Scales and modes tell me where to work and from there really I just go from the gut and try to remember the good bits and scrab the not so good.

Right now i have a pupil who is learnning electric because of the type of music he wants to play. I also have one that I'm teaching on an accoustic for the same reason. Both of them tinker with the other type as well after the lesson. Both are comeing along at about the same pace so I don't feel that either aproach if more or less valid than the other.

scales are the rules, you need to learn em , then learn how to break em, thats why  the top guys sound so good

Very Very well put!!!! Besides if you are serious about something then you should learn all that there is to know about it!

Depends. Where in Indiana? I'm always interested in other musicians and have actualy written songs for female singing back when I was working with another band who had a female vocalist.

Good one. Very accessable song with some nice, slightly less barbbed lyric, clever lyrics. And personally I like a good waltz.

The Doors. Nothing can compare to a Doors show when they were on. Course nothing as bad as a Doors show when they were off. I've seen footage but too young to have gone to a show.

I started performming as soon as I had a few songs down.I played every week at The Longbranch which was a coffee house in town. It was mostly a modish type crowd, bunch of exies. They were more into the feeling and passion and express of the performance than the technical skill so it didn't have to be real fancy. It was a great place to build confidence and a bit of a rep as well as try new material.

Ain't She Sweet is another good one for learnning to work with barre chords It has E, F, B, F#, Ab, C# and A. It will help you to move more smoothly from one to the next and sounds good played really fast (Beatles Anthology 1) or slow (Beatles Anthology 2). Really you've gotten past the hardest part now it's just a matter of repitition and practice. You'll make it there! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Cool!!! I'm gonna go with Dm add9. I really do need to study my theory a bit more. Seems like every time I slack off something like this comes up. I don't have a tutor so it becomes very easy to stop studying and just jam all the time. I really should have been able to figure that one out <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">  Thanks again man!!!

honestly I'd say learn both major and minor and go ahead and grab the blues scale while you're at it. Really, any scale that you don't know is something you should learn. Major scales are the key that unlocks the door to all of music theory and minor scales are an absolute MUST for blues and most rock n roll and then there is jazz where all the rules go out the window anyway <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_twisted.gif" border=0 alt="Twisted Evil"> ! So I say learn em all and let your mind and fingers sort them out!

Close...it is actually

-0- <- E

-3- <- D

-2- <- A

-3- <- F

-x-

-x-

But the chord you just showed has a nice sound too.

the song goes

D / mystery chord / x2

C / G / D  and back to the beginning. So I believe it to be in the key of D. So assuming a D chord I geuss I'm flattening a third on the D string from F3 to F and double flatting the third on the High E string from F3 to E. So what does that spell? D sus minor? Is there such a thing? I've really got to study up more on theory <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_confused.gif" border=0 alt="Confused">  I'm sorry to be such a problem child. I remember when the hardest thing I had to figure out was whether or not it was ok to end on a sixth. (I did it anyway).

That happened actually just today. I was working on the Day Tripper riff and for a couple of days my fingers were so stupid, then today they just danced away. Glad to hear it worked out for you!!!!! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

I think you are right on. Extreme climate calls for extra care. Otherwise good habbits are probably enough.
