Sinjin ,
  I don't do much alt tuning ,
except that I have three or four songs that I drop everything on my guitar down one full tone .
As to your question , I can't see how there would be a faster way . Sometimes I'll just tune one guitar down for those songs and leave one standard so I don't have to mess around . This works great if you have more than one guitar .
I have also just used the drop tuned guitar and then capoed to play with the other guys . But that would'nt work if you're tuned to open C ...............

Gee guys ,
Everybody else stole my thunder here , but ditto , ditto , ditto .......
When I used to give lessons, I always used what is now referred to as
" Suzzuki Method " ( you know , listen , then play what you've heard ) . I always found that after learning three major chords , most students could then play a wide variety of songs , and this was all it took to get them hooked . After that , the sky is the limit .
Work hard at practice , but don't make it a chore.....it's supposed to be fun !!!!!!

Thanks James,
Had a good laugh out of that one .
I've had a mustache since I was about 14 . After all these years nobody would know me without it . But last summer , it was really hot and I decided to shave it off .
Even my wife looked at me like , something's different , what is it ?
Anyway this fall I decided to grow it back , and wifey said " honey , why don't you do a little goatee too ". So I did what I usually do and just let everything grow for about 6 days , then got out the trimmer .
This is where everything went so wrong . First thing I
did was take a swipe right across my chin . So oh well ,
I guess I'll just have the mustache again . But then by the time I was done trimming that ( you know , even on both sides ) , I realized I looked like Hitler ,
so the whole thing had to go again .........oh well , I did try...............

When I first saw this topic,
I thought ," are you !!**&&??
kidding me , that was 45 years ago . But then I thought for about 30 seconds
and remembered . The first thing I learned was how to pick " Walk the Line " , but the first song I learned start to finish , was a song called
" You Can't Grow Peaches On
a Cherry Tree " because my two older sisters ( who were superb singers at the time ),
wanted to sing it .
Funny , maybe our first song is like so many other things , you never forget your first...........

Hi Doc ,
I used to tune by ear untill
by little bro turned me on to
the little fender pedal tuner
about twelve years ago . I love this thing . I just use a tee connector into it and I plug everything I'm using in to it before the chorus . It's
full chromatic so I can tune anything with it , and it will pick up the tone even if you're a mile off . Also it does'nt eat batteries just having something plugged into it . When you hit it , it lights up and is easy to see on the floor .

I used to have this problem , mine always seemed to want to rotate 90
degrees . Bummer when you're playing along and come up to that spot where you're supposed to deliver that little lead line and suddenly you have no tip to work with .
I also use the dunlops , but I've been using the
" snot " for years . The other guys give my crap , but you don't see me  fumbling
around to grab another pick either .

Hi guys ,
My idea of versatility , is setting up my es-330 copy , my guild f-30 (w / fishman )
and my electric fiddle ( run through a stand alone preamp along with the guild )
then run through a chorus pedal . Then I plug everything in to what ever is available , whether it be a mixer or amp . I figure if I can't cover it with that , I might as well pack up my toys and go home ........

Hey Nela ,
   I'm gonna tell ( what's your phone number ? )
When I started playing, girls were not a distraction yet . I learned most of what I know before that and after the worst of it . Roy Clark claims to have learned most of what he knows before women became a distraction .
I play for the reason most people do , the love of making music.................

Another thought on this , ( must have been one of those senior moments ) .
Jwildhair mentioned useing a sheet with the first line of each verse on it . Some of the guys I play with use just a small note sheet with the first word of each verse , that also works if they learned the song to begin with .
On this topic , it's well to remember what Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes was fond of saying , " for each new thing we bring into our little brain attic , something else
has to go ". Maybe that's true..............

I love this topic ,
I have been playing for about 45 years , and I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 songs at my fingertips ( mentally speaking ) . Sometimes at jams , I'll pop up with one that no one has heard for years and get through it without a hitch . Everybody is like , how the heck do you remember all these songs .
For me it has always come easy , don't know why .
That's not to say I don't have my share of "senior moments".
When learning new ones though , upyerkilt and I have the same formula . Practice and practice ......I often will take one I'm working on and throw it in the truck when I get ready to leave for my jobs . I'll sing it all day as I'm working . If I get stuck on lyrics , i'll stop untill I can look at the sheet again , it seems like if you do it wrong more than once or twice , it will try to repeat every time you sing it so make sure you have the correct lyrics with you .
With my own songs , since I always write the lyrics first,
then the melody , sometimes
the chords will escape me the first few times .
But PRACTICE , PRACTICE ...

Badeye ,

Just saw your reply about the fiddle , sounds like an instrument to be passed down . I have two neices who
play and I would guess that's
what will happen with a couple of mine . Nothing like knowing that  family members will have them to love , respect , and most important , play.......
I love hearing stories about instruments that are passed down .........

Hi cor h ,
I did , ( kinda ) it was in my grouping of minors . LRL

Agreed , James
Impossible for any stringed instrument to yield mathematically perfect tones
across the spectrum .
I hope these posts help a few people understand what that pesky 440 thing is all about .

