I always tell people to learn from a teacher and think for yourself. eventualy everyone discovers something that a teacher hasn't shown them but inbetween those discoveries you can learn alot from a teacher and that leads to more discoveries. I look at it this way, by the end of it all, ateacher should teach you everything he knows but he shouldn't have taught you everything you know.

Batal,

Contrary to popular myth, electric guitar is not an advanced instrument that you move on to after learning the basics on an accustic. Each one has it's own technique and sound. As far as picks go, if you don't feel comfortable with one then dont use one. Buddy guy plays almost all electric and he doesn't use a pick. I think every guitarist should have an electric, an accustic and maybe even a hollow body electric. If you get an electric bite the bullet and get a good amp. a 40 - 100 watt fender or peavy amp will do just fine.

    Good Luck !!!!!

I can't stand Fender guitars!!!! I picked up my friends Strat and it felt like I was holding a toy. Sure the action was decent but it had very little ressonance. Honestly I had to play around so much with the reverb on his amp that I hardly wanted to play the thing. It sounded so thin. Fender makessuch a good bass (Fender Jazz Bass), that I couldn't believe how much this sucked. Many a great guitarist play exclusivly Fenders and I don't know how they get such a great sound but I will stick to a Les Paul through a Fender Bassman.

Fred,

I'm going to tell you a secret. It is a very closely gaurded secret that a very few people kow. The notes are the same on every guitar electric or accustic. They are in the same spot, chords are made the same way, the scales are all the same. The only thing different is the feel and the sound. I never went to the learn on an accustic then you can "move up" to an electric school and I'm glad I didn't. When I was learnning I had an electric at home and the coffee shop I hung out at had accustics that you could barrow to play there so I learnned on both at the same time. That being said, the best video I've seen (people are gonna laugh at me) is the one advertised on TV Estabon (is that how you spell it?). My buddies sister got it and I learnned a few things from it too. Plus it comes with a pretty decent accustic/electric guitar.

Jimmy,

Yes!!! That is a very nice price for lessons. Are they worth it? Really depends on how good a teacher you have and how good a student you are. Honestly nobody is so good that they can't learn from somebody els. I come from a University town (Carbondale Il) and a lot of people around there make a big thing out of who you studied under. Good luck and remember you can never know it all so always welcome the chance to learn from someone!

Rich,

First off, it's great that you are learnning to make music!!!! By now I'm sure someone here has told you how to short cut them, how to eliminate them by transposeing the song and of course practice. Well the truth is...they are all very correct! each method has it's draw backs but I suggest using each one.

1) Simplified (cheat) chords are very appropriate in certain situations in some songs, especially if you are picking runs between chords which I do alot in country and blues.

2) Being able to transpose a song is a good skill to have. The vocalist may need the key of the song changed, you may be playing with a harp blower who has a limited variety of harmonicas, there are lots of situations where this comes in handy.

3)Barr chords were among some of the first chords I learnned. I didn't know they were hard because nobody bothered to tell me. My point is that you gutted it out and mastered the other chords so don't wuss out on these they are no harder that the others just different.

Good luck to you Rich!!!

When I first started, I didn't have a real teacher. All I had was a chord chart and a few people around to tell me if I was doing it right or not. I just wanted to be able to play a few songs to get girls. After many months of frustration I learnned a few tricks to make my chords go smooth.

1) Adjust the action on your guitar. Unless you are playing slide (or violin) you really want your strings pretty close to the fretboard. It will make it easier to make and hold the chords. It will also make your lead work faster.

2) Check your neck thickness. If it's too thick for comfort you might want to trade in for another axe with a thinner and narrower neck. If you have a classical guitar then I'm afraid you are pretty limited because they make them like that for a particular reason.

3) Try a lighter gauge string. If you are useing 12s try 10s. But keep in mind that this will also raise your action because the skinnier strings will have more space between them and the board.

4) lastly is long painful practice.

I like this song. I was playing it with a kind of John Lee Hooker feel to it and thought it was great.

[SONG]
{t:BUILT LIKE A WOMAN}
{st:MICHAEL WRIGHT}

Well she's [A]built like a woman
[D] But she fights just like a m[A]an
yeah she's [D]built like a woman
[D7] But she brawls just like a m[A]an
If I [E]get my arms a[E7]round her
[D7] Gonna love her all I can

Well she sits down at the pool hall
Drinkin whisky all night long
Yeah she hangs out at the pool hall
Drinkin that whisky all night long
If I get my arms around her
I better not do her wrong
[/SONG]

Not a deep work but a fun little bit I came up with jamming with my buddies out on my porch earlier today.Between two guitar solos and a harmonica solo this little two verse song ran almost 15 minutes. the nieghborhood kids liked it though.

