So thanks again yall.

haha, well that depends on WHICH rich and poor family raise them.... I think it'd be an interesting expirement to take a couple of identical twins, raise one of 'em where i grew up (Seedtick Texas), and one in New York city, and I think there'll be more than educational differences lol

... anyway to get back on topic, srry i can't really be more help, what I do know is that from hearing Jimmy play, he has a sound thats similar to SRV, but tends to be more classic bluesy and less rockish, using a cleaner sound than Stevie Ray's stuff.
I don't know about the rest of the country, but being from Texas people like SRV and ZZtop, Bob Wills (king of western swing; not well known in other parts), are pretty well known. Texans are real big on state pride so when we turn out a Texas based musician we're usually pretty supportive....
hence the huge number of waylon and willie fans smile

No need to be harsh Ken smile
its a little bit bouncier and upbeat than what I planned on, but I actually like it. The chord progression was really nice, similar to what ive been playing around with. I'm just tickled to be able to hear it on here, kind of cool hearing come together from a listeners point of view.
Its almost a shame I didn't write a lead part to it, would sound cool with some picking over that instrumental break you do, but then you need more than one person for that really... anway im just talkin' to hear my head rattle anyhow.
Anyway good job.... its funny how the tune sounded a lot like what I was aiming at (a bit faster but once again it sounds good that way).

i think you have some really good solid lines here to build off of, and its a nice idea too.

Everybody's staring at the floor as if they were all in the war,

AND

But now the grass is brown and we're fighting to the ground

Especially those two, they're the ones that are sticking out to me. As you go through the process of polishing, editing, adding (and omitting), I think these especially shouldn't be changed. Good luck with finishing it, I'm tyring to finish a couple myself and it can be very frustrating.

this one's still kind of in bits and pieces but im kind of stuck on where to go, maybe somebody can give me some advice (or maybe somebody will be brave enough to tell me if i just need to scrap it and start over lol)

I've spent money like I had money to burn
And there's been days when I didn't have a dime
I tend to live a little more than I learn
But all the same I've had a pretty good time

I've picked a lot of guitar
And I've played, alot of real sad songs
Ive sat here at home too much
And stayed out on the road too long

(here's what I guess you could call the chorus but its very rough and unpolished so far)

Have I had a good life?
Well that depends on what the standards are.
Ive laughed a lot and cried a little,
but never had a built in pool in my back yard
And am I happy?
Well that depends on who you ask and when
Most days I feel okay
But even rednecks get the blues now and then.

And thats as far as I got, comments/suggestions? smile

Okey Dokey so here's another one from my notebook, very unpolished but I think it has some potential..... suggestions and even constructive criticism would be appreciated.
Im thinking it should have a bluesish type sound.

TOO BUSY

I was too busy writing a song about it
To do anything about it at the time
I wasn't concerned
About how to make it work
I was concerned about how to make it rhyme

CHORUS

But I guess it aint so bad after all
After all I'll probly do it all again
i don't know if I am right or wrong
But I heard the other sinners shout amen

I was too busy playin' the blues
to get them when they came around
I wasn't listenin'
When they tried to come in
I was listnin' to that guitar sound

(go to chorus)

I was too busy havin' a good time
To notice how much it slipped away
I wasn't countin' the years
When they dissapeared
But I was countin' ona  few more yesterdays

Well I figgered I'd come post a song or two out of my notebook that have been sitting there a while. This one I did really just for practice so its not exactly poetry, but I thought it was kind of neat. The idea was to put a 'everything you need to know about life' speech into a song. If you'll notice, most of the sets of lines (thats two) involves a play on words, or words that mean two different things.
If anbody else who enjoys writing would like to try this out and add some verses please feel free, i think it's be cool to have a joint effort kind of thing goin' on... but please at least leave a comment/suggestion smile
Srry there are no chords yet, I usually play it with a basic G C G D G kind of pattern.

There's lots of roads that don't go nowhere
But there's a few that do
You can either get the cheapest deal
Or you can get the view
Some boots were made for walkin'
But some are just for show
There's lots of people talkin'
But just a few that know
-
And some folks want to get somewhere
Some wish they'd never come
But a good man is a good man
No matter where you're from

A pot is made for boiling
But its grown for smokin' too
Most educated people
just aint got a clue
Black is black and white is white
but it aint politically correct
its like 'homo' without 'sexual'
or hell instead of heck
-
And some folks like to sing along'
And some won't even hum
but good music is good music
No matter where you're from

The devil is a liar
or a real good lookin' man
Straight's the opposite of gay
or a real good poker hand
Some people are always right
And some aint never wrong
The Lost Highway's a bad place to be
But its a real good song
-
And some people give the finger
And some stick out thier thumb
And meatloaf tastes like meatloaf
No matter where you're from

Anyway i know its kind of silly, but there it is.

When you think about music some pretty big names come up as being succesful and well known internationally (the beatles, the stones, for example). a lot of these seem to come from Europe... so the topic is, who do yall think is the most influencial musician (or band) that was from and based mainly in America?
guys like BB King, Hank Williams, and even bands I like, (CCR, and Skynyrd, for instance), were awesome, but are they as globally recognized as somebody like The Beatles, or the Rolling Stones, or even AcDc. EVERYBODY knows who the Beatles are, but if you were to go somewhere in Europe would American legends like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, or Muddy Waters be as well known??
I guess everybody knows who Elvis is of course....

Personally I think SRV is better, but I guess its just a matter of opinion. Jimmie does a real good song called 'Heaven done called another blues singer on home'.

