.
I prefer "famous in what they play.)
But just like you, I am a huge fan of Peter Green, I have almost every single song of Mark Knopfler, and I adore BB King. ATTENTION: if you listen to JJ CALE, you hear Mark Knopfler.
BB inspired a lot of people to play the guitar. How old he might be, (born in 1925) and still active as guitar player. I wish I was like that man. SGinCYQX (where did you get this nick name?) and all chordians: he was voted as the 3th best guitar player in the world, by Rolling Stone magazine:
1/ Jimi Hendrix
2/ Duane Allman and followed by
4) Eric Clapton
5) Robert Johnson
6) Chuck Berry.
You can find this information : google: BB King: Wikipedia.
What kind of guitar you have and what style do you play? I think you are a blues man.
I looked where you live, and this was always one of my dreams: living in Canada.
I really should appreciate if you mail me about New Foundland, and what is needed to move to Canada.

KramL, where are you from?
Did you know that in the prechordian time, I played pretty well at that time, but today I can really tell you, without shame, that I play a lot of chords, that I switch on time, and the switching from A to D to C, in a 1 movement was easy. The problem was that I was afraid to play in front of 2-3 men.
I was shy and always thinking that the songs I played "sucked". Now I don't care anymore to play in front of people.
WHY: the combination of me and chordie. I like to write topics asking  others what they think about something. You will find almost a chordian who will give you an answer. As example: I am lost, in my search to a certain chord: you will get a decent answer.
I am since years surfing on the web, and I never encountered a forum like this.
We, better players advise youngsters, and youngsters are asking and giving their advise. I never saw a site like this. I have TIME, TIME... due to a car crash, and being here was the best thing that happened to me. More motivation, more devotion, more practising, WITHOUT A FEELING, TO BE ALONE. Nobody attacks nobody, if government leaders" should be on this site, well they would see what peace is.

Well Boot, that's almost exactly what I expected.
I just put chords I can play. But almost all types of chords I wrote down, I can play. Most of them "flawless", others, like even the F-chord, are more difficult. More, I play maybe twice the number of chords I mentionned, because I use, more in acoustic, chords I didn't know what it was.
Like Aadd6, played in the Fleetwood Mac song: "man of the world", it is = to A, but you take alsop the thin E-string. And probably, I will really count the chords I play without problems.
QUESTION: HOW DO YOU PLAY A SPECIAL CHORD because some chords, even transposed are almost not to play ( I don't have long fingers: ANOTHER REASON WHY HENDRIX could play difficult chords, because he had real long fingers.) Do you know PAGANINI, a man who played and composed on a violin: even today there are pieces written by Paganini, using finger settings in such a way, that can not be played. Here it was due to a rare disease, you can see it probably on the web, and the name of the disease was: SYNDROME OF MARFAN, a lack of a protein. It is a genetic disorder of the connective tissue characterized by disproportionately long limbs, long thin fingers, a relatively tall stature, and a predisposition to cardiovascular abnormalities, specifically those affecting the heart valves and aorta. Just because of the XXXL size fingers and being a musician, I heard or read somewhere that they could almost take an "octave".

Here some examples for the chords
C in barre: finger on the eight fret, and your fingers placed like you take the E chord.
like this:
x   x   x   x   x   x (fret 7)
o   o   o   o   o   o (finger setting on fret 8 and o stands for finger)
x   x   x   o   x   x  fret 9
x   o   o   x   x   x  fret 10
x   x   x   x   x   x  fret 11
To take the D chord in barre, you do EXACTLY THE SAME, POSITION OF FINGERS BUT now on fret 10, where your finger covers the strings on the 10th fret, followed by the same position of your other fingers: an E chord, just under your finger covering fret 10
G chord, where you cover with your finger the 3th fret and again E like in the other examples. You can do the same for A: finger pushing on the 5th fret, an again the E chord.
I really hope I could help but I will give you a site, where you can find a LOT of chords, you get the standard chord for G, but you will notice normal chords and what they call split-chords.
You will also see, on your screen after you "click" on let's say the A-chord, there is a get it: ckick on it and you will see the chord. BUT you will see on top A, and lower six little things; in fact giving you the opportunity to see 6 different ways to play the A chord.
www.all-guitar-chords.com a very good site to learn chords

Hello markdrago
What kind of music is "boring" you.
What is, in your eyes the level you have playing guitar, includes: music school, guitar lessons? Or did you play, better started to play as I did: teaching yourself to play? I play now for about 30 years
and I did it all by myself. As you can see in my nickname: gitaar (=guitar) doc (Medical Doctor) and Phil= the first part of my name. Because of my job, it was really difficult for me to have time to learn. I was blessed because due to circumstances, I was able to have a real nice collection, I play AND collect. What is your music style? Also, what kind of guitar(s) you have: acoustic? electric?
Very important is always "learn how to play" and doing this in such a way that you don't get bored. I recognise a lot of myself in your topic, "getting bored" in my case because I wanted to play so badly and it was always today. Here are a lot of good songs, I really think that you can find some interesting songs. But again "what is your kind of music, what kind of guitar do you have, and don't give it up.

