Hi Electric's forum!

I'm looking for tips & methods on how to wail on the guitar. Ok, technically it is an electro-acoustic Ukulele through an FX Pedal but the method should remain the same I'm hoping.

For an example of what I'm calling "wailing" is in the various solo's/pre-bridges of The Darkness "I Believe in a thing called Love". The sound I'm wanting to achieve is the bending sounds they do. I cant tell if its 2 guitarists doing the same solo or if they're bending a chord.

Any suggestions/vids would be appreciated,

Cheers

That looks just like my electro acoustic which is a Mahalo, great little thing, sounds good and is a lot of fun with the FXpedal I have.

Once you've got familiar with it you might want to explore the abilities of the jack, check out my thread on My first pedal so you can see what I learnt and save you time (and possible wasted expense).

Have fun

To echo manicbassman and stuck new ukes will fall out of tune quickly. You just need to play the crap out of them, tune up, play some more. I call it "settling" but dont know if theres a proper term for it.

Do just cain it. If you're new to the instrument, your fingertips will turn raw quite soon too so both your strings and fingertips will improve with practice.

I used sheep-entertainment tuner as per bluetick, then I bought an electric tuner then I got an app for free for my HTC Desire called "Gstrings" which is really good, free version. Its got an "autotune" mode which picks up what you pluck to the nearest note - VERY handy rather than selceting A, tune, G, tune etc etc. Great app, 5*

When it comes to chords you just need to keep repeating repeating repeating. Shift from one chord to another over and over. SOunds boring and monotonous but as your finger memory improves soon enough it'll be automatic. Thats how I did it.

Everything improves with time and practice.

Hi Alvee,

Wot I dun woz... to get to a Ukulele taster session if possible where you can try out various different makes and models and sizes. If there arn't any of these ariund your area then hit the local music stores and try out their stuff.
Both options give you the chance to speak to other musicians who'll be able to answer all your questions - possibly better than the music store (my local specialises in guitars and often (to a bit of annoyance) say "its like a guitar...").

So try before you buy. Personally we went to a taster/workshop for an event in town and we played on these cheapy £16 things (cashconverters etc might be worth a look) and we thought that was great and soon bought a Lanakai for £60 from eBay having played with one in a "real" shop in Cardiff.

Music stores a great to try out as they have loads of WAY too expensive ones and some cheap n nasty ones so you can get the spectrum of price/quality/brand/size.

Start with a cheap (like my "[more spam]")to get the feel of it then when you feel you deserve better (and you do and will) look to get one of a higher quality.

The last thing you want to do is fork out £80+ for something thats too small or that sounds/feels not so great. See my sig for the 3 I've got, Cheap but good enough "'ol yellah", smoother louder LU51 (her's indoors) and my toy the Electro Acoustic & pedals.

GuitarPix made a reference to strings, I wouldnt worry about these yet (IMHO) until you're getting into pro territory. I guess they'll sound better but I'm yet to change my strings, I'm an "if it aint broke" kind of player.

Hope this helps, have fun "researching".

Hi Big Dixie,
I just eBayed "guitar effects pedal" and got a whole load of results and the 606 I got was just cheap and available, didnt really dig into it too much to see what frequency the reverb was or anything complex like that.
According to the Zoom's Manuf~ website the latest and greatest are the Zoom G2 varients. A quick flick in eBay they're going for about £80+ / $120 / ¥11,478.86 .

I dont know if there'll be older models which may be more tailored to "old rock'n roll/rockabilly player" but they do offer pedals branded as "Acoustic". Now I dont know what this actually means but usually youi can find reviews in a google or on youtube where someone's got one and plays about with it for 8 mins and (hopefully) narrating what they're doing.

Hope this helps, somehow.

Zoom G2.1u - Has USB capabilites, an expression pedal, 2 stomp buttons (to select up/down like 606's pedals) and its shiny, ooooooh!

Hi All,
Just to finish the thread, this does work and its a lot of fun. I upgraded the earphones to a set of Cans as they have a 3m cable so I'm not hunched over so the 1.5m cable isnt being pulled out compared to the original mp3 player in-ear type ones. The pedal makes some cool echos, distorts, reverbs etc and some weird warpy sounds effects. Lots of fun.

Cheers for all your inputs

Afternoon,

I find I'm more the player than a singer with the Uke but for me its only a hobby so I'm not taking it at all seriously. Fortunately me and my girly both play and enjoy geeking off with the Ukes so thats really good.

Plugged it all in last night and it makes noise so I'm happy with that. Cheers for your replies.

Next to get the manual downloaded and hopefully get the sounds i'm hoping to get out of it, e.g. Wah, metal distortion etc.

Hi All,

I got my first pedal last week other day and have only just got the cable to go with it.

