Do you remember, lovin' on the floor in Belsize Park?

Do you remember, you never understood I had to go

There is software you can buy that'll remove the vocal from any MP3 file you put on your computer, so basically pretty much anything on your iPod. Do a google search and I'm sure you'll come up with something. (I believe the same software will also remove the lead guitar track for anyone that might be interested).

Hi DG and welcome to Chordie. If you go to the Public Books tab at the top of the page and click on Absolute Beginners you'll find hundreds to choose from.

That's starting to look good. I too like the soundport. Just one question will the soundport affect the projection of the guitar?

Just tragic news, one of the greatest blues players ever to pick up a guitar. Mrs Buzzwagon and I walked down the aisle to Walking By Myself and our guests took their seats to his version of Need Your Love so Bad. Devastated. RIP Gary

I have an Epiphone Wildkat, a smaller body than a 335 but bigger than a Les Paul. You don't see many of them about, very underated, cracking tone and very rock n roll. I play it through both a Peavey Windsor and a Blackstar HT5, (both valve amps).

Here you go Bunbun, a review. Sounds a good guitar and if Schechter was good enough for Mark Knopfler..... at $200 it sounds a steal! Here in the UK the Diamond C1 retail at anything from £450 - £750.

My two penn 'orth. Putting stickers on your fretboard is likely to make your guitar feel awful to play. I'd also expect them to wear off in no time as you play and when they do you'll be left with a sticky fretboard until the glue wears off.

As for naming the notes as you play them I could be wrong but if I am it'll be 25 years of theory wasted but the notes on the bottom E string are E, F, F#, G, G# , A etc etc. I don't think there's any such thing as a minor note, only a minor chord!

Wanting to do some traveling from Ohio toward either Nashville or Virginia Beach.   Anything within an 8-10 hour trek one way...stay a few and return.  I call this fishing expeditions without the poles......  lol

Does anyone have any tips on how to find locations that welcome pickers/singers as in jam sessions/open mic night or even bands that welcome people to get up and try a few songs?

The intent is to make new friends and find like minded musicians/singers.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.   Thanks!

Gabby

Hi Gabby

Coming from Surrey in the UK I have no idea unless you can make the Irish Club in Crawley, but the thought of an 8 - 10 week trek to Nashville sounds great so can I come with you? wink

Led, one of greatest bands ever to grace the planet. I've got everything they've ever released, love 'em. Sadly never saw them live and tickets for the o2 when they reformed a couple of years ago with Jason Bonham on drums were oversubscribed by x10 or something. On eBay tickets were going for 4 figures, (GBP not USD). Favourite album is Led 3 and favourite track, Since I've been loving you. I really like the work that Robert Plant has done over the last few years as well, particularly the album with Alison Krauss.

I would have never expected James Taylor's hands to be so rough looking. He's got hands like he has been in the fields with the rest of us. How does he play so perfectly with those shaky hands? Must be the chemicals.

Take a look at Keith Richards hands, he looks like he's got on the wrong side of a Vegas gangstar with a club hammer!

The difference in the USA, MIM and Squires are the "STANDARDS" to which they are built. Not the actual build quality of an individual guitar. With the custom USA's having the highest standards, and the Squires having the lowest. This is so Fender can offer a "strat" at multiple price points. With that said, it is possible for a Squire to be built as good as a MIM or a USA for that matter, its just not the norm. There are a lot of variables that come in to play. Wood for instance. Squire sources the cheapest basswood for the body. Thats right Squires are not made of alder. Fender Mexico uses alder for thier bodies but the grading is not as high as US. Fender Corona sets aside the best alder for thier custom guitars and uses the rest for thier American standard series. Although Mexico's "STANDARDS" are not as high as USA's they continually produce the best finishes. If you've ever held a Squire in one hand and a MIM or USA in the other you would know that they are two completely different guitars. By about three pounds. Taking all this into consideration, "Sound is Subjective". What sounds good to you may not sound good to others. This is why whenever someone asks on the forum "whats the best guitar?" everyone replies, "try as many as you can in your price range an let your ears decide". I've played a few Squires. The set-up is always unacceptable, but that can be adjusted. The neck always seems a little too fat for a strat. The tuners are always crap, they can be changed. The electrics are spotty, they can be changed also. BUT, they never sustain. You might as well be playing a Kramer. Good enough to learn on, but once you start thinking about tone, time to switch. MIM is probably the best value. Especially if you are a modder, or like to play out in smokey bars, spill your drink on your guitar, play places where your guitar might get stolen, or just generally don't take care of your equipment the best. There's really not much difference in tone. Thats not to say that you couldn't have a good looking, playing , sounding guitar from Mexico. USA is probably best for someone who wants a nice guitar that will hold or rise in value. Probably won't do any modifications to it. A collector. And the Squires.....Well I have a Squire that I got fo 50 bucks. I keep it under a welding table in the machine shop where sparks land on it and coolant from the machines sometimes gets on it. I don't care what it looks like. I play it at lunch through a Crate amp I found in the trash. The machines are running and I can't hear it so good anyway, so I don't care what it sounds like either.  I also have an American standard that sounds like butta. LIKE BUTTA I said!

Good post Craig, thanks for that insight.

No, they're not. That's a myth perpetuated by dealers to get you to part with your money. Try a few and you'll be surprised, some are awful and the finish on many is poor.

I have a MIM classic 60's Strat that I paid £360 for, my mate has a US Strat that he paid £900 for. Both guitars have been professionally set up by my luthier. Can I tell the difference? Yes. Is it £540 worth of difference? Definately No. There is a lot of snobbery surrounding US and Mexican Strats that in my opinion has no justification whatsoever in fact.
I've played very good Mexican Strats and US Strats and crap Mexican and US Strats. In fact when I bought mine I tried it up against a number of US Strats and preferred my Mexican guitar.
Save your money, buy the Mexican guitar, fit a set of bare knuckle pups and you'll still be quids in.

Watch this, pick your jaw up off the floor then go practice! Some of the runs this guy does are so fast and clean it's scary.

How are you holding your left hand? Your thumb should be in the middle of the neck, try not to wrap your palm around the neck.

I think I've explained that dreadfully hmm Aside from that the only thing is to practice, exercise the muscles in your hands and eventually you'll get there.

We went over to our sons future in laws who had a little family party. Good night all round although I'm a little the worse for wear this morning, (Mrs Buzzwagon did the driving). A Happy and Peaceful New Year to all chordians.

Buzzwagon: RC-2? What amp'd ya get?

Dm

Hi Dm

Yeah, I got the RC2, awesome bit of kit and Mrs Buzzwagon cured my GAS by buying me a Blackstar HT5 practice amp for christmas. Lovely tone and the ISF feature is brilliant. I'm usually a Peavey user but this little thing is superb, well worth checking out their stuff if you're in the market for a new tube amp.

That said, as we all know GAS can't be cured permanantly and anything is purely a temporary arrestor!

Are you running it on the battery rather than an electric supply? If so have you checked that there's no packing on the battery terminals?

Jerry

Take them down to your local school and see if they can use them. There are always some kids that have less than others and the last thing on their parents minds is to buy them new guitar strings when it's all they can do to pay the bills! Failing that if the school provides guitars for students they'll be more than grateful of some free strings.