ALTEX, my chordian friend. Did you see the T-shirts, if you wear both our "chordian" T-shirt, they will even spot you more. AND ONE IMPORTANT THING I SHOULD DO: selling at the same time T-shirts. But that's one for ROGER.
Well, what can I say: super. You need "stress" and you have a victory by playing in public.
I think a lot of us like to do this, even I do.
Sooner or later, my "guitar friend" are going to France, over Germany, the mountains to end in STRAATSBURG with 2 guitars , and there is a reality that we start playing just on a rest stop, or probably at a lake there. Nothing is confirmed yet. MY "BIGGES3 problem was and maybe is" still a fear that people hate what we do. On the other hand, thanks to my car crash and the fact that I don't work (last news was very bad and hard), made me stronger, more assertive, and I have learned to say (finally) NO. Thanks to my disability, the pain, I am stronger.
So I wanted to know if there were problems with a police officer? CONTINUE to play. Your 76$ will raise, the more you and your friend learn.

SGinCYQX: I don't have a clue that it matters, because you are maybe the best player.
No, I am just looking for a guitar player, I prefer in a band, and not like "the guitar man" and band.
You have a few types: "speed" guitar players, like MALMSTEEN, impossible to follow that guy, BONAMASSA too, too fast.
I am convinced, as I wrote, that in clubs, like in Memphis, New Orleans, there are some evenings, unbelievable players. I am just asking how guitar players, I saw in a club, remain a lot in that circle of bars. Are there still "talent scouts"?

I had once an ovation, from the line, better the models coming out once a year since maybe 20 years. The model I had, had a headstock for "electric" and "acoustic" strings. THE BIGGEST problem was, problems with the electronics. After 4 times of bringing her in, she played electro-acoustic again for maybe 2 days, with the money I spend there to repair the guitar, I could buy an APPLAUSE.
It was a bad guitar probably made on a Monday, but I could change this one for a Martin D-15

Again: practise a lot.
Never CROSS THE BORDER, by playing, or trying to play: if you start and 15 minutes later, you don't like to play: STOP PLAYING.
Notice that your fingers are starting to hurt, caused by the fingersettings, taking a chord.
We all passed this stage, and it is absolutely noyhing to panic: the top your fingers, will getting "thicker"', but even I have to stop because of pain like still almost all of us.
There are 2 options: you can go to a guitar teacher, or you start playing on your own. I am NOT a guitar "God", but I play pretty good, and I got a lot of information and support here on this site. You can ask anything you want, there are NPO STUPID answers.
Important: a lot of young people are to greedy, and I hope that you accept the fact that you improve your skils only by picking up your guitar, and play. Take the major chords maybe first, but if you are able to play other chords it's a good thing. If you start to feel bad on a chord, take another. A nice way to the path of glory is: play along with a CD of bands you like. I remember me buying VIDEOS and BOOKS, 15 -20 years ago, at that time there was no internet, so look for nice sites.
As Roger sais: what kind of guitar do you have right now?

In Europe, we do not have a Country and Western culture. So I don't know a lot about those guys.
I agree the only person well known here is/was Johnny Cash. I was in 2003 for 2 days in NASHVILLE, and I have to say it was GREAT, as European, NOT having as I told, a culture like that.
I just know that I recieved "flyers" where the sister of J.CASH organised trips in Nashville, visting places like the ol' opry, but I had no time, one of the reasons was: TOO much Bourbon-Cola, the evening before. If you ask here in Europe a WHISKY COLA, you get 1-2 fingers Whisky and the rest is Cola. There, you get 2 fingers Cola, and the rest is Whisky. But Nashville is one of the most clean, nicest towns I saw in the US. At noon in a bar: a bunch of people, 30-40 persons, and one guy playing country on his acoustic guitar, it get's better, after he finished playing, the next act was an OLD (at least 70-75 year old) couple, a HE and a SHE, playing together songs, and asking the audience what they wanted to hear. WE DON'T HAVE SUCH beautiful events here.
Did you had the opportunity to listen to the song "wild thing" by Chip Taylor. I also love those names, like CHIP, CHUCK: what about those names? real like JOHN, BILL, or not

