Nicely done - I especially liked watching you in the delivery... you emotions were written all over your face and movement - easy to tell that this song had great meaning to you. You played it and sang beautifully !
Superb performance

Phill,
Fabulous sound with guitar.... voice has a smattering of heartbreak in it... makes the listener hear your pain !
Just the simple words of the chorus... bitter tears, bitter tears - " shakes the soul " the way you delivered it.
I can imagine you doing this on one of your weekend sets for an audience - and bringing them from a chattering crowd ... to stunned silence by the end of the song.... to a standing ovation ! I know I'd be up and cheering !! You know you got a winner of a song when the listeners are excited at the end of a sad song !
Excellent song, my friend - I think one of the best, if not the best I've heard here on chordie. Probably why it took so long to put together.
It's going on my playlist !
Thanks so much.

Re: Heavens Door-Survivor (20 replies, posted in Songwriting)
I re made this song - took the old version off soundcloud and put this on instead.
It has gone through about a thousand re-writes !
and now I listen to it - I would take out the word "least" in the choruses ![]()
Here it is https://soundcloud.com/tigljk/heavens-d … e-mix-2015
I really believe that someone ( obviously not me) with a good voice and guitar skills could make this into a real good version.
Hope you like it.

Re: Heavens Door-Survivor (20 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Hopefully this will be it !
I listened to the change that I had made and read the message from Phill about putting my stamp on the Dylan song - At first I thought it was a good thing - but last night ( actually this am) I woke up and it it hit me - Phill's message was that it was still Dylan's song ! It hit me like a brick - I wanted this to be my song. Sooooo, I took it away from the Knocking on Heaven's Door chords in the verse and changed the chords. It plays much different, and with apologies to Bobby D, I like it much better. I will put a new version on soundcloud soon as I can. I made one slight change in a lyric and I am keeping the title because I like it and it seems right for me. I am amazed on how this thing tansformed from Playing knockin on Heavens door in my kitchen to this. Thanks to all for your constructive help - love chordie !!
I hope you like it.

I think I heard at least three songs that were hits later come from mutated versions of what was played in this song.
There are elements of the beginnings of a couple of Johnny Cash songs, the song from the movie ( Good bad , ugly)
Amazing - way ahead of their time. I think he looks more like Buddy Holly than Woody Allen though .
Thanks for the introduction to some cool stuff.

A title like that requires everyone to check it out.
Powerful stuff - leaves a lot for the imagination - I've read it three times now and each time thought of different scenarios.
I have no clue how it would play in terms of music - I don't know anything about Metal type music.
However - I would love to hear your version played when transferred into production of a song.
Great job man !!

Great stuff !
They are magnificent musicians each in their own right, but something special happens when they put their ego's aside and play and sing together for the love of their purpose. Ya don't see that too often today.
Modern tech is fantastic, but the generations of today are getting robbed of the opportunity to see great musicians blossom together.
Think about the old tours when musicians would get on a bus together, stay in motels, and travel across America to bring their talents to American stages in small venues - how about the tour that had, Dylan, Cash, Elvis, J.L. Lewis on it ? Or Ray Hubbard, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Rodney Crowell ? I am 100 % positive Badeye can tell of tours of Blues musicians as well that toured together.
There's a place, I think it's Pawling NY ( near woodstock) that there is now a similar venue - its in a barn and musicians get together and perform for a small audience. Love to go there some night!
and as for the grim reaper - F*** him ! As I said in my last song ( heaven's Door- Survivor), - " I'm looking forward to getting old"
Kenny Chesney had a great song - ---> everybody wants to go to heaven, have a mansion above the clouds, everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to go now !
Thanks Bill for reminding us all of how special music can be and how it touches us all in different ways.
Thanks Doug as well, that was 24 minutes of heart warming !!
Keep the good stuff coming !!

Ok - here is the link to the updated version - I can't say the singing or playing is any better, but the song is I think - Thanks Phill for the suggestion of adding a chorus.
Hope you like it.

Re: Heavens Door-Survivor (20 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Phill,
You are spot on once again !!
After you pointed that out out I was like - holy sh** !
So I re-wrote it - made the changes above.... I like it much better.
I think that the chord and subtle strum change in the chorus gives it more of an uplifting sound instead of the dreary sound of the verses ( which in fact would be the point of the song - to be uplifted)
Wish we were neighbors - although our wives are probably glad we're not !
If you have any other suggestions I'm always good to go there.
If you want to give a whack and spin your own version - ( which is always freaking awesome) go for it.
Thanks for the input.
Unlike Dylan, the reason my verses are always played different is because I'm not a very good guitarist !
I'll try to put out a new audio on soundcloud with the changes soon.
Thanks again, my good friend !
Jim
Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the kindness.
Peatle- always nice to hear a song in different versions. Nice job!
Here is my soundcloud post of it - keep in mind I am recording from a cheesy computer mic, I can't sing for crap, and my playing the guitar is quite limited - other than that it is OK I think !
Hope you can listen long enough to get the message.
