First and foremost, you can't teach rhythm, it comes to you. Some people like to get a metronome, but I would advise against it.

When you play a song, play it how you feel like playing it. You don't have to stick to strumming patterns just because XXXXX does.

If your in trouble, the best piece of advise i can give you, is SLOW IT DOWN. Strum down, whilst saying ONE out loud. Then when you come up say AND out loud. At your own pace. Don't rush things, practice.

As Livebaitman said, First things first, don't rush yourself. Learn your chords, practice them, build up your rhythms in your head, then when it all "clicks" it will be a lot easier.

A very simple pattern to learn is ticket to ride.

1 &  2    &    3   &  4  &
------0------------------0
----------2--------0------
-2------------2-----------
---------------------------
--------------------------

Rinse repeat, if you pick it close to the rhythm it should sound spot on.

Hey!

E -
B 2
G -
D -
A -
E -

Means pick the "B" whilst held on the Second fret. Whether you hold an "A Chord" (I say A because that string would be held down), or whether you simply press down the string with your second finger is entirely up to you, as you are only picking the one string. So on and so forth for tab...

--X (Most likely to simply be left blank as an ---)
--X (Most likely to simply be left blank as an ---)

Is a Simple D Chord, where you strum the appropriate chords. When there is a 0 it usually means its played open. So if you see

2

It would be holding down D, whilst strumming all Six strings (hence open).

Your latest qustion,

-----2-------
-2---3---2--
-----2-----3
-----0-------
-------------

Would indeed be, Pick the "2", then strum a "D", then Pick the "2" then Pick the "3".

Hope that helps.

Brilliant, Will give it a go tonight, I think i might replace the D5 with a D7, I've really got a thing for switching to D7 lately over other forms of D.

I know this is primarily (and only) piano song, but I'm really interested to play this as a slow, acoustic guitar song....

Does anyone know possible tabs or a way of playing it? I'm totally hopeless at relating sounds etc, and I'm also not amazing at playing, so something fairly simple would be much appreciated!

Many Thanks!

Dr.

I'm sorry but you can't look past Hendrix. Though to be honest, I though his rendition of All Along the Watchtower, and Little Wing were the stand out songs, never really felt Vodoo or Purple Haze or Hey Joe to be honest.

I will have a go tonight when i get in from work, and have a play around and see what fits with fingers, might even try flatpicking.

I quite like the simpler 1 2 3+4+    for some reason, It seems to work really well for a lot of oasis songs.
                                 D D DUDU

Or you could always go for  1+2+ 3+4+
                                         DDD UDUDU

Does anyone know the strum pattern for this song by Cat Stevens? (which im trying to learn after watching extras if you know what that is)

I've got the chords and all okey, but i'm having extra difficulty picking up the pattern for it to sound right!

Thanks

Blackbird by the Beatles can be fingerpicked very effectively.

Two guitars im looking at now. The actual nevada shop is only around the corner from me, so i would pop in to try buy,  but do you think the extra £350 is worth it?

Thanks!

It can't hurt to just pick up a beginners book from your local library / book store, if nothing else than to learn a few chords and techniques.

I live in pompey, but I'm not good enough to play in a band (other than messing about with my friends)

Hello!

I'm mainly an acoustic player, but I like to dabble into electric. The only electric guitar i have is a very poor squier.

I've seen a nice Fender Strat for £400 (ish) and before i splash the money on it, I just wondered if the difference would be noticeable.

Thanks!

E----

what do those number mean?

can you make any chord on any fret?  such as a c on the third fret and fifth fret?

The numbers are the strings to pick.

EG.

1----
--3--
----5
----
----
----

Would mean that you pick string 1 (e) with you pressing down the first fret.
Then the 3 on string 2 is the same, but you press on the 3rd fret. Tab is really easy to read when you know how.

As for Chords and frets, no a C is not a C if you move it along. A good way to show this is thus:

Let me entertain you (Robbie Williams) is a simple E-G-A-E (4/4 1+2+3+4+)
You can play it simple

E    G    A   E
0    3    0    0
0    0    2    0
1    0    2    1
2    0    2    2
2    2    0    2
0    3    0    0

OR you can make an Emaj, The if you slide it down one fret, it becomes a F, slide it down another its an F#. slide it down one more fret and you get a G. So you can strum Ex4, then slide it down 3 Frets, and strum four times on the G. Next is an A, so one more fret down and you have a G#, then one more fret and you have an A.

So you can play the whole song, by just sliding your fingers down the fret board changing the frets. It works on the musical alphabet.

   b           d        e       g       a
A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#

I suggest you look very heavily into music theory, as one you can understand the alphabet it makes things very easy smile

I hope that helps, it might look mighty confusing....

I found that learning to finger pick sounds a lot better on an acoustic than with a pick (personal preference of course).

Using the Pima system, its good to cover the basics, then when your comfortable with rhythms and which strings to pick, then try and move onto a pick.

But with everything in life, its horses for courses.

You can play Hotel Yorba by White stripes in that very pattern..

G+2+3+4+
C+2+3+4+
D+2+3+4+
G+2+3+4+

Rinse repeat.... Lyrics are easily found, and its one line to each Chord.

Hello all.

I've been playing the guitar for about 5/6 months now (On a Fender Tiki Acoustic, and a Squier Affinity Strat), and I've come to the point where I would like to understand more about the instruments themselves.

The way I personally like to understand how things work, is to build them from scratch. When I took up mountain biking, I started off with a cheap bike, and ended up building my own one, as to understand how the components all work etc. Same with my computer.

Anyway enough waffle. Basically as a total idiot of guitar components (I can tune but haven't dared to adjust anything else on the strat) I need somewhere to start.

I love the shape of the strat, and I've seen a really nice yellow blank strat canvas. I've got about £500 or so I'm prepared to throw at this. (I know i could get a decent guitar for that, but like i've mentioned, its the building experience, and the knowledge im after, so i know i can change things easily and competently in the future, and understand there role in my music).

I'm guess i need the following components :

Base
Neck (with head and nut and keys already attached?)
Pickups
Strings
Bridge
Socket for cable.

What else do i need to pick up? and are there any decent components I can get, that I could successfully build my guitar for my budget?

Thanks for reading.
Ben.