I did post some time ago a similar topic. I know they stopped playing. BUT PHISH is a fascinating phenomenon. They have a huge amount of songs, and they started as a small obscure group, having a tremendous number of fans at the end. There are similarities with the GRATEFUL DEAD.
But I am more interested in the fact that they played "Dark Side of the Moon" entirely. ARE THEIR COVERS REAL THAT GOOD?
__________________________________________________________________________________

GITAARDOCPHIL SAIS: I DON'T LIKE PHISHing, SPAM AND SPOOF

I know, a lot of discussions are going about the best band, BEATLES or STONES
or about JIMI HENDRIX, & SRV.
But I wanted to have some information about who is considered "TODAY" as the best guitar player.
I did see DVD's with the G3, SATRIANI, VAI and people like MALMSTEEN, JOHNSON and others, like STEVE LUKATHER.
Derek Trucks and Adrian Legg, but I don't know 1 single thing about these guys, except that Trucks seems to be the youngest "voted" guitar player.
Of course, we are subjective, but try to be OBJECTIVE. There are great guitarists you don't like because you don't like the music.
MY LIST (??)
- Billy Gibbons, ZZ-TOP. The group has only 3 members, (the funny thing is the name of the drummer, named BEARD, the only member without a beard) Why do I like GIBBONS, because he plays the guitar alone, but when you see them live, you have the impression that there are hidden behind the curtain, 2 more players. ( Maybe it is like that?)
- John Fogerty: not a brilliant guitar player, but full of passion, and also ALONE, on LIVE CCR albums, see also NEIL YOUNG, same category.
We have the "turbo players" like Johnson, Malmsteen. Also Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, but I stick more on players like KEITH RICHARDS. What I saw in 2003 in New Orleans, in a club, beats everything, a real genious. Other item: HOW DO THEY FIND GREAT PLAYERS: Scout, luck?
I saw a "similar topic" by jamiey1, difference: My QUESTION IS NOW in 2007

Nadine2, did you disappear? I missed you and glad to C U back, I mailed you 20 weeks ago, but there was a problem Daemon Failure.
What you write is SO true. There are a few thousand chords, BUT I think that a lot of them are more common playing piano. Never expected to get an answer on this topic, because you have to try to play in front of your PC, or looking for chords, = BRAIN GYMNASTICS, whatever you claim, YOU NEED TO THINK, just take chords you knew but lost.
Daddycool: I didn't count them either, and I swear, it took me hours. But the only way out this CHORD WOOD, "one finger on another place gives a complete different sound. E versus Em, same root, you just remove 1 finger from E : there you go. That's what I like about Zurf how he describes "the essence", but I should add the chords you see on top of my topic, even than there is a difficulty: Cm, Gm, no problem in barré. Since almost every CHORDIAN can play "Hotel California" I add the fact that this is in fact more complicated, because of F# and Bm.
To come back on your answer Nadine, I can play probably a lot more chords without knowing it, but I gave it up to count them. Most used chords are still (I try to rank them in: easy and a lot used chords first. E   C   D   G   A   F(is more difficult) followed by Em  Am  A7  B7  C7  D7.)
Practise more the ones not written here.

I don't know if this one is difficult or not, but I wanted to see HOW MANY CHORDS YOU CAN PLAY?

I start with the chords I can play pretty good, I have to admit that I play a lot of chords, but a lot of them remain without a name, so here I go:

A     B     C     D     E     F     G
A7   B7   C7    D7   E7   F7    G7  (E7, A7 can be played different)
Am  Bm  Cm   Dm  Em  Fm   Gm

Those are the chords that are used a lot in songs. More difficult chords? Cm  Bm   Fm   Gm

Other chords:
Ab  A#   Bb  B#   Cb   C#    Eb  E#  Db   D#  Fb  F#  Gb  G#.

But here we start to having problems because of (an example) 2 names for 1 chord: Db = C#
Than there are dim chords like Cdim  Ddim (I use this one a lot finger setting x  x  x  o  x  o on the first fret. Edim (like Cdim, but 2nd fret) Fdim (same 3th fret) Adim=Cdim.
I can also play at least 20 more, looking at a chord diagram, chords like Aadd6.
I think I can play, and control about 60-70 chords, and I am able to play about 50 different chords without a problem.
So do you have an idea about the number of chords you can play?
Just curiosity, and if I get answers, from skilled players, in addition to give information and using your skill to help. Purpose: players who just started. DO NOT PANIC by reading this, before you know, and this happens a lot to me, you play chords without problems. It is better to practise 30 minutes  day, than spending hours, because THAT will kill your enthusiasm: overexposure.

