Two in white please... do you take Paypal?
Thanks!
Me for one too, please! ![]()
Very few like the sound of their own singing voice---I've been singing for 30 yrs and last summer was the first time I actually said "well, *that* sounds good" :-) Many times I've had people tell me I sounded great, when I thought "my GOD, that SUCKED"...
Good advice from the other posters about recording your voice! It DEFINITELY helps with actually hearing yourself and making corrections. Don't get discouraged; if Tom Waits and Bob Dylan can sing, YOU CAN! :-)
Fingernails I *know* about (I used to bite my nails ferociously til about 18)!
A wife's tale is gelatin--we call it Jell-O over here. I think you can get it in capsules form...
On the practical side:
Water--stay hydrated. Spliting/cracking nails are a sign of dehydration. When you wash/get your hands wet, dry them as soon as possible and put lotion/moisturizer on them, especially your cuticles (nail bed) where your nails grow from. Rub it in in that area; it will not only help the exsisting nail, but stimulate nail growth!!
Polish/varnish for exsisting nails--ya, sounds sissy, but get some clear nail polish/varnish and put a coat on your nails (or ask your girl) AFTER moisturizing them. Seals it in and protects them from future damage.
Two thumbs up! So comforting...
FANTASTIC! LOVE the tone you were getting out of your guitar; down HOME, baby! Thank you for sharing...
Repetition, repetition, repetition (ever since my early elementary school orchestra days).....the only caveat to that is when you have two songs with the same chord structure and "wander off" to the wrong one (!!).
That being said, I always have my song book (now!)... was playing a song I knew by heart even before I started playing guitar and had a BRAIN COLLAPSE of epic proportion! I couldn't even sing the song again without my sheet (took me two weeks to find the darn thing)..

(edit to add 2nd question): I have a "stock" of war-horse songs (as my friend calls them), but for songs I've just gotten down, welll I have to (blush) write a list that I keep in front of my song book...no other way has worked yet.
I know its been a VERY long time since I posted my first (disasterous? <grin>) soundbites here... I've been playing/practicing ever since then; its GOOD to learn from one's mistakes.
Anywhoo; here are a couple of videos that I got from my friend's open mic:

Thank you Chordie folks!
Silk n steel strings.
Trust me.
I agree with Old Doll; now THAT is one fun song! Makes me wanna grab a longneck beer and dance around...
Excellent stuff; thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much to all!!
Yes, it was an open mic---- I was dinking about with a Mac Book/Garageband and realized that it had a built in mic. I was just amazed that I could figure out how to record, rip from cda to mp3 and upload! So that does explain the "hot" sound (thanks for the terminology).
I do have an electro/acoustic; working on getting a firewire interface to go from the guitar to the computer; that way I can use the software from the computer and the interface to control the levels.
As far as the playing (?); thanks again. I was talking to some other pals, and they suggested a metronome. I'm in agreement, and will be off to find one today.
Oh, and trust, Russell, I've been playing music (violin, etc) since I was 12 so I have absolutely no delusions about how horrid that was---<grin>
Thank you all again; this is why I'm here----to LEARN!
ROFL!
Thank you!!! I know it was awful.... I'm so trying over here... what was the most horrid part; the production, or the playing? (Yes, I realize it's like trying to choose which level of hell is the worst). I'm old, and am realistic about my 6 mos old playing ability....
Thanks again!
Hi, you helpful people!
I've finally managed to record myself via Garageband (the easiest software on the planet). Anywhoo, I'm working on playing with my fingers because:
a) the silk and steel strings sound horrid with a pick (IMHO)
b) I like the control and fullness I can get with fingerstyle.
BUT
I need to figure out how to "control" it... I am lousy with my rythym... Here's a clip; please be gentle!!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks to all for your replies! I realized about an hour after I posted it was fifths, not fives..d'oh!
I've been playing music (violin, piano, melodic percussion) for a couple of decades now, and never really *needed* fifths explained, as on piano its dead easy to find the fifth (or third). But being new to guitar, I've been trying to actually compose music, and thought that if I could get a "down and dirty" way to learn progressions, that it would make it easier.
As much as I've been fighting it, I think I may have to take some theory lessons on guitar...
Thank you all again!

Is there some kind soul out there that could explain progressions/circle of fives (I think its called) to me?
Thankee kindly in advance...

I'm joining the others in a toast for you (as seeing as it's 5PM EST, oh ya...)
Seriously, I understand---there's only one thing more inspiring than to hear the word "no"; seeing someone in action who finds inspiration in the same...
Best to you, sir!

I started with a pic, but ever since I got my Johnson tuned up with silk n' steel strings, the pic sounds too ..harsh (?). I started finger strumming, and now picking. I've found I can really get a lovely rythm going, and can even play a bit of a bass line while picking (and it is fun as hell). I play open tuning, but will get a capo just to see what it plays like (and maybe defeat some that damned B chord)

Ola Danspr, ain't that the truth! There's a band called Yellowcard that has a great violinist (not sure of names and all, but what I've heard is great fun). Also a synth/industrial band, Cruxshadows, has a live violinist (she plays a Yamaha..... boy, when I hit the lotto I'm getting one!)

Thanks for the warm welcomes... music and whiskey/bourbon do go together rather well (sometimes too well ;-) )
I'm thinking about expanding my horizons and trying some Irish and Scotch whiskey/whisky---and this weekend sounds about as good as any. I'll post my findings :-D

Oh my... whiskey/whisky/bourbon talk.... I do think I will like it here!
I'm currently sipping on my favorite; Makers' Mark. While I do appreciate Elijah, he does something to me that prevents me from getting up in the morning (heh)... and yes, Zurf, the best way to drink some bourbons is with a splash of water and a squeeze of lime. Its the only way I can get Jack down these days (tho Gentlemen's Jack goes rather nice).
I'm not much of a whiskey/whisky kind of gal, tho all tell me I should be. What is the difference between scotch and whiskey? I was fortunate enough ONCE to have a sip of Johnny Walker Blue, and let me tell you... pure manna!

Hi Jerry! Thanks for the welcome...
Yes, I just started guitar about a year and a half ago. I began with an Epi Les Paul Goth, but didn't like the non-portability so I found a really nice n' fun Johnson 000 gauge acoustic on craigslist for $70. I just got D'addio (sp) silk n steel strings on it about a week ago and haven't stopped playing it, except when stupid Real Life steps in and I have to go to work or something dumb like that (LOL!)
Back to fiddles! I am not much of a country player; I do more rock violin stuff=== I've found that jamming to music can be So Much FUN!! For instance, Godsmack's "Voodoo" is a song begging for a violin solo (and riff)... jam jam jam!
Thanks again for the welcome!

Realizing I'm late to the party, but you really can't forget Joan Armatrading....

Hi! Newbie here, but couldn't resist violin talk....
I started playing violin in school, a *couple* of decades ago, and recently started back up again.... I got a cheapie Sojing off craigslist just to muck about with, and for my birthday finally got a gorgeous Fender FV-1. Its solid body electric, but has some of the richest tones on the low end. I also have a Fender Acoustimatic Jr that I put it through and WOW....