I strum a little with my thumb, seems there are some rythyms you just cant pick up using a plectrum. I do a lot of pick AND finger stuff too and Yes I have experienced this problem too. I think this happens when we try to get volume out of the strings, probly the greatest disadvantage to playing without a pick. I know a guy who never uses a pick, and he's an really good player. His thumb is really calloused (did i spell that right?), and he keeps right up on strumming and everything.

practicing scales, and learning them quickly will build up finger strength, as will any simple little licks, like the boogy woogy or something. I like to set aside a time every day (not usually very long, around 15-20 minutes, and you probly wouldn't need that long at first) to doing my scales ONLY, or (I alternate days usually) looking at a chord chart and starting at the beginning, make every chord I can untill I get to the end.... then of course you have to remember to have fun playing too. In fact the majority of time you spend playing oughta be playing songs you know, or just strumming around, kind of kick back and have a good time, its very relaxing.
The main thing is to keep on trying, the more you do it the easier it gets. Looking back now its almost funny that I used to complain that my fingers hurt after hitting something simple like a G, or a C, so hopefully one day I'll laugh at complaining about barre chords lol

don't [C]need no explanation, no [C]teary alibi
[G]Don't even try to tell me [G]who, when, or why
I [D7]could not see the forest, I was [C7]looking at the trees
But [G]suddenly it's obvious, suddenly I [D7]see . . .

As usual I have a favorite part smile.  I like this song, and i love the seventh chords. Not sure what it is about C7 but i've always loved that chord for some reason.... anyway this was real good.

I've been listnin' to my Waylon Jennings- Essentials alot lately, and Shooter Jennings Put the O back in COuntry

well the 60's and 70's were good times for country music, turned put Waylon and Willie, Merle, and some of Hank Jr.'s best works.... and loretta lynn and george jones came along around then too if i'm not mistaken. Its been called the Golden Age of COuntry Music, because you had awesome new guys and awesome old guys around at the same time to sing together.... somewhere in the 80's it kind of took a turn for the worst lol
One of my favorite bands from the 60's -
Creedence Clearwater Revival. I love to hear some good old rock n roll music from before they had all the technology and effects we have today, and CCr seems to be a good example of what stage in development playing electric guitar was (as were some other fine bands i'm just using them because i like them). I like to hear it because I can hear the basic patterns and tricks etc. that have become the base of so many modern styles.

i really like this song legate, course i'm always a sucker for songs about home (or wanting to go there), *sigh*.... anyway nicely done. A nice little lead part would be great in this song something deep and acousticy, maybe some little slides or something. aNyway thats just me getting ahead of myself again lol.... nice work smile

'I know they won't miss me, someone will replace me'- lastrebel's favorite line this time

Alright so when you put on a CAPO, you're moving the key up by one half step each fret, this I know. Okay so why is it that when i play the heartbreak hotel solo on the twelfth fret that it sounds exactly the same no matter where the capo is at and i don't move my fingers????
Shouldn't the note be a half step lower if i take the capo off the first fret and play open?

I'm sure if I'm just up too late
Or if my blues are finally gone
...............
first of all let me say im flattered that someone would want to record it, secondly a willie nelsonish type sound is folkish countryish, but he has a unique rythym and this was similar. These lines (srry for the typo) are SUPPOSED to say

I'm NOT sure if i'm just up too late,
or if my blues are finally gone.....

But do it anyway you like. Looking forward to seeing the video smile

if he's trying to kill himself, then he's not serious. If he were serious he would be dead by now...
Nobody is worth that kind of drama, if he wants to die I'd tell him to head out. What he wants is for everybody to have a big emotional breakdown, so I just wouldn;t ablige him.... and i'm not just talking cuz i've had to deal with people like this before.
Jerome,
I think children do have different personalities, but because the majority of behavior is learned, most people just pick up on what everybody else at school is doing. Deep down I think they have different tastes, they're just too ashamed to admit it because they've learned what is and isn't "cool". I don't like to think of myself as a herd animal,  but even I'll admit I'm no grown up yet.... even if for circumstances beyond my control i had to grow up a little faster than most kids these days.
Being 'unique' these days also seems to be a form of following the crowd. You either do everything everybody else is doing to look cool, or you automatically NEVER do what anybody else is doing because you think it makes you cool....people should just do what they want, and if somebody else does it thats cool, but if they dont thats ok too. SOme things everybody does because its a fad, but some things are done by everybody because it just makes sense....like chocolate ice cream.

well you could always do some Ozzy....
There's a song by metallica called (i think) the memory remains, that has this creepy little part that sounds halloweenish. He kind of just goes 'na na na naa na '.... anyway maybe you should look it up lol

yeah it was pretty late and i finally nearly fell asleep while i was writing it so i decided to wait till later to finish it up. I think it needs a nice fiddle or stell guitar and some smooth easy pickin'.... but it'll probly end up with some waltzish type strumming and maybe a minor chord here and there.

Last night I was listnin' to some waylon and willie (and this was not just another good hearted woman, luchenbach, record it was the actual waylon and willie record), and as usual it made me jealous and put me in the mood to write (dang you willie nelson lol), but for some reason i got the worst case of writer's block.... so finally after i'd used up half my notebook i wrote this little ditty about not being able to write a song...
it has a willie nelsonish type rythym by the way.

I've wasted too much paper
Tryin' to write a song that just won't come
Seems I've lost my way
To wherever songs come from
But if I was a little sadder
Or if the voice inside my mind
Would remind who I was
and who I am just one more time,

CHORUS
Then I would write a sad song,
That would make the whole world cry,
Then maybe I'd feel better
And could go back to getting by

This pen that I'm holding
Just won't turn out no more songs
I'm not sure if I'm just up too late
Or if my blues are finally gone
But if I could just remember
Everything I want to say
Or all the feelings I'd forgotten
About my younger days
CHORUS

Well anyway there it is, not much for the time i put into trying to get it to come out but it is what it is
