I have learned a bunch from this site as well. This is the best "free" site I have found, although I did send in a donation.

Texan4ut, I do agree with you. I play since 30 years and what started as some fun, is now a passion.
Here is my timeline
- 30 years, an acoustic, with an electric element, I was convinced to become a "guitar god"
- in 1977, I was still a student, med school, for another 3 years, playing guitar dropped  to 5%
- Army, no guitar.
- Having a lot of work, a lousy guitar, and broken too, I played occasionaly
- 1990: a new start, buying a gibson LP studio, incredibly cheap, black, you could see your face reflected, golden hardware. 400$ right from a big boss, a very good friend, of the customs at the airport. Couldn't be sold because of some scratches, bought 2 of them and sold the other for 600$.
- Sold my Gibson studio, to buy a PRS Custom 24, an unknown guitar in 1996, except by some professionals, too expensive. That guitar was a 1993 PRS, and 6 months old, because the band splitted. PRS minus Gibson = 600$ to pay.
- 1995; first acoustic, a Martin HD-28 for 750$ from a junkie needing money
- the rest is history
I started to collect, and started to play more and more, today, I am able to play at least 50 different chords, and playing was FUN, and practice SWITCHING CHORDS.
If you know some chords, switch, switch and switch + learn more chords.

gitaardocphil,

Thanks for the encouragement. I have only been at it a month and 1/2. Wish I would have started in 1977 when I was just out of school. Oh well I am going to learn. I know all the basic chords and 7th/minor variations. I am practicing switch chords and getting better. I also have been playing some barre chords to help build arm strength. Satan must have invented barre chords smile

i have been learning guitar since september and loving it but all my songs sound the same, i would like to start really concentrating on my strumming and have chosen tequila sunrise to start.  my first thought is does the strumming pattern stay the same throughout the song (for any song)   and can anyone provide strumming pattern for tequila sunrise??

joy123,

I went to YouTube and typed in Tequila Sunrise in the search window. It brought up several vidos on strumming the song. Good Luck

I can't help you on the Elixir's either. I will ask around. I know several guitar players here. I use D'Addario  EJ16

joy123,

I have been playing only since the middle of November. I am trying to learn tequila surise too. I am not sure of the stumming either. I was supposed to have a music lesson yesterday but the instructor was ill. I will be going next Monday. I will get him to show me strumming will post when I can. In the meantime if you come up with something post it as will I.

pj. Glad to hear. I have been playing a month and a 1/2. I have worked on chords and chord progressions as well as some scales and some finger drills i got on justinguitar.com. I am getting my speed up and was able to butcher silent night at christmas although you could understand what I was playing. Gearing up to work really hard and be playing a few songs in six months. BBDGus let me know how you are doing the next few months.

CSTRAIN  I have same problem, learning the chords is easy, switching from chord to chord is harder. I am getting better but it sure seems a slow process. I will take Zurfs advice and practice them 1000's of times hope it works.

I too have small hands. I have been playing about a month and 1/2. I play the F Chord
-----1-----
-----1-----
-----2-----
-----3-----
I had a tough time, but i have found hand strength not size helps. I have a small rubber ball I sqeeze about 100 to 150 times a day with my left hand (fretting hand) and that has helped along with practice.

I found that same list before I bought a new guitar. I am a beginner less than two months at it. I bought a new Seagull S6 I found it for $299.00 + tax.  I love it so far and those more experienced players whom have played it say it is a great guitar with great sound.  Just thought I would let you know.

Abby,
I am new to the guitar too, less than5 weeks. I felt the same way sore fingers, slow, hard to fret the chords etc. I downloaded a metronome from the internet to my computer. I started at 30 beats per minute and practiced 3 chords c d g trying to not miss a beat strumming each chord 4 times. I now am up to 70 beats a minute and have expanded my chord vobabulary. It still hard and slow but is better than it was. Keep up the good work. I am taking lessons at my church and tht has helped too.

Well I am 53 and I just started playing about a month ago. Getting callouses on the fingers but still can't go more than 30 minutes or so at a time. I too liked the 50's-60's and some early 70's rock and roll. Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Beatles, Elvis, CCR, Three Dog Night were some of my favorites. I also liked some old country and bluegrass with a little of old time gospel thrown in. Hope to learn to play some country music maybe a little rock n roll.  If you have any pointers for old new guy let me know.

Guitarpix, That is what I put on my cheapy Fender D'Addario EJ 26 Phoshor Bronze. When I change on the Seagull I will most likley use them again as I liked the feel, even on a cheap guitar. According to Seagull's web site they put phosphor bronze strings on .012, .016, .024, .032, 042, .053  A6 LT  I am assuming since I bought mine new this is the strings that are on it. Thanks for the input. And thanks SouthPaw41L. I have already learned quite a bit. Hard part for me is patience. Especially on switching from chord to chord. My mind is faster than my fingers.

Zurf, Been doing just that I been playing or in my case practicing until my fingers hurt, then take a break and go for it again.  Brain, I put DAddario custon lights on my cheapy guitar. I liked em and it made it a little easier on the fingers. I will most likely put on the Seagull when it is time. Thanks for the encouragement.

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Seagull SG cedar top. It is so much better than what I had. I can't wait to really practice on it.