Anyway, will the following setup work at home. I've got the cable which has one black line on it (on left below) and the 3.5mm > 1/4 jack I plan to use out of the pedal has 2 black lines on it (on right).

http://www.musicroom.com/Images/Catalogue/fullsize/STE2027ETS.jpg into http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/items/1m-guitar-lead-jack-jack.jpg into http://data.muzikus.cz/save/db_images/606 then http://product-images.paidonresults.net/5/556255-400x400.jpg to http://store.whsle.biz/images/Sony%20MDR-EX51LP%20In-Ear%20Earphones%20(Black).jpg

My question is;
Do these black lines make any difference or do I still need yet another cable to feed into a (yet to be bought) amp or will my headphones be ok with the 35mm>1/4 jack?

Many thanks in advance,

I'm a Microsoft Certified IT guy in the UK looking after school systems both Curriculum and Admin. It pays the bills (just, but then what job does? (If that makes sence))

Cool, cheers for that info Joe. I'm expecting it all to be delivered in the next few days so will let you know how I got on.

Hi All,

Similar to that Beatles play-along it reminded me of this site which has a Chord Finder tool (and Iphone app) as well as a Play Along feature

Hope this helps

I know of one which is what you describe but its not THE most accurate/educational one but its widely available. Its called Guitar Hero! lol

My stereo is an output only kind, still running after 15 years! GO AMSTRAD!

I tried using a 1/4 RCA (http://www.cablestockroom.com/v/vspfiles/photos/30S1-14200-0.jpg) pulgged into my uke but didnt hear anything through my earphones.

Any thoughts on the whole amp/pre-amp thing?

Hi All,

I recently won an auction for a Zoom 606 (& a 1/4>1/4 cable), wooo!. Nearly....

I was hoping it would just be a case of Electro-Acoustic Uke to Pedal to Headphones (via 1/4 to 35mm jack) but having chatted to the guy in the Allegro in town he says I'm going to need either an Amp w speaker (http://bluwiki.com/images/thumb/f/fe/IconAcousticAmp.png/50px-IconAcousticAmp.png) or a pre-amp http://www.soundonsound.com/newspix/image/thumbs/12434.png and then headphones http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c1/Headphone_icon.svg/43px-Headphone_icon.svg.png.

Alternatively, he said I can monk £150+ on a pair of "Sennies" (http://images.hi5.com/images/gifts/general/headphones01_50.png) which have a pre-amp built into them.

Not being funny but the pedal to me is just a "toy" so I've already done £30 on that and the cable and I dont want to then have to fork out much more on this.

The other day I found an old 35mm > 1/4 jack converter and using that I plugged in my MP3 players earphones and heard nothing through them when I played so I thought that maybe the little watch/CMOS battery that is in the Uke's pickup (?) may be flat.

So, my question to you is;

What do I need in order to hear the wonderful sounds my Uke & new(ish) pedal makes?

I've not got it yet but am expecting my winnings within the next few days.

Many thanks & have a wonderful week

The Tascam US-144 has been replaced with the US-144mkII - but I'm sure you'd still be able to get the Mk1 from eBay etc.

Oooh, shiny!

Think about any music hardware is that I'd like to try it out first and see if it meets my requirements. Esp if you're honking out a fair wad of cash on it.

I've been looking into turning my pc into a make-shift studio and from what I'm reading around you're going to need some decent hardware if you're looking to get a decent result from your sessions.

Take a look at this guide - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/article/2 … ting-.html - might be of some use. Kit can get expensive quickly so I'd research thoughorly. If possible see if any music shops in town do electronics or if they guys at the shops have studios at home or know of studios. You can only ask.

Hope this helps

I read deeper into the forums and found that Chordie was a pool of searches. A date submitted could still be of use though incase people find newer songs and want Chordie to know about them, its how I'd go about doing it personally. Almost the first thing I do when a track comes out is I look for the Chords version of it.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick on this anyway, all the best & enjoy your weekend,

smile Morning All,

I think Chordie is a great site. But what would make it even greater is the ability to list songs by the date they were added or submitted. Reason for this is that I want to see if there are any new songs that have been uploaded. I'll google "song name chords" if I know the song in particular I'm after (e.g. Party In The USA Chords) but it would be cool if you could hit a "New Entries" link and see everything thats newly uploaded.

Maybe there is this feature already but I cant find it, correct me if I'm wrong.

All the best,

L-Uke-Y

Hi All,

Trying to do a song which has (guitar chords) a C#m in it and an Ab . I cant work out what they should be on the Uke. I've tried a few Uke dictionaries of chords but I'm not finding a decent match for either of these.
Rest of the song is fine with E, B  and A in it but these 2 are really winding me up!!
I'm GCEA-Tuned btw smile

Can anyone offer the correct chords and if possible how you worked them out?

Thanks lots,

lUKEy smile