It is amazing how celebrities look without make-up.
Did you also notice that when a couple sleeps together in 1 bed, you will always see the man's "torso", but never the woman. Do they use a special L-shaped "cover".
I am surfing a lot, so sometimes I encounter weird sites.
This isn't weird but real.
It must take hours to "paint those people"and you will NEVER , or almost never recognise them. More, without make-up, it is really good to see the consequences of plastic surgery. THOSE surgeons should be suspended for the rest of their lifes if you see the results.
Michael Jackson, in his thriller time, was an attractive young man.
In the USA, they will have a lawsuit, for almost nothing. I even heard on the news a few years ago, that a gynaecologist was prosecuted 10 years after he used "a forceps" to help a baby out of his mama. At the age of 10, his results on school were not that great, and the court's verdict was: guilty. I can not imagine this.

They are both great, they play "similar songs", but for me SRV had more potential. He wasn't running away in "substances" but in his music. He is one of the greatest guitar player I know, and I discovered him not long before he died. BUT SRV (Jimi too, but a lot of his music didn't reach the audience, because of his ACT) doesn't play the blues, but HE IS the blues.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS  SGinCYQX, that's the kind of guitar I am referring, amongst others.
As you have noticed, I am a fanatic topic writer.
One of my topics is going about CHEAP to MORE EXPENSIVE, in fact, a guitar for every wallet. I am busy surfing a lot of hours to "try to contribute" some interesting information. I have the time, since I had to stop working as MD, due to an accident. I hope that some of my topics are helpful, like my topic, as told, concerning $$$ for ELECTRIC and the same for ACOUSTIC guitars.
Do you know, if you want to have the "real thing" a GIBSON SG (some, maybe a lot are "kicking" on a brand, like GIBSON or FENDER), while and this is for BOOTLEGER, there are probably better guitars. About the GIBSON SG, no options, no lacquer finish, just wood and humbuckers, well I just saw a price: brandnew on www.musiciansfriend.com for 579.99$

GITAARDOCPHIL SAIS: BEWARE OF THE ATTACK OF THE CLONES

1) WHO ARE THE CHORDIANS?
A peaceful community, who adores to play music, who work hard to buy an instrument (guitar 90%)
a/ CLOSE to your dream guitar, like a GIBSON LP STUDIO in stead of a STANDARD.
b/ HAVING a less expensive guitar: - too much in a hurry.
                                                    - financial difficult.
Some of us have to work real hard, and have to sacrifice other nice things, like holidays, making decisions that can be a problem if you have wife and kids.
Some people are so in a rush to buy a guitar, or follow the fact: Like I MUST HAVE A LES PAUL, and they end up with an Epiphone Les Paul, which is a great guitar, but if they should wait a little time, more money. I saw it 100 times, when still working as a DOC. No $$ but the biggest television, and they all had cellular phones, but couldn't pay the rent. (I even asked no $$$, being aware of their situation). I was blessed, concerning my instruments, like "trading"I got my first "big" guitar, a Martin HD-28, from an addict who sold his guitar, to have money. I could get this guitar a lot cheaper, just by giving him what he wanted, but I gave him 33% more. I am not a saint, not Santa Claus but I hate receiving money from people with difficulties, guilty or innocent.
c/ Having the opportunity ($$$$) to buy a guitar without problems.
EVERYBODY HAS ONE THING IN COMMON: THE LOVE FOR YOUR INSTRUMENT AND MUSIC.

2) Who are the DESTROYERS
- People like Keith Moon, destroying almost all his drums.
- People (MUSICIANS) who are rich, young and thinking they can do everything, like beating fans, forgetting that it is thanks to them that they sold a lot, and destroying everything they meet like hotel rooms: just look at their age. I really feel sorry for a girl like Britney Spears, who's life was stipulated by her parents, forgetting she was a kid. Do me a favour and watch on the internet how they look WITHOUT MAKE-UP, you will NOT AT ALL recognise a lot of them, self proclaimed BEAUTIES.
- ALSO Guitar manufacturers: Gibson in Memphis, where they make hollow bodies, test and examine every guitar. I have NO PROBLEM with this, a quality product remains a quality product. But if they notice that the "guitar finish" is not perfect, or that the sound isn't good enough: DESTROY!!! They could easily sell these guitars, using another, but referring to the original, name. 33% = on 100 guitars, they DESTROY about 30 guitars.
________________________________________________________________________________

GITAARDOCPHIL SAIS: I LOVE TO DESTROY BUT THINK BEFORE DOING IT.