The youngins will probably disagree but for the best sound you should use tube amps and record analauge (that has to be mispelled) and then at the very end durring the mix down transfer to digital. You'll get the kind of sound that straight cold steril(Man I can't spell) digital just cant provide. And be very carefull that your sound proofing just holds the sound in without deadening it.

Sorry that I post so much but I'm a music geek inbetween bands so i really don't have much els to do. anyway I have a rather odd question for my online mentors at chordie.

In one of my past bands Raksasha the singer and myself co wrote alot of songs. He couldn't play any instruments so anytime he would write a song he would sing it to me and I would find the right chords and we would take it from there. The problem is that he doesn't feel I should have any of the songwriting credit and shouldn't perform the songs. He cant really stop me I geuss but I want to do what is ethiclly right. What do you guys think?

My band recently broke up and now that the crying is over I'm ready to hit it again. I'm looking for a guitarist to share lead/rythem/vocals with me, a bassist, drummer and maybe keyboardist. You don't need lot's of experience but should be able to handle a simple 3-6 chord rock song. You must be able to practice at least once a week together and often on your own. I like doing both covers and origionals and nobody's idea for songs is stupid as far as I'm concerned. So stop playing with yourself and play with a band!!!

There is really no big mystery. Chords and scales all have the same notes on any instrument. Just practice and have fun. When I play bass most of my bass lines are actually more like lead guitar riffs just a little more rythmic.

Gret lyrics!!!! I plan on useing it as a punk song sometime if it's ok with you. Really like your word-play

on this one and with only three chords a person can do so many different things with it. Luv it!!!!!

{LONELY ROAD}

{american chaos theory}

[E] Take me on your magick journey
Lead me to your secret lair
Let me throw my arms around you
Wrap me up inside your hair
[A] [B]It's a lonely [E]road
[A] [B]It's a lonely [E]road

After that all the verses are pretty much the same

Of all the creatures that lay inside you
Let me be the one to hide you
Let me lay my soul beside you
Let me trail along behind you
   It's a lonely road
   It's a lonely road

Death you are the perfect lover
You treat me like my very mother
You won't forsake me or leave me alone
You only want to bring me home
   It's a lonely road
   It's a lonely road

You can hear the song @ http://www.myspace.com/americanchaostheoryband
along with a couple others that I wrote.
When I wrote it I meant for it to be more of a blues song. At one of our shows me and the keyboardist Buddy were trippin pretty hard and I sang that little intro ( not origionally part of the song) and he started playing it relly fast like that. The audience seemed to really dig it so we stared doing it like that. Let me know if you like it or even if you don't. This was recorded at the same session as paradise so unfortunatly it's pretty crude sounding as well. I have some stuff with an even earlier band around the turn of the century that was recorded in an actual studio. They aren't as good of songs as the later stuff but btter recordings and have me on guitar rather than vocals so I'll post em some time.

Thanks alot for all your kind words and advise about the 4 track. It's nice to be part of a community of musicians that really want to encourage and help each other. At S.I.U. everyone in the music dept is so full of themselves. Very refreshing!!!

Thats pretty much how the song goes. You can hear me with my former band playing it @ http://www.myspace.com/chaos_theory_singer

The recording is pretty rough cause we did it at home and none of us are producers or engineers. (We were barely musicians) After we recorded it on 4 track cassette we felt it sounded kind of dragging so we sped the tape up so I guess it's actually in Eb. Give it a listen and tell me what you think. If you like it I have some others, just go to the friends section on the myspace page and click on american chaos theory. A couple of the songs are solo projects with only me you can tell by the drum machine.

Some simple classic rock songs would be:

Paradise City - G n R

Come together - Beatles

Coccaine - Clapton

Sympathy For the Devil - Rolling Stones

Five to One - Doors

And just about anything by the Ramones, Johnny Rivers, CCR, Canned Heat. Look in the many beginners song books. Once you have the songs down you can do just about anything with them.

I have been in a few and let me tell you, it's an experience like know other. A lot of hard times and heartache, but the highest high is worth all of the lows combined. We were and still are the closest friends ever. We called each other every name in the book, we came to blows but when we hit the stage all the bull shit went out the window and what you had was 4 guys who really loved making magick together. Good luck to you guys!!!

Tomorrow Never Knows is a nice one chord song from Revolver. Also a lot of Indian music is written on one chord.

I always encourage everyone to expand and learn more stuff, but the most important thing is to play what you want. If your teacher doesn't think you origional stuff is up to snuff then i geuss you won't be lead guitarist for his band.If he is teaching stuff you want to know then learn all you can from him. If not then get away from him while you are still having fun!!!
