James McMurtry - Gulf Road - WOW GREAT SONG I've never heard til now.
These aren't hits - but holy crap would I have loved to be sitting at this table singing with these superstars when they were young.
Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell (and Bill Callery - one of Willie Nelson's co writers on many songs)

then their is this group hanging out - Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams , jr, Faron Young, Roger Miller and more !

Dang, I wish I could time travel !
Ok here is my survey....
If you were limited to just five songs, what 5 songs would say were the best songs you ever heard or even just your favorites, at least currently ?
I will post mine after Chordie replies have been exhausted.
PS My list changes weekly
depending on my mood.
This might be in my top 10 - not sure about 5 yet ![]()

in my opinion -
"How the hell can a person, go to work in the morning, come home in the evening and have nothing to say" is one of the best lines ever !
unique because it is written for a woman to sing by John Prine.

Peatle
first of all - that video - amazing animation.!!
That song is one of the best songs ever written !
the opening rift is is so good - seems godly.
As you can tell - it is one of my favorite songs of all time.
as for the All Blacks - this is incredible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiKFYTFJ_kw
I think it would be awesome if one of the NFL Football teams did this on opening day - it would shock the world!
the only thing with the Haka - you have to be good enough to back that up !!
Thanks for sharing.
Jim
EB
I never heard that before - really good. precise music - clear lyrics - great rhythm - my kind of music thanks !
Jim
Mojo
Thanks for doing this cover. Sounds great to me.
I appreciate that you took time out of your schedule to record it.
It's funny how when I hear you play it I thought of a couple lyric changes as well.
It was a little faster tempo than I expected, but I loved the style you played it in and your Texas voice just adds to it.
I am envious of your talent, but thank you so much for sharing it .
BTW - you forget to answer my question - do you ever play gigs in Austin ?
Thanks again
Jim

That is a GREAT Song
love the line " settle down and listen to the band" !
Cheers
Jim
Peatle that was a real good video - and especially excellent at pointing out all the things that guys like him and Phill can do without batting an eye, that I will never be able to do
and I know what Phill is gonna say and he is exactly right !
They put in a billion hours of practice - and me - not even close.
Peatle - that made me smile !
strange times indeed. A poem I used to read to my daughters from the book "Where the Sidewalk" Ends reminds me of the people in the world now.
this is the poem
Smart
My dad gave me one dollar bill
‘Cause I’m his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
‘Cause two is more than one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes — I guess he didn’t know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just ’cause he can’t see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And then I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!
And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head —
Too proud of me to speak!
Baha Easy beat !!
Cheers!!!
Neo
love the intro Richard also like the tempo changes Cool song, excellent lyrics
Jim
Good one Peatle You are sage for sure. Nice that Marie joined you on such a cool song.
not really into metal ( sorry Beamer) bubble gum I can only take in small doses
Acoustic, Electric
Both Rock is awesome, but I I am a huge Dylan junkie and love songs that tell stories. The best is when Ballads are sung as rock n' roll !
"Live" provides energy - I still like going to shows- but because of the great musicians that play in studio for making albums, the sound is much better coming from there
so I prefer " Dead "
I like the small self owned music shops - I live in a rural area where we have one music shop- they are very nice and accommodating but price wise cannot compete with the likes of guitar center, sweetwater, or the behemoth AMAZON etc. as far as pricing and available choices.
Ed does a lot of work for charities, big donor to cancer research.
as far as his music - he has some real nice songs (31 top 10 hits) , and some album fillers, just as all the rest do.
His new album however called " Subtract" came out this past May - and it was different. His wife Cherry had a cancerous tumor develop while pregnant - and they could do nothing about til after the child was born. All went well, they welcomed a baby girl (Jupiter) and then had the tumor removed and she was cleared of cancer - but had to undergo some weeks of radiation - she is cancer free.
He also had one of his best friends, Jamal Edwards, die unexpectedly (cocaine and alcohol mix)at the age of 31.
He said it changed him - he threw out over a hundred songs that he had written too choose from for the album - he said ....
"For the first time I'm not trying to craft an album people will like, I'm merely putting something out that's honest and true to where I am in my adult life.
"It's opening the trapdoor into my soul." "I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade's worth of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts. ( he went into depression for weeks)
he said " this album was written against "a backdrop of grief and hope".
one other thing ....
He found out that a young woman with downs syndrome was getting married in the USA and he was touring near that city.
He surprised her and her husband at the wedding reception and played " Thinking Out Loud" for her - took some pictures with her and her family - - and then left.
The album Subtract has become one of the fastest selling albums ever.
I do like him better than the rest though due to his compassion and personality.