Thanks Doc ,
I have also used electrics on accoustic and it worked fine ( I suppose because the bridge saddle still picks up the hertian waves ) .
Just being me , I'm still going to have to try this , and will post if I learn something interesting ..........

HI guys , ( and gals )
I agree with badeye , in that there's just something about that B7 .
If I leave out the minors ,
( which are my true love ) , then I have to go with Cmaj ,
which to me has always constituted perfect harmony .
That and what you can do with walkups to it and walkdowns from it ( quite amazing )..............

Sometimes I wonder why some tuners are still switchable for this . For the most part , all it does is confuse players who are just starting out . Although a lot of seasoned vets don't know what it's all about .
Don't know how many times I've heard a player say,
" yep I've got her tuned right to E-440 "
   A string tuned to 440htz
( vibrations per second ) ,
sounds an A note . That has more or less become the standard for tuning , and everthing else is based on that . Sometimes I think that some people ( particularly those who self study ) , learn just enough to make them dangerous . Although , that said , perhaps since this is for the most part theoretical ,
maybe it does'nt really matter.
   Interesting to note though ,
that untill recently , ( last thirty years or so ) , many concert pianos in orchestral settings were still tuned to A-437 . Didn't seem to bother any but the best ears . Although I have read accounts of the poor violin soloist walking away shaking his or her head after a performance , thinking something was'nt right .......

Hi kahuna ,
   Thanks for the reply .
The bronze thing was my first thought also , but they still use steel core .  Are you thinking that because bronze isn't magnetic ? If so then why do these stainless steel strings work , since stainless isn't magnetic either .
Also I have a Dean Markley
pro magntic pickup that slips into the sound hole on any accoustic , and that works fine with bronze .
I may just have to try this and see what kind of tone I get . It'l still be fun.......

Hi guys ,
Had to put my two cents in on this one .
Shredfiend is right about not messing with the truss rod unless there is a need to do so , but , a guitar neck should not be straight . It should actually be bowed slightly to provide relief , usually measured at the 5th , 7th , 9th ( and so on )
frets . There are specs for this, but would have to get out my reference manual .
Also the truss rod should never be used to adjust action . That is done at the bridge . Most electrics are easily adjustable and on accoustics you do this by raising or lowering the bridge saddle . to raise it you can either replace the saddle or shim it , to lower them I clamp them in the milling machine and I can remove as little or as much as needed
If you use any other method for this , you must be sure that the bottom is perfectly flat when you are done or the tone will suffer .
Again , just my two cents ,
" for what it's worth " ( hey
isn't that a song )

Any of you guys ever use accoustic bronze strings on an electric with humbuckers ?
If so i'm interested to know how it affected tone .
I know this is very subjective,
but would like to hear any and all comments ...thanks...

Hi guys ,
This also sounds like it could be an intonation issue .
You didn't say if it was electric
or accoustic . Most electrics have individually adjustable
bridge saddles . You can check this by tuning that string to open E ( as mentioned , make sure your tuner is set at 440 htz ) ,then
fret the string at the 12th fret
and it should be right on E ,
just an octive higher . You can also check that harmonic but usually you won't need to . If it is sharp , you will need to lengthen the string by adjusting the saddle back toward the tail piece , or if flat , go the other way .
hope this helps ........

Thanks guys ,
I will try to do that . I don't know anything about this cutting and pasteing thing . I 'm lucky if I can turn this thing on and off .

Wow , twenty years ago ?
Are you and old timer too ?That must have been a traumatic experience for you,
( and a Martin too .) I bet you still have nightmares about that one .
My first was a Stella flat top that was old when I got it ( forty five years ago when I was ten yrs old , I guess that dates me  ) .Knowing what I know now it was an awfull guitar , but I did'nt know the difference at the time . To me it was the holy grail . I learned a lot of what I know on that guitar . That was untill my two older sisters
were playing piggy back in the living room and fell on it when I had it sitting in a chair
smashed the top in .
( I think they were just mad because I had more sisters than they did....... )

If anyone is interested in seeing some of my song lyrics , I posted a couple of them on a site called (storymania.com) a few years ago just to get some feedback . If anyone wants to see the chords for any of them , I will put them up here. Couple of them are favorites at jams , and of course those are the ones that have pretty violin parts . Have'nt figured out how to play guitar and fiddle at the same time .......( maybe if I use a harmonica holder ??? )
Oh well ,  maybe some day......
Anyway if you go there and put in my name under author info. ( Jerry Short ) ,
my stuff should come up .
    Would like any feedback ,
good or bad , from other
musicians .

Thanks o6 ,
I have'nt had a chance to talk to little bro. and ask him yet . I have heard of Guns though , in fact I think one of the younger guys I jam with does some of their stuff . Not bad either .......
I just know who most of the old timers are ......L R L
That's one interesting thing about our jams , your likely to hear anything from Merle Haggard to Greenday . Maybe just not done quite as well ...........
