I was painting targets today, and wore eye prote tion most of the day. Nothing wrong with caution.

normtheguitar, the time is blocked out on my calendar. I will do what works out. Good luck with that tooth.
UncleJoe, I'm coming on Saturday and plan to overnight to Sunday. I'll likely just bring a tent and a cot as the camper is a bit of a pain to set up and take down for one night. I'd like to make some wings for folks as a contribution to the food. How many should I plan for?
Amy and Jim, I'm really looking forward to seeing you folks again. It's possible I'll have a bottle of something for y'all to sample.

I busted the high E paired to the low E the first time I changed strings on my 12 string. E strings are ornery. Don't pay it any mind.

My 50th is coming up. I asked for a PA. I am interested in giving back to my community with music, if possible. Not many folks worry about our shut-ins, so I'm hoping to be able to play some tunes for them once in a while. I've been working hard to clean up my sloppy songs that I learned for the fun of playing such that they might be fun to hear. So I wanted a PA.
Mrs. Zurf ordered one for my birthday, which isn't until the end of the month, but when it was delivered yesterday she shouted at me, "Hey Dad! You're PA is here." Mrs. Zurf had given the kids notice, but the eldest had a teenaged version of a senior moment.
It's a Harbinger 4 channel 60 watt. That should get me started. I'll have to see whether the head is powered or the speakers. I've got an eight channel mixer I can step up to, but don't know whether I'll need an amp.
I will need some speaker stands.
Lots of practicing to do. Thanks to those who have given constructive criticism up to now. Keep it up.

Dirty Ed has twenty songs, at least, better than any of the songs that get airplay on our local radio station. His first song, Bluestone, could have been his last and he'd still have written a better song.
I know a song writer locally who does nothing but goofy little ditties that he posts to the internet to build a following so that he can work in more serious stuff later. He's already got thousands of followers writing one dimensional songs, so the idea of having fans sure does work.

If we were closer, you wouldn't need the gun.
I admit to ignorance on dimensia, but what I do know is that Chordians are the kindest, most accepting people I've come across. I am more at home and at ease with a bunch of crazy Chordians than I am at my church. That speaks either very well of Chordie or poorly of my congregation. I prefer to think the former.
The only folks that come close are river folk, but that's mostly because river folk just don't care.

I agree with Amy, Zurf, you are releasing that voice a little more, but in parts I do hear a little timidness, if you don't mind my saying so, my friend.
I was just thinking, and I don't know if you'd be willing to do this, but could you lay down the guitar track and then the voice on this one? I just thought it might show the strength of the voice a bit more, Zurf.
By the way, we still have the "Songs For Dondra" saved on Dopbox.
Bill
Thanks Bill. I am always open to constructive criticism. I intend to use that Dropbox account to share recordings and solicit constructive criticism. I have received very helpful suggestions from Amy, Dirty Ed, Russell Harding, Jeff Gilpin, Detman101, and others not on Chordie over the years. Without the support of these other talented folks, it would be difficult to improve.
As for laying down one track and then the next, that is a good idea and I will try that in time but not yet. Just now, my goal is to do some performing. Recording is a means to an end. By recording exactly as I would play live - doing everything at once in a single take - it gives me the feedback I need, and the opportunity to share the recording for constructive criticism from trusted friends. To do the track by track recording will require me to put effort and time into learning the software and editing the tracks, when I'd prefer to put my limited time into improving performance. I'll be putting some of them in that same Dropbox folder, so feel free to check in from time to time and give a listen to anything new, and please do send your constructive criticism my way. I am eager for it.
My birthday is coming up soon, and I have asked the beautiful and talented Mrs. Zurf for a PA that was on sale over Labor Day Weekend. I won't get it, but I did ask for one. :-) I'm also saving for some K&K pickups for my non-AE guitars.

"Normalizing was on" - can't you push a button to shut it off? Knobs? Oh my... careful, don't twist them too far!!!!
Thanks for the complement on my singing. It had a very, very long way to go, but I am pleased with the progress. When I listen to my old recordings, I don't finish. I was just unlistenable. At least now I don't cause geese, cats, and ferrets to run and hide when I play.
As for the Normal switch. It's in the software. It's a push as to whether a virtual button or a physical knob is more dangerous to one's psyche. One evening I'll work up the courage.

Re: New frustration (22 replies, posted in Recording)
I think I figured out why my voice was clipping. Normalizing was on. So either the mic was too hot, the channel send was too hot, the master volume was too high, or the master recording volume was too high.
This cannot be fixed by button pushing. It's time to pull out the big guns and twist some knobs.

It's a little like musicating, except you take other people's musicatiousness and put an arrangement on it that uses chords and transitions you know so you don't have to go through all the bother of learning something new and useful.

Why is my voice clipping?
The mic's not too hot. Is it the master send volume? Or perhaps the master record volume in the software. Or maybe the mic is too hot.

Cables checked. No speakers or monitors attached - just headphones to the headphone jack so I can hear the mix or whether my mic is way too hot (which it was when I couldn't hear), and the USB input to the computer. The computer is supposed to be able to feedback to the unit so that I can hear playback through the phones, but it's not happening.
I'll push some more buttons, but with sound coming out of the computer speakers (I have a decent H/K subwoofer system on the computer), that's good enough for my purposes.
All I'm trying to do is record what I normally do so that I can hear it play back. That gives me the ability to self-criticize and try to improve my performing.
I've already learned that I probably need to bump Blue Train up a whole tone, and some of the stop and start stuff I was doing with the guitar makes it sound like the songs are ending in the middle. So I'll have to work out a little different arrangement that gets quieter but doesn't stop. Easy way to learn.

Don't laugh. Punching a bunch of buttons worked half way.
I still can't get playback through the headphones, but I was able to get playback through the computer speakers and that was good enough.
The new headphones are wonderful. They are AKG K44 headphones from Guitar Center, which were on sale for $29.99 over the Labor Day Weekend.

They are using different channels, but the USB output is a single mixed output from the device.
I did the most sensible thing. I bought new headphones. Hey. They were on sale. Don't judge.
I'll get another new 9V. I don't know how long the one I put in has been in the Guitar Tools drawer. Then I'll push a bunch of buttons.

The last time I tried to do some recording, it worked great. I had my Peavey 8 USB plugged in via USB. I set WavePad (the software I'm using) set to take the input and provide the output to the USB device. I put on my headphones to monitor it... and all I could hear is the mic. I recorded a song anyway, but couldn't get playback from the device.
I replaced the battery in the guitar and...nothing. But it did show up on the bouncy doodad in recording volume that it was getting a signal. What that signal might be, I have no idea because I can't get playback. I even maxed out Presence and Volume on the guitar's built-in preamp and nada.
I am confident that the two problems - no guitar in the headphones and no playback in the headphones - are going to be solved by pushing buttons. My problem is that I don't know which buttons to push. Any suggestions?

It's always fun. And the neighbors are cool. About 2:00 one morning had us still jamming. I asked Topdown, "Don't your neighbors mind the music so late at night?" The reply came from over the fence, "No!" His other neighbor was hanging with us on the porch.