Who would have ever thought that Glenn Campbell and Alice Cooper were best friends ?
Alice Cooper interview after hearing Glenn died after his last years battling Alzheimers.
It is worth the watch ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6q2hsdXenQ
Here is a funny one - steve martin - it's hilarious
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmwAD7nHqaY
at least I think so
Peatle
what he said !
There are very few instances that I can ever remember - being with friends and a Beatles song came on - where there was anyone that didn't know it, and didn't like it
The Stones - like what Phill referred to - some great songs - but way too money " recorded for the money" songs - just garbage.
unlike Phill
I can only mange my " 2 cents worth"!
Thanks Peatle for sharing
Jim
EB
That was great ! Loved the whistling part.
He is talented.
Thanks for sharing.
Jim
It reminds of this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_WkoCE
which my grandkids introduced me to while dancing around my kitchen
it was just a moment in time
wrote a poem that didn't rhyme
some new old words, just different lines
it was read by a friend who was a mime
he gave me the silent treatment , he then left cryin'
guess he didn't think it was worth a dime
Then Brian and Peatle went to read the rhymes
down by the river, near the Radiata pines
neither brought any beer, it was such a crime
a beautiful lady came by, dressed to the nines
I asked her to read it, but she was blind
so we just talked, and drank Kusuda Pinot Noir from NZ vines
I read her the poem in that moment in time
she thought it filled with omens, and all kinds of signs
we spent the day together 'til the sun didn't shine
EB, Peatle, and I went to a Christchurch Pub they hang out in sometimes
we met up with Jan who used her beautiful voice to sing out the lines
the words came alive, they flowed so smoothly, like 40 year wine
I've been around, met different people of all kinds
been to the mountaintop, and worked in the mines
just like the poem, seems life can get crazy sometimes
it was just a moment in time
when my friends from New Zealand read those rhymes
seems it ended up being some of the best of times.
Mojo - that is awesome - send me the story about your family love to read about it.
Do you play just around Nacogdoches ?
Have you ever played in Austin ?
p.s. your description is great ... " the revival"
EB - I think instead of the " Bombard" I like Mojo's description - we should call all this the " Chordie Revival " ! ![]()
Jim
that song was freaking AWESOME !!
WOW - they played and sang it perfect -
There were3 instruments when she kicks in with that fiddle.
The song is called Elmore James - its about .....
Elmore James (né Brooks; January 27, 1918 – May 24, 1963) was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader
Noted for his use of loud amplification and his stirring voice,
One of his most famous songs was Dust My Broom, which has been covered by about blues player that ever made it big.
James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
His slide guitar technique earned him the nickname "King of the Slide Guitar".
{the song also pokes fun at how sucky modern music is at one point.
}
Thanks Peatle - it's on my playlist now !!
Cheers
Jim
Thank you EB .... just doing my part to aid a worthy cause .
Phill - I wouldn't mind being 16 if I could a bunch of friends to be there with me.
Jan Thanks for the kind words - My cover doesn't do it justic. Inmy head it sounds good , but when I play and sing it lowers the
quality quite a bit. I think mojo would be a good fit, but really Phill, Neo, or any of the other great performers on here would awesome as well.
I think it's a pretty cool song - just needs a good musician. ![]()
Thanks to all
Cheers
Jim
Mojo
That song is awesome ! Your voice and playing are great as usual.
I still think it would be a great fit - you would be the man to sing that song I wrote ( if you ever get the time).
[When The Magnolias Bloom Again]
Do you play just around Nacogdoches ?
Have you ever played in Austin ?
On a side note Mojo, as a Texan - I thought you'd like this ..... I was on a cruise in Europe a few weeks ago and one of the women on the cruise was from Austin - a seventh generation Texan. Her great, great, great grandfather was Jesse Billingsly - a soldier that fought at the battle San Jacinto. If you look at the picture of Houston and his men as Santa Anna surrendered, - he the guy over Santa Anna's right shoulder. Here is link to the picture (enlarge it to see numbered men and names) https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531 … 0309/m1/1/
It was really cool to meet her...
It was so cool to talk to her about it.
