Oh yea - I noticed the tuning. I immediately tuned her up to standard tuning (at least for the weekend) as I noticed some expected fret buzz with the drop tuning. (Tuning a 12 is twice as hard LOL!). I do like your idea of keeping it tuned down, especially since I'll be leaving her at home while I travel during the week.

One question - what type / gauge strings are on her? ( I assume lite's) I need to order a few back up sets. I hate the chore (but love the sound) of changing strings on my 6 string guitars, I'm sure it will be double the hassle on the 12!

The top looks great, but is a bit darker than it looked in your pics - but it blends real well with the EIR sides and back which are beautiful.

I haven't plugged her in yet - think I'll try that right now! I am very pleased with my purchase and happy to help in your quest for a custom build. You can use me as a reference anytime my friend.

I'm pretty sure they are Elixir Light's. They are the original strings so I'm not positive. I may put the custom on hold temperarly...With the wood choices and features I want to incorporate ,from the builder I want, it's going to be close to 8 grand....Wow  When I do it, I want it right so I'm setting aside the money from selling most of my collection in a seperate account until I can raise the rest or the wife gets ahold of it one..lol I did cushion the postponment with a very nice Martin D18 that I purchased last night..:) You can see it in the AGF classifieds. All the best to ya! -Chris

I had to revive this thread, primarily for song ideas, but also because when I got home this evening, I had Pix's 12er waiting for me. Pix made me a deal I couldn't pass up so now I have a 12 string Alvarez in my collection! She's a beauty, I was worried about fingering a 12 (I've never even tried one), but the action is like butter.

Just wanted to say thanks to Pix and re-open this thread for any more 12 string ideas. I've got a feeling I'm gonna be up late playing with my new toy!

Hey Tops, Glad she arived safely! Hope your pleased with everything! You probably noticed I had it tuned down a full step so you can just capo on second fret for standard tuning. I just always felt safer with a little less tension on the top and man she plays so sweet that way smile Glad my set-ups please you!! Enjoy! -Pix

Electronics have no effect on the guitars tone! Of course if you go with a thin body acoustic/electric then the tone will be affected. Whether or not cut aways affect tone is a much debated question among the pro's. IMO it does affect the tone slightly but not enough to worry over and the slight diffrence won't even be noticed by most listners. The access to the fretboard is a welcome and more than fair trade off...IMO I say go full bodied cutaway acoustic/electric with a solid top and quality electronics and you won't be disappointed! Just my .02! -Pix

If your not worried about a cutaway then I say install a K & K western pick up in the washburn and play away!

Interesting question (and result) Pix.  I just compared it to my Tak side by side, strumming open in roughly 1/2" increments. Both guitars have a higher pitch when played nearer the bridge (duh) and get deeper as you work toward the fingerboard. Whats interesting is that the Tak levels out while strumming over the normal placed soundhole, whereas the CA just keeps getting deeper. Once I reach the fretboard, they both seem to level out evenly. Another benefit I had failed to realize!

Nice! So you get a broader range of tones! Cool! I really need to try one of these before I go much further wink

Hey tops, This may be a stupid question, but I'm curious... With an offset soundhole can you change the sound by strumming/picking closer to the bridge or to the upper regions of the top bout. You know what I mean, Like strumming an ordinary soundholed guitar before, over or past the soundhole. I'm guessing it still changes some but how much?

Thanks for posting this Kap! Really enjoyed "The Troubador" nice lyrics and melody. I'm going to search for the tabs for that one and try to work it out.

My dream guitar is a custom built. I've talked to 2-3 luthiers about it but will more than likely go with Tim Mcknight http://www.mcknightguitars.com/ I've put 6 of my other guitars up for sale already to help finance this project. Spruce top (undecided on the variety at this point) with Myrtle back and sides. Haven't settled on the bindings and finer points yet but the rossette will be sapwood with burnt in script. My family crest will be the 12th fret inlay. That's all the details I have at this time. The waiting time for completion runs about 3 years and will carry a heavy price tag but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I plan to have 3 before I pass on.... one to leave to each of my sons... All will have the family crest as the 12th fret inlay but will be diffrent wood combinations.... At least that's the plan smile -Pix

John Butler Trio and Jack Johnson. Jacks started using Zack from ALO on piano some for recording and occasionally on tour but I'd still consider them a 3 man band. Zack only plays along when he's not busy with his own projects.

