Man this is AWESOME! Who'd a thunk a little hook-up between 2 chordians in North Carolina could possibly lead to a larger "Chordie-stock"  gathering. That would truly be remarkable.

I think it would be cool to coordinate the date and location with one of the many music festivals that are held each spring / summer. I’d lean towards folk, blues or bluegrass, but there festivals for any genre.

Festival finder link – there are hundreds of ‘em:  http://www.festivals.com/music/

Thought others might like to hear about our hook-up.

GuitarPix packed up 3 of his guitars and made a 3 hour drive to my place today. I told him he must be crazy to travel that far to play with such a beginner, but I really appreciate his effort. Pix is truly a great guy. Although we (really he) did play for much of the afternoon, most of the time I just picked his brain and he had so much information and knowledge to share. I have only been playing for about 6 months, so I am a bit nervous playing in front of others, and today was the first time I have ever done so. I learned more about guitars, (construction, woods, brands, set-ups) this afternoon that I could learn in weeks of research. Additionally he offered several tips to help me with my barre chords (that I have been struggling with), as well as strumming tips and methods. The opportunity to just watch another guitarist and be able to question (how do you do that?, what are you doing there?), is invaluable. AND, besides him making the drive and sharing his knowledge, he also left me a set of strings and a handful of picks! Talk about generous! I definitely got the better end of this deal.

I’d like to thank GuitarPix profusely and recommend that if any others out there have the chance to meet up with fellow musicians do so. I learned a TON today, no telling how long it would have taken to gain this on my own. I only hope that someday I am able to repay this favor.

The three remaining members of Pink Floyd get in a car wreck and all three die. They are standing in front of the Pearly Gates when St. Peter comes up and says, ''Oh, Hi guys! We've been expecting you. Your really going to love it here, this is a great place and did you know that we even have our own band? We have Elvis Presley singing, Hendrix is playing guitar, Sinatra is on piano and Roger Waters, your old bandmate, is writing lyrics for us!'' David Gilmour replies, ''Roger is here? When did he die?'' St. Peter leans over and whispers in his ear. ''It's really God, but he thinks he's Roger Waters!''

Great tune Jeff, I could use some help myself. Some Dr. Phil quotes to help motivate us:

“You can't change what you don't acknowledge.

“It's time to get real!

And my favorite (can’t vouch that it’s real, but I did find it on the interweb smile

“You don't need tight-fitting pants to touch yourself and giggle.

Although not as hard as the "best song" thread, nearly as difficult. There are just so many great bands, you can make a top 10 list, then as you think about it, others will come up that also belong. My wife and I have a similar ongoing discussion regarding top 10 movies - it is constantly changing, the problem is what gets removed. Even depending on the setting, mood, things will change frequently. Bottom Line it is an unfair question, diversity and different styles is a large part of what makes music so great! I love Clapton and have hundreds of hours of his recordings, but if that was the only thing I had, I imagine I would tire of it pretty quickly. That said, and just shooting from the hip, I'll give a shot at my top 10 (in no particular order) and reserve the right to change it!

Clapton
Led Zeppelin
Beatles
The Who
Pink Floyd
Ray Charles
Jethro Tull
Steely Dan
John Prine
Willie Nelson

Hey twilliam - R.O. is a great inspiration, a true ground breaker. I dare say we wouldn't have many since him, if we didn't have him. (And thanks for bringing back this thread from the dead!)

That said, I gotta agree with mrFretty. Clapton has been a hero of mine forever.

Edited to add:

Thought twilliam might enjoy this R.O. video from 1965

I just ordered a Washburn Rover for the same reason. Comes with a great case - sized to fit into overhead bin. Good reviews on Harmony Central. Seems like you can't go wrong for $150.

This site has a "sound room" where you can listen to samples of a few different types of strings. It says it is in Beta, so maybe they will be expanding the selection. Anybody know of a similar site?

http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/soundroom.html

I just purchased 6 sets of strings from them, trying to find the right match. Some Martins, some Elixers, DR's, coated, uncoated, etc.  Problem is, it will take me 6 months just to try these.

The little exercise attached has really helped me with my barre chords. I can finger and switch between them half decently. I still struggle switching between open and barre chords though. I know: practice, practice, practice...

10 points for Charlotte.

How 'bout Talking Heads - I'm thinking of the brain eating scene from the Hannibal movie.

What’s up with the golf haters? Chasing the white ball around is really just an excuse to spend 4 hours or so enjoying the great outdoors while drinking a cold beverage of your choice (mine is beer). It was a glorious day for January; don’t know if we’ll see the 70’s again until spring. It’s much more like hiking to me, since I spend most of the time in the woods.

Old Doll – I’m glad I read your post after I got back. Otherwise I would have had that image burned into my brain on every tee box. Would have been bad for my concentration I’m sure. wink tongue

Kahuna wrote:

Another time when people tend to "hold" the neck is when they're sitting and playing.  Since the guitar body is heavier, there's a tendency to try to keep the neck down (or from sliding) while playing.  To fix this problem, wear a guitar strap while you're playing sitting down.  This will help reduce the neck from moving and distribute the weight more evenly across your back.

That's a good tip Kahuna, I'm gonna try that. Thanks.

That is great James. I really like to hear these originals as opposed to just reading them.

This song and today's weather (70 deg) has motivated me - I'm headed to the course!

Bruce Springsteen & Bob Seger - Just never could get into that blue collar rock sound.

I once dated a gal who really liked Seger. I bought tickets to a Seger concert for us, but I broke up with her just before the show and gave her the tickets. I just couldn't put myself through it.

A blonde, wanting to earn some extra money, decided to hire herself out as a "handy-woman" and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighbourhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.
"Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch," he said, how much will you charge me?"
The blonde quickly responded, "How about £50?"
The man agreed and told her that the paint and everything she would need was in the garage.
The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes all the way around the house?"
He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?
The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all
those dumb blonde jokes we've been getting by e-mail lately."
A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" the husband asked.
"Yes," the blonde replied, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats."
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the £50.00 and handed it to her.
"And by the way," the Blonde added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus!"

For "poetry" or depth in lyrics, I agree with many mentioned here already. Zevon, Waits, Dylan, Prine. One that hasn't yet been mentioned (unless I missed it)  Jim Morrison - the Doors singer for you youngsters.

But honestly I have gotten great inspiration from the posters on the songwriting forum here. Jets60, Old Doll, Doc, Jason, Ken, Roger, James, etc. (all of them - I don't mean mean to leave anyone out). They have inspired me to believe I can write a song myself. Only a few ideas at this time, and I may be too embarrassed to ever post 'em, but I do believe I will give it a shot eventually!

The Graduate - Simon & Garfunkel was pretty darn good

Very funny LR - Not sure I'd want to go to your funeral though. smile
