talking of Beatle guitars, i think John Lennon's black Rickenbacker does it for me.

Rickenbacker bass as played by Chris Squier of Yes.

John Lennon (again) his blond Gibson. almost bought one, didn't like the arm, too flat!

Status Quo and their Telecasters (partly the reason why I've got one)

Brian May's home made guitar, which is now available over the counter! not his actual one but copies...DUH

Mark Knopfler's guitar (don't know the maker but I think it's a luthier from New York?

Paul's Hofner bass, I almost bought one from the Beatles museum on Liverpool dock, lefty too!

Steve Howe and his pedal steel.

i always had trouble with curly leads, especially on stage work.

as you dont stay in one place the connectors in the jacks tend to get pulled and twisted as you move around, eventually coming loose, crackling etc.

if your just sitting in your front room jamming away you should have no problems. if it's stage work, make sure you carry a spare.

i love fenders myself and have a strat and tele (mexicans) though i find the quality excellent, i do find they make a bit of noise whereas korean or japanese guitars are quieter. i've never recieved a lead (curly or otherwise) with a new guitar. maybe they take them out in the UK!

i used to make electric wire, and i can tell you the best wire to get (if your making your own) is computer cable. (it needs to be shielded though) the noise you get comes from the fact that the copper is rough. smoother copper creates less resistance so less noise and the sound will flow easier.

hope this helps

thanks guys, is a song or tune ever over? i had 2 or 3 video studios i got for my old XP machine, which didn't work...so i down loaded a couple, not a good idea as i wanted a freebee and they are all try-outs! then i found that there is a fairly good studio in windows...so i'm experimenting and hopefully get some nice vids from it. i find that the sound you get on YOU-TUBE is far superior to my space, so.....

Tony, LISTENINGABLE? it will probably get into the Oxford English dictionary next year, just make sure they credit you for it

i was just watching the who on tv, an old video where they performed "tommy" and "quadrophenia". john entwistle played a bass guitar solo that rocked my socks off! such a shame he's no longer with us.

i knew he was a super bassist, i played bass in several bands but always preferred simple licks, he just has "crazy flipper fingers" i wonder if he left them to science?

thanks for all your replies and well wishes. FYI, Lalnfair PG (easier that way) is in North Wales, and is a beautiful place. I prefer the south which is why I live there, apart from the fact that it's warmer and as most English and Scots have inferred, the southerners are nicer people, no offense to the Gogs!

Whitewater, sorry to correct but it's Men of Harlech.

FYFI, St. Davids or Dewi Sant in Wesh, has a cathedral in west Wales between Pembroke and Fishguard (both ports where you can take the ferry to Ireland) it's probably the smallest city in the world, and St. Davids tomb is located there along with some very fine scenery.

I would like to wish all Chordie members a happy St. Davids day, today being March 1st. St David being patron saint of Wales.

hi lady tut and welcome to chordie.

the first solution that comes to mind is to buy a guitar that has a wide neck like a classical guitar.

i believe that tony iomi of black sabath used thimbles (or similar) as he cut off the tops of his fingers!

thanks roger, until i read your post earlier as far as i was concerned the tune was finished. but now it's developed a middle 8 and some arrangement. i've re-recorded it but i have no intention of putting words to it.

and thanks to you too russ. inspiration came from a conversation with some guitarist from over the pond. all i have to do now is re-film it?

i dont have G.A.S., i bought the guitars i wanted then felt satisfied, i just want a 24 track recorder now and that's giving me terrible G.A.S., or should that be R.A.S.H? ( recorder acquisition syndrome hives)

it's funny how some strings do that and others dont, well not so much. i'm sorry but it's the nature of the beast that they will squeak! you could try lubricating them (not a joke) use a light oil or the polish you'd use on wood....strange but true. you could also (and i do this before a gig) rub hand lotion into your hands/fingers, and it will help the squeak and your skin.
oh i forgot to say, to apply oil or wax polish, put it on a rag not directly onto the guitar and just rub onto the finger board strings.