Well what I would probably try first is going to the elixer nano's. They have a much thinner coating then the poly and tend to be brighter. I'd go with the 80/20's as they tend to be brighter than Phosher Bronze strings.  I'd also consider changing the bridge pins to brass. This would probably be one of the most audible changes. I did this to an alvarez dread I had about a year ago and was very pleased with the results. Just some ideas....-Pix

What kind of sound/tone are you getting now and what are you wanting to achieve? Are you looking to bightin the tone or darken it? More bass/treble or less? Need more volume? Kinda need to know where you're at and where you're wanting to carry it in order to offer any usable advice! -Pix

Oh yea what kind of strings are you using now? I know elixer mediums but are they poly, nano, 80-20's, or pb's

Of course you did explain that it is the responsibility of the person that loads the washing to empty all pockets, replace missing buttons, and darn socks before putting them in, so it could not be your fault at all.

Just a suggestion, although it might be an idea to plan your getaway route before you mention it.

Roger

Roger I went this route once with the misses and ended up doing my own laundry for a few weeks....:o Tread this ground carefully lol

Off hand the only tips I can think of are... When changing strings always bend the ball end of the string to a 90 degree angle before putting the pins in. This gets the ball back out of the way and stops those annoying string slips that scare the $#!+ out of ya when tunning it up. Also I like to tune up my guitar after a string change and then after a few hours of playing and the strings have stretched out I'll take the tension off the wound strings. Then I remove the bridge pins and twist the strings about 2 times and then reset the pins. Twist them in the direction they're wound (usually clockwise). Wound strings are similar to springs and as you put them under tension they stretch and the winding is not as tight as it was without tension. Putting a few turns in them rewinds the string and they have a better responce, tone and it actually seems to help then last longer also.

I would think a K&K Mini would be ideal for this application..

I actually hate the way my guits sound on the first day of new strings..I don't like them till about the 3rd day when they tone down a bit. I guess I just favor warm over bright. I had an extra set of elixer poly extra lights from some set ups I did for a friend laying around and decided to try them on my Yairi. Yikes.. it ruined my tone... Sounded so thin. It's been 4 days today and they still sounded thin. I had to up the stiffness of my pick from a .73 Dunlop nylon to a .88 tortex to compensate and they sound acceptable now. I'll be going back to elixer nano medium-light PB's as soon as I can justify the change. I wish they had a better selection of acoustic flatwounds on the market. I only prefer the elixers because you don't hear the slides as much.

I celebrate this holiday every day at 4:20 and twice at 8:40 smile She's my favorite!!

Doc as far as Thanksgiving we always have a turkey with dressing and giblet gravy for tradition but we mainly indulge in barbeque on the holidays in my family. I usually slow smoke a side of hog over hickory for 12-14hrs every holiday. I've actually had to cook 40 lbs. of it today...It's a little side thing I do for benefits/parties and what not. -Pix

Camron, 74 is only about a mile from my house. I'm 45 miles west of Wilmington on 74. Chadbourn is at the junction of 74 & 76. Next time you'll have to swing by for a little jam smile

I'm about 10 miles from the SC state line and about 30 miles in from the coast.

Hi GuitarPix,

Are you sure that isn't Perdue, thats distribute's the Turkeys? Well, thats ok, as long as I can still get my Ribeyes, I'm good.

   Cam

Yea we have perdue and a newer company called peru... It may be regional...I think they're trying to gain success of the perdue brand though. In my area hog and chicken farms are very abundant and we tend to get some odd brands/distributers that pop up from time to time. Especially in our smaller grocery stores like Piggly Wiggly, Hills, & Food Folks. Man even our grocery stores sound hick...lol You now how it is though...You're from fairly close by smile -Pix
